I just want to point out..at no point was I "pissed" or "mad" at Hotshot. I was actually just talking with him. Then he sorta, snapped

Anyway, like I said before, I find it nerdy, but good for them. They have a good common bond obviously, so hopefully they stick.

We are getting old my friend. That's life....

I dont know the last time i had a friend ask the girlfriends parents for their blessing.

It's important to some, not so much to others.

I know. I hate to admit it (old age) but it also has to do with our society. They've just forgone tradition to do whatever the heck they like.

I was having a conversation with a co-worker yesterday about that very thing (asking a g/f's parents).

Although to be honest if I ask and they say no I'm still gonna propose anway lol

Well the whole ask the dad permission thing was done because the daughters were property of their dads and were basically being sold to their fiancees, I can see why people don't want to do that anymore.

Right, but the same can be said about the woman's family paying for the wedding. That's what a dowry was used for.

And we obviously still don't have dowry's. Regardless it seems as if tradition has just gone out the window.

I guess it just shows a level of respect to her parents...I understand why some might not like that, but I think it's now founded under good ideas (respect rather than ownership).

Those were my intentions when i asked my father-in-law.

I wanted his blessing and to let him know that i would be there as a son to him and a provider and protector of his 'little girl'.

I never realized it was a property thing.

Yeah I understand that but I think that some people might not like the idea of having to ask permission to marry somebody.

Yeah, it all depends on the situation...some people don't have a good relationship with their parents, so in that case it'd be a little odd to do it...

Just think it can't hurt if she's relatively close to her parents, and even if you don't give a crap about traditions it'll still win you a whole lot of "Son-in-Law" points from her dad.

I guess if you're selfish you can think that way. But if it's important to the Dad or the girl then sometimes it's not about what you like.
