Granted, sometimes I clutch the strummer with both my index finger and my thumb and go up and down rapidly during fast songs like le ole 'Misirlou', but otherwise I will only strum up. What about you guys?
I think my weakest area is my strumming. Ever since the first Guitar Hero, I strum by "hitting" the strum bar with the nail of my index finger, with my fingers as if I am holding a guitar pick (index and thumb clutching the invisible pick). This is just the way that feels right to me. And it works for me 95% of the time. However, it does not work in those songs that have you play one note very fast for a while. Misirlou for example. In those instances, I grab the strum bar and move it up and down, but never very well. Those type of songs always give me the hardest time and I end up not enjoyng them much.

I've beaten GH I & II on Expert, so I can manage with my odd picking technique, but I'll never 5 star certain songs unless I change it. I know it's the area I need to work on.

Same here. I cruised through Hard, passing every song and Boss Battle the first time, then I got to this song and the Mosh 1 section and my Rock Meter went from green to fail in about 5 seconds. What a slap in the face! lol. I've tried that section in Practice and can nail it perfect on the two lowest speed settings and can hit about 80% of it in the speed right below regular, but at regular speed it just destroys me!!!

They look human to me. And I haven't seen or heard them do anything that just about any other metal band out there can't do.

You should check out some Marc Rizzo song on YouTube.

TTFTTF isn't the best example of their skill level. They solo faster and cleaner than most metal bands. There are several bands that have as much talent, but they are all regarded as "faster than normal". Many good metal bands can't do what they can do though.

This is how I play all the time. I hold the strum bar like a pick. It feels the best and allows me to really "strum" up and down. Plus it is the most efficient way to play both this game and picking a real guitar.

                      Re: Guitar Hero 3

My thoughts on the game after 3 nights of play......

GH2 was my first GH. I started that game on easy and moved my way up to expert. I never actually finished the career on expert getting hung up on psychobilly freakout, but I got decent at expert.

Now after getting through most of gh3 on hard and expert, I'm not sure how I feel about it. It's like the song selections were made with little regard to how they would actually play on a toy guitar. Too many songs with long lists of repeating notes. It's just not fun to me to hold two or three buttons and strum the crap out of the guitar for long periods of time.

The difficulty of the songs on expert isn't over the top for me until I hit the Japanese tier, but I thought too many of the songs before that weren't all that fun to play.

I don't equate extreme difficulty with fun on this type of game. Some of those songs I got through and said wooo, I'm glad I'll never have to do that again. Whereas on most GH2 songs, I always wanted to come back for more to improve my score because the songs were fun to play. Maybe once I get dexterous enough to hit the alternating 3 button chords without having to think about them, I'll enjoy some of those songs more.

I like the game overall and many of the songs, but if this was my first GH experience I don't know if I'd rush out to buy a sequel like I did with this one after GH2. Next time I'll pay more attention to early youtube vids of the note charts to gauge the difficulty and fun factor.

I rate the Slayer and Metallica songs on expert as impossible.

The Metallica one isn't bad. I got 90% on my first try.

Dragonforce's guitar skills are vastly overrated. They speed up their recordings and are sloppy and slower in live performances.

After a few Youtube vids, I have to agree. Wow. I still stand by the fact that most metal bands can't do what is on the dragonforce recording, but those live shows were sloppy. Polar opposite of Dream Theatre, where it's good enough to record a studio level recording from their live performances.

Once I started strumming up AND down though the tough part in One I got through it wih no problem.

Still not even close to getting through Slayer.
