Yup I had $10 credit from UFC and I was given $10 by Amazon after a complaint about some mixup so I looked through the games coming out and this game was the first one I wanted. LBP2 and GT5 come out during fall and that's it for me for the year.

Most would draw obvious parallels between Mafia 2 and the GTA series, but the developers at 2K think their game is "completely different".
"For us the freedom is not the main thing, which we are offering to the player," senior gameplay producer at 2K Czech Janek Kolar told CVG recently.
"We are basically trying to limit their freedom to give them more experience, better experience."
Because of the focus on narrative and a cinematic experience, in terms of a spectrum of games, Kolar feels that Mafia 2 is on a "completely different side" to GTA, and sees competition elsewhere:
"For example Alan Wake is a very narrative title, where story takes a very important role or Uncharted could be an example," he said.
2K's international producer Alex Cox concurs: "In Alan Wake the atmosphere they create there is incredible you don't need to have an open world to make that feeling of being lost in the woods with guys coming at you from behind and around you."
"That experience is more important than the ability to go to five or six different forests around a map and do it at your own pace."
"Basically there are theoretical approaches. One that is important for games is the gameplay, the challenge, and the second one is the narrative," continues Kolar.
"A lot of people are quarrelling about which is more important. With Mafia 2 we are going more towards the storytelling way of doing the game but I think these concepts are not opposite they coming together and it's the future of games I would say."Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

Re: Mafia II (PS3/360)
I'm a huge fan of story in a game. Few games win over the masses these days on gameplay alone. It's the story that drives them. It's the story that endears gamers to the franchise. Considering how long Mafia II has been in development, the story 'should' be amazing.Comment

Re: Mafia II (PS3/360)
The first Mafia I had for PC, still one of the BEST games I have ever played. Think of GTA with a much richer story, more realistic graphics, better theatrics, set in the gangster times. I actually like the first Mafia over any of the GTA games. Not that the GTA series is bad, its great I just liked Mafia even more.__________________________________________________ ____

Also, like where you're head's at on the LBP2 and GT5. Those two along with Mafia II and NCAA will most likely be it for me this year. But I have been itching to go out and pick up BFBC2 again if I can find it on the cheap after trading it in for Red Dead. You still playing BFBC2 much?A negative mind will never give you a positive life.

Re: Mafia II (PS3/360)
ehh, not a big fan of "not having choices" In general, i disagree with everything that article said. If I want to just watch cutscenes after cutscenes with no choice on what to do between missions, etc. Id just watch a ovie or something. the draw to a lot of these games is exploration, side missions, etc. collecting scraps and running on set paths and stuff isnt my cup of tea. GTA, RDR, Saints row, are how I enjoy action/sandbox games. I have no problem with the way they delivered their stories neither. I thought they were great.Comment

Re: Mafia II (PS3/360)
thats exactly my point. there was nothing wrong with the way they tell their story. Going linear wont help tell the story better imo which is what the article is trying to say.Comment

Re: Mafia II (PS3/360)
RDR - the story missions are actually fun and interesting, but the storyline isn't that imperative to the quality of the overall game.

Re: Mafia II (PS3/360)
Personally I never really cared for the GTA mission style, where you have the missions coming in chunks by different people. IMO it limits the amount of story you get in each mission and ultimately leads to a lot of busywork missions without much, if any, plot development. Plot development comes when you mop up all these small missions and get to the big plot element missions. To me this creates a bunch of lulls that really make me struggle to force myself to play through busywork missions to get to the plot. I think Vice City was the only GTA I made it all the way through as I would hit dull missions and I would move on to something more interesting.Comment

For example in RDR, I seemed to have done one of the missions in backwards order, where I got the machine gun for West Dickens before Seth even mentioned anything about it, and they had just gone along with the story as if I had done the mission for Seth already.
That's why I'll have absolutely no problem with the way Mafia II is looking at creating the narrative, since I think it's nice to have those extremes to choose from.
On one hand you have Saints Row where you basically just go out and do anything you want, and then Mafia II works as a straight-forward action game, disguised as a free-roam game.Comment
