I would beg to differ on this-1. HD-DVD looks alot better than SD-DVD. I have over 1,000 SD-DVD Movies & took the HD-DVD Plunge. Guess what I'm not getting rid-of my SD-DVD Movies. Actually my SD-DVD Movies look exception via UPCONVERSION than a regular DVD Player on my HD-DVD Player.

What I will do is buy the HD-DVD New Releases like I did today with "Mission Impossible III". Unfortunately my SD-DVD buying will be minimal.

I see the opposite. ESPN and FOX and the 720p channels look better than the 1080i ones. Especially CBS. It looks the worst on my TV.

The price difference isn't worth it to me. I've seen HD-DVD and Blu Ray playing at Circuit City, and it didn't blow me away from what standard DVD looks like on my TV. I bought Mission Impossible for 13.99 today, I saw the HD-DVD is like 27.99... that's double, no thanks.

EDIT - It must have been the 2 disc collector's edition I was looking at, looking at cc.com, the HD-DVD of MI3 is $39.99.. holy ****!

If you have a 720p tv, then the 720 stuff should look better in it's native format, same for a 1080i TV. I have a 1080i tv and CBS looks better than Fox.

I didn't realize that SD-DVDs were "backwards compatible" (I have never really looked into this, since I knew I wasn't buying). That will make me more likely to upgrade once a format takes hold....I'm still not going to choose to upgrade in the near future, although I would never begrudge anyone their electronic toys...

Agreed...although I don't have a real issue with the fox picture either.

FOX looks pretty good, as does NBC, but ABC is bad IMO.

Oh, I don't either, Fox looks great as does ESPN. CBS just looks better to me. Discovery and INHD look the best IMO.

There are so many extraneous factors. Native resolution of your TV and the broadcast resolution of the station.

ESPN and Fox broadcast in. NBC, CBS and TNT broadcast in 1080i. I'm looking for a chart I used to have which showed all the stations and what they broadcast in. Just can't find it, but I know the one's I listed are accurate.

I'm the opposite of you. My TV is 720p native and stations that broadcast in 720p are much better.

EG, I would take the picture quality @ CC & Best Buy with a grain of salt... The settings on those sets are not done correctly. They jack-up the Brightness & Contrast to compensate for the lighting in the stores.

You will see a difference from SD-DVD to HD-DVD. I'm sorry but a 480p signal cannot compare to a 720p, 1080i or 1080p signal. No matter what the source is.

I compared Chronicles of Riddick in both 480P(SD-DVD) running off a HITACHI DVD PLAYER & 1080I (HD-DVD) running of a Toshiba HD-A1 & the HD-DVD kicked the SD-DVD in da-@$$ on my set.

The pricing may be what's making people cautious, but I doubt Picture Quality is the reason people are holding off

                            Yeah it's official.

If you check out ebay and sites like that, you can get most HD-DVD's on buy it now auctions for like 13-17 bucks. Not bad IMO. I'll plan on picking a few of my favorites on HD, but just use the upconvert functionality for all the rest of my regular dvds.
