Re: Rage (iD Software's new FPS using their Tech-5 Engine)

iD Tech 5 engine sounds impressive from what I've read. The scenes with the buggies reminded me of MotoStorm. The game sounds cool from the little bit of info that has been released.

"Everybody should know that we're going to be good at interiors, but we wanted to make a game that offered more. Maybe we should do something that's a little brighter. Maybe stretch out a little bit. What we wound up with is this post-apocalyptic Road Warrior-type game. It's still about 50% run and gun, it's got adventure elements, a lot of driving elements as well."

"You're kind of like Buck Rogers in a sense that you come to this world that has long-since forgotten about you. The lines between good and evil are a little grey. There are settlers in this wasteland and an evil regime -- a very classic story. I think the key thing here is that everything we're doing has got to be fun. No extras to show off some tech. It has to serve a purpose and make the game fun. With the big wastelands you can get out of your car, you can drive everywhere, go into little caves, talk to people, we have a better inventory system--it has some adventure elements, too -- but this isn't an RPG."
More on the engine and game

Also, Carmack had some interesting things to say during his keynote and you can read them here. It's still going on.

id has made a decision to target 60fps with its engine and games.

      Tech 5 Tools Exploration

Impressive and I like what he wants to do with Tech 6. It would be incredible, if he can do for geometry what he's doing for textures with Tech 5 and then combine the two.

              Game Infirmer August Issue

It's hard to believe, but it's been almost two years since id Software announced its hybrid FPS/racer Rage. Since then, the developer has been tight-lipped about the project. That all changes with our August issue. We've got tons of exclusive dirt on the post-apocalyptic title, including plenty of gameplay details and loads of screens.

New details on id Software's open-world shooter-um-racer Rage has surfaced via this month's issue of Game Informer, painting a picture unlike any previous id game.

A whole host of details are revealed in the article, including the following features:
                • An engineering system to craft devices including sentry turrets and RC car bombs, if you have the blueprints and parts.
                • Your health regenerates--a gift connected to your history.
                • Races and missions are available from hub towns.
                • Vehicular combat is a big part of racing, with power-ups and ammo placed around the courses.
                • Weapon upgrades, such as a scope and aiming stabilisers for a crossbow.
                • Alternate ammo types, including a crossbow bolt which allows you to briefly control victims before they explode.
                • Stealth is an option in combat too.
                • A gladiatorial game show named Mutant Bash TV offers big prize money.
                • A car parts system allows boosts to areas such as acceleration, traction and suspension.
                • Other car upgrades include bombs, a magnet to draw power-ups, tire shredders and EMP shields.
                • Multiplayer modes are currently not finalised.
                • One weapon is a three-tipped boomerang called the 'wingstick,' which will return.
                • The PC version will offer higher resolutions, more anti-aliasing and faster texture page-in times, but the three versions are essentially the same.

Re: Rage (iD Software's new FPS using their Tech-5 Engine)

Rage on PS3 currently running considerably slower than PC and Xbox 360 versions.

Game development legend and id Software co-founder John Carmack has never been shy to offer his honest opinion on each console, and he's been at it again when talking about the studio's latest game, Rage.

In an interview with EDGE (via CVG), Carmack has revealed why the PS3 version of the game is currently running slower than the Xbox 360 and PC versions.

"The PS3 lags a little bit behind in terms of getting the performance out of it," said Carmack. "The rasteriser is just a little bit slower - no two ways about that.

"The RSX is slower than what we have in the 360. The CPU is about the same, but the 360 makes it easier to split things off, and that's what a lot of the work has been, splitting it all into jobs on the PS3," he said.

So there you have it. Hopefully id will be able to get all three versions running at the same speed in time for launch.

ps3 gets shafted seems like they didnt really care about the ps3 verison too much or devolping for it. maybe they should go learn from naughty dog and guerilla(killzone 2) to learn how its done? i understand there point tho because rage will probably sell the least on ps3 so they dont want to spend too much time configuring it....

Update: Edge has posted further details from its article saying that Carmack is confident that the PS3 version will match that of all other supported platforms: "Everything is designed as a 60 hertz game. We expect this to be 60 hertz on every supported platform.

GamesRadar+ takes you closer to the games, movies and TV you love.

really really tired of devolpers shafting the ps3 and taking the easy way out of it.

devolpers like valve wont even touch ps3 because its too hard wth is that.

The PlayStation 3 has a lot of power. When we started Uncharted we were really ambitious and had no idea what the PS3 would give us. Once we got the first dev-kits, we realized quickly that we could do everything we had planned to. The three main points for me are the Cell, Blu-Ray and the hard drive. We’ve been using the Cell for pretty much all our systems: rendering, particles, physics simulation, collision detection, animation, AI, decompression, water simulation, etc … and to give you an idea of the power of the PS3, we’re using only 30 percent of the Cell processor.

In terms of Blu-Ray, we just couldn’t have made Uncharted without it; with Uncharted we have almost filled it (91 percent). We’re also using the hard drive to pre-cache data from the Blu-Ray disc. That allows us to stream up to 12 streams for sound, load level data super fast and more importantly to stream textures constantly to guarantee high-res quality on the screen.

Sounds like the PS3 version just lacks some optimization, and it's not like the game is coming out this year. From Carmack's comments seems like the RSX is just simply slower with what they're trying to do, so now their working on offloading some tasks that would normally be handled by the GPU to the Cell SPUs. If he is confident they will hit 60, than I don't think there is anything to worry about, plus last year they hired one of the brightest PS3 programmers in the world in former ICE Team, Jon Olick. iD is also not just selling a game, but an engine too, and having the PS3 perform at half the framerate would be a bit of a black eye, especially sense the potential licensee's would be multiplatform developers.

yeah ur probably right but it just seems only 1st party people know how to use the ps3 powers which kinda sucks.

First party devs have the luxury of targeting a single platform though, and the great thing about Sony is they invest heavily into their internal studios and have several that have always been known to push the PlayStation hardware. While stuff like the Edge tools are shared with outsiders, they absolutely keep some things secret, and are only shared amongst the first party studios. This is something Microsoft doesn't have. First, they don't have much of a first party invest in to begin with, and secondly (outside of Rare) none of the other studios are really known for their technical prowess. So they mostly have to rely on the third party to show what their box can do.

I also think that utilizing the Cell and all the multi processing power to the max requires a separate mindset. This gen the 3rd party is developing for 360 and porting to PS3.

Last gen it was the other way around, and a lot of 3rd party games didn't take full advantage of the Xbox because they were coding to the PS2 first and then porting over.

The Sony First Party devs can develop completely with the Cell and all that architecture in mind, I'm sure it'd be pretty damn tough to port that type of code to a 360 since they're different in design.

and 360's Xenos unified shaders and Edram are powerful tools that Ps3 lacks and work great with this new megatexure tech
