Re: Call of Duty 4 - Impressions

Hey guys. I'm new to these types of games when playing them online. Couple of questions for the OS community.

    1. How do the online games work? Sorry for the stupid question, but I really don't know. Is it every man for himself or do you have to have some friends to form a team?

    2. How do I get in a game where I won't be "holding up" the progress of other people because I'm a newbie?

    Thanks.

You can play "Free for all" which is a basic deathmatch (kill whoever you see). There are also team modes where you have various objectives (capture the flag, team deathmatch, try and capture/defend areas on the map, etc). You can just use "Find Match" in the online menu and play against random people either in team or free for all. I wouldn't worry about "holding up the progress of other people", just hop in games and play. You'll probably get killed a lot at first (like I did, but after an hour or so it'll start clicking and you'll kill more. Just have to get used to the game.

Also look for us from OS (most of our gamertags are linked under our screennames with the Xbox circle icon, click that) for some games too...

Yea I think playing against randoms is what helped me the most on CoD3. But like Mgoblue said you wont hold anyones progress up. As long as you know basic controls your should be alright.

Like last night it was a bunch of us from here against some randoms and they killed us. Some guy "Illamabad" I think his name was ran up his kill count. He ended up killing 4 of us within a matter of seconds with a sniper rifle. So I dont think you will hold up anyone, plus hey its all about having fun.

yeah, you won't hold anyones progress up. You will just get killed alot. But the more you play, the better you get.

Bingo. That's why I think the whole "leveling up" thing is so completely overblown. I do it because it's fun to rank up and play with different weapons and perks while having a persistent record of your progress, not because I think I have to in order to compete with higher level people.

I'm level 22, but I'm using equipment (M4 with grenade launcher) and perks (Conditioning and Stopping Power) that I had unlocked by level 10. And I'm still kicking butt and taking names. So for anyone worried about the potential unbalancing effect of the leveling system, rest assured you're still fully able to compete with anyone once you hit even a modest level of advancement like level 10.

While the higher levels of advancement offer you more options, they really don't offer anything so incredibly awesome that you're powerless to compete against someone ranked a few levels higher than you. Like Heel said, chances are that the reason they're beating up on you is because their high level means they've just played the game a whole lot more than you have, they know the maps better than you do, etc.

I think once you hit 10 or 11, you're pretty much even with everyone else.

When you kill someone with a knife do you get more points of something? Because it seems like everyone snuck up behind me and used it.

Or is it because when you dont have you gun drawn you disappear on the radar? I know you dont show up on radar if you use a silencer.

I don't think you show up on radar unless you are firing your gun.

Maybe thats it, I just know last night I kept thinking someone on the other side of the wall was dead because their dot disappeared from radar and then I was dead because they came up and stabbed me.

That is correct, unless of course the other team has a UAV online.

yeah, I have the UAV jammer unlocked so that helps. Just need a silencer so I can really be stealth.

I'm getting this tonight...I haven't played any online shooters since SOCOM. This should be interesting.

I don't remember. You have to pick it as one of your 3 special features or whatever they are called.

Yeah, exactly...This is the first game in a while it's just been fun with randoms. I want to get better, and the leveling up makes me feel good lol. Next I'm going to work on my assault rifle usage and see if I can improve my range (instead of the MP5, it's got good spray but not much range).

I've never felt like "I'm too low ranked, that level 20 is gonna own me"...sure, I've gotten my *** handed to me sometimes, but I just kept playing and having fun. Now I notice that I get 3 and 5 kill streaks more often. I've learned to use the radar more, just keep moving and try and catch people off guard.
