Re: PS3 Impressions, part three
After owning a PS3 for just about 72 hours now, I thought I'd provide some initial thoughts.
Setup:
It was really quite easy, including updating the firmware. Very smooth for the most part.
The Console:
A gorgeous piece of equipment that will look good with any home theater. It's definitely not the PS2 when it comes to size and weight. This is a pretty hefty piece of equipment and is bigger than the 360.
The Sixaxis Controller:
No it doesn't rumble, but man what a comfortable, solidly built controller. It's extremely light weight, yet it feels unbreakable. The free-throw shooting in in NBA 2K7 is pretty cool. You don't use buttons or sticks. You actually use the whole controller. You bring it back towards you to start the player movement of bringing the ball up into shooting position. Then, you move the controller forward to release the shot.
Launch Titles:
Not impressive. I got Resistance: Fall of Man, which is excellent. After that, there just isn't much. NBA 2K7 is awesome, but not much different at all than the 360 version. The court is a little shinier and the free throw shooting is different and that's about it.
Performance:
The two games I own look great. Do they look better than what I've seen on my 360? So far, no. I do think the potential is there with the power of this console. Game developers will be getting more out of it as time goes on. Just as they have with the 360.
Load time seem to take a little longer than the 360, but it's hardly noticeable.
The start menu is much like that of the PSP if you seen it. Not nearly as pretty and user-friendly as that of the 360. The 360 menu has gone through a few updates during the past year and I'm sure the PS3 menu will improve too.
If you want to download something from the Sony store like a game demo or trailer, you can't do it in the background. Again, this will probably be updated in time.
Blu Ray:
This is the one feature I was looking forward to most of all with the PS3. But I have to say, I'm not impressed at all. I have this console hooked up via HDMI to a 1080p HD set. With the 360 I have the HD-DVD component hooked up via component cables. Which do you think looks better? It's the HD-DVD!!! The Blu Ray discs look better than standard DVD, but they don't look as good as the HD-DVD's I have. I really thought the Blu Ray DVDs would look better than HD-DVD. Especially running at a true 1080p through an HDMI connection.
Overall:
If at this time I were told I could only keep one system it would be the 360. The are a lot more games available and the graphics and gameplay seem even. I prefer the HD-DVD over Blu-Ray. I never thought that would be the case, but it is. The online capabilities of the 360 are much better as well.
Will I get enjoyment out of the PS3...no doubt. I'm having a ball with Resistance and I downloaded a demo for a game called Motor Storm that is brilliant. The gameplay is addictive and the graphics are better than that of any of the launch titles.
Will the PS3 improve? Again, no doubt. After developers get more time with the system and the Sony online network goes through a maturation period, the PS3 will become one nice console.Comment

Re: PS3 Impressions, part three
I think the PS3 will be a great system, but I'm just not happy with it right now. And then this morning I read this bullsh*t.

Re: PS3 Impressions, part three
Thanks and you're welcome. I'm not into being a fan boy of one system. I love 'em all. I wish I could afford the Wii as well.
I'll try to provide more impressions after spending more time with the PS3.Comment

Re: PS3 Impressions, part three
This one still really shocks me. I was so jacked up about Blu Ray and seeing it perform. I still find it shocking that Blu Ray doesn't look as good as HD-DVD.Comment

Re: PS3 Impressions, part three
I ran it for about four hours in a row yesterday and it never shut down on me. I've never had problems with my 360 that I bought at launch either. Now if you put the PS3 or 360 in a plexi-glass box, I think overheating could become a problem. Same thing goes if you stack one of them in a tight-fitting entertaiment center. Those beasts need some breathing room and air to breathe.Comment

Re: PS3 Impressions, part three
Sure enough I looked down and it had blow holes on both sides of the lower portion of the kiosk and you can hear and feel fans moving air where the PS3 was located. I asked if he had any issues regarding heat or lockups and he said no.Comment

Re: PS3 Impressions, part three
That comment by the EB employee surprises me. The EB I went to had a working PS3 kiosk and I was commenting on the PS3 in the display case. He told me that's not the real PS3 it's down below in the kiosk station.
