Wow. I have been looking forward to this one, but these are some serious delays! It was supposed to be out already.

Oh well, I hope that means it will be extremely polished.

Looks like LBP is at CES.

                Little Big Planet Update

Since then we've watched the game evolve slowly, and with ne're a firm release date in the pipelines – and at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2008 in Las Vegas last night, Sony showed off some new features in the game and a brief look at how users will create their own levels from scratch.

New additions include new emotions for the game's main characters, little stuffed sackcloth creatures called Sackboys. Click up on the controller's D-pad to make the creature go from straight-faced to smiling, to grinning to deliriously happy, tongue hanging out for emphasis. Click down on the D-pad to turn him into a scowling sourpuss. Sackboy's newfound emotions will also affect his other gestures. He'll shoot the peace sign, Nixon-style, if he's in a good mood and bare his fists if he's in a bad mood.

This small attention to detail makes this game both visually appealing and just plain charming. Game producer Kyle Shubel says he's never seen a team "so obsessed" with bringing a world to life using intricate textures and "things that remind them of their childhood."

Sackboys can now move from front to back in the environment, and no longer just from side to side. Easter eggs with new items can be placed around the game – pick them up to add a leaf shape or new texture, etc. to build your sackboys' inventory and ultimately enjoy more flexibility when creating or adding something to different levels.

Little Big Planet's currency – formerly called Sponge – is now called Fluff, which in the level we played last night looked like tiny pastel colored Marshmallows.

Well since this game has a unprecendented amount of user customization for a console game I guess we can wait a bit longer, right?

                    CES presentation video

Even with so much to see and try out, I knew exactly where I wanted to go straightaway - the LittleBigPlanet demo in the hugetastic Sony pavilion. In the video below, Kyle Shubel walks us through some new “Create” functions of the game. You may wanna pay special attention to an off-hand remark he makes towards the end of the video.

Watching Kyle build a tree from a few simple building blocks was really inspiring, and I know that once you gamers get your hands on the full game, we’re going to see things even the designers never envisioned. Oh, and this made-for-internet video really doesn’t come close to doing the game’s visuals true justice, keep that in mind.

LittleBigPlanet Confirmed for Fall, Game Not Yet Alpha

During a real-time demonstration of Media Molecule's highly-anticipated user-driven cooperative platformer LittleBigPlanet (PS3) today at a Sony event at CES in Las Vegas, it was revealed that the game is currently planned for a fall 2008 release. Previously, the game was expected early this year.

The news comes as official confirmation of previous rumors on which Sony refused to comment.

At one point, the game froze mid-demonstration, prompting a representative to note that LittleBigPlanet has not yet reached alpha state. Alpha generally designates a game that is largely feature-complete but still not stable.

Sony unveiled a new level theme for the game, set in India and containing various Indian and Hindu imagery including elephants and many-limbed deities. It was also announced that players will now be able to die in the game, perhaps in response to concerns that LittleBigPlanet's open nature and player-driven levels would otherwise have a lack of tension. Shacknews will have more detailed impressions of the latest showing of LittleBigPlanet later today.
Update: Media Molecule has discussed the possibility of a downloadable beta in the late spring, SCEA tells Shacknews, though nothing is set in stone at this time. The company also clarified that the fall release of the Blu-ray version will be global.
New trailer showing a level being created.

                                Gamespot Hands-on

LittleBigPlanet has its fair share of bugs at this stage, but it's clear that the developer has all the basic elements in place. The game is officially in a pre-alpha stage, although a highly limited beta test has also begun to test the online code. Nonetheless, the version that we played was apparently completely new and stable enough for us to play in four-player mode. Working alongside three other games journalists was an absolute joy, and we witnessed much of the game's early potential transforming into a sublime multiplayer experience right before our eyes. LittleBigPlanet is a game that's impossible for you to play without grinning like a child, and we had an immense amount of fun customising our character and playing cooperatively in the world.
LittleBigPlanet has a simple set of controls for its platforming elements. Your character can jump only a relatively small way into the air, but he can hold on to certain objects if you press and hold the Sixaxis' R1 button. You can use this to pull or push objects along the ground, or to grab hold of things in midair before using your momentum to swing around. It's unbearably cute to see Sackboy running his legs through the air as he holds on to a swinging object, and this, if nothing else, will encourage everyone to play around with the physics in the world. One section that we played featured a set of seesaws that needed traversing in order to progress, but the shift of balance required all four players to work together in order to progress--and many problems will have multiple solutions.
