A game like Bioshock was a huge undertaking as well and it had very few technical issues, none of them glaring. CoD4 got unanimous raves across the board and I have not heard of any technical problems. That's game of the year stuff, IMO. Holding ME up to a lesser standard because it is a bigger game doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I don't think saying that it's "a game that huge" makes glaring technical issues ok. And to be clear, I haven't even played ME yet, I am just saying that I am reading that there are some serious issues with it, and I am wondering if that should be considered before appointing it game of the year status. I think a frequently choppy framerate is a pretty huge deal, personally. It certainly would be a huge deal if this was a sports game or a FPS, and it is something that can harm the immersiveness of the experience.

I think that because of the Bioware rep, the massive scope of the game and it's incredible hype and anticipation, it may well happen that a lot of real problems get glossed over by the press and gamers. And when voting for GotY, I don't think that's right. I don't have a dog in this fight, so it's no big deal. Just my opinion.

Excellent points. I really need to get CoD4 soon, and I still want to play AC. As of now it's Bioshock #1, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune #2. I am getting ME and College Hoops 2K8 tomorrow.

I seriously doubt Mass Effect will win GOTY, at least not the overall GOTY. I think Mario Galaxy is a shoe in for that from the critics.

Re: Game of The Year Discussion

I haven't played Halo3 but from everything I read everyone feels it's more like Halo 2.5 in HD.

If that's the case, I'd take AC over Halo 3 ANYDAY.

This is why companies don't take chances on games... people would rather play the series' they're familiar with in another iteration than something new. It's a damn shame.

I haven't played it either, but I do think that "fun factor" plays a lot in my mind. I know Halo 3 is a well done game, it just isn't that fun for me. Online isn't the awesome gameplay for me that others have...

I know it's a great game, but if you're talking about "incredible hype and anticipation", how can you not realize that Halo has had infinitely more hype (and didn't really deliver IMO). Halo 3 is really Halo 2.5. I personally expect more from a next gen version of a game. I know I'm harsh on Halo, and I can't blame them for just sitting pretty.

It really is a great game, just not for me, but I also expect more innovation. Just my opinion that Halo 3 was all hype and released a "safe" game, not anything new.

Bioshock gave us new. ME gives us new. Assassin's Creed gave us new (and pretty). Even Super Mario Galaxy is innovating. What is really new about Halo 3 (aside from the damn cool online video stuff)?

We absolutely torch EA and 2k for not giving us more every YEAR, yet Bungie gets a pat on the back when they had like 4 years to just clean up Halo 2 for the 360?

Perhaps for a different thread, sorry if it's a detour.

I am with you. I certainly don't think Halo 3 is GotY material.

Yeah Halo 3 isn't very original.

Halo's singe playe campaign was GREAT.

                Halo 2 multiplayer was great.

I think Halo 3 was trying to get a good campaign and online mode and it did a good job of that...but it just feels the same IMO.

IMO Bioshock does not have the replay value to win GOTY. That's me, I think ME will have tons of replay value for a single player game and COD 4 also. Mario always has replay value because its just simple and fun.

I'll play ME 2morrow, but until I do I guess Bioshock is the GOTY until I play ME, COD4 and Mario. Halo isn't considered because it just doesn't break any new ground for me.

Also and by ME I mean Mass Effect

I have played through it 2X and enjoyed it immensely. But, as you say, that's me. It's a game I will always want to own; it won't be getting traded in, that's for sure.

I don't have a Wii, but I hear Mario Galaxy is absurdly good.

I think most publications will narrow it down to Mario Galaxy and Bioshock, with Mario getting the ultimate nod. CoD4 will get a distant third. Mass Effect appears to have too many issues.

Super Mario Galaxy is simple yet addictive. There's so much to do, and it's not repetitive...I played for a couple hours today/tonight (I'm on vacation this week). I'm giving it the Mom test Thursday when I bring the Wii to their house for Thanksgiving.

SMG is as hard or as easy as you want. I personally am trying to get all the stars, but if I wanted to advance further in the story I could do that very fast as well.

I want to play ME before judging, but I would have trouble picking between Bioshock or ME and SMG. They are different types of games, and both do what they intend so well.

While I don't think Halo 3 is the best single player experience this year (it was actually pretty dissapointing in some regards), the multiplayer is just incredibly addicting more so than any other game, but I agree, it's not terribly original from what was done in the past. It might win because of the whole package the game offers, but I think there are better candidates when it comes to new franchises that came up this year and lived up to expectations.

Call of Duty 4 is really really fun, but it's not terribly different than the previous offerings. I look at SMG the same way since I've been playing Mario games for 2 decades now, and while it never gets old, it's not really that fresh to me. Still, GREAT games that are deservingly at the top and I wouldn't argue if they win the title.

I haven't played Assasin's Creed yet, but it looks like this could be another solid candidate and it seems that it brings with it a really original and lenghty experience. Bioshock too, but I found the gameplay to be very repetitive at times and I actually haven't finished it yet since I kind of got tired of the grind of upgrading and hacking, but I'll get back to it once I finish with...

Crysis. This is my pick for game of the year so far. It's a game that brought a lot of hype with it in terms of visuals, and it delivered. Not only that, but the game is just incredible on all fronts. The story is solid, the AI is smart, and the nano suit breathes an air of originality that a lot of shooters are lacking.

The open ended experience at the beginning of the game makes Far Cry (it's spiritual predecesor) on the PC look like a completely linear experience. And the multiplayer is a lot of fun too. Only problem is the ridiculous requirements to get it looking it's best.

But yeah, still have to pick up AC and Mass Effect to get a definite opinion.

I have played all the big games this year, and Super Mario Galaxy has blown me away. Its fun, there is so much variety, and you just keep wanting to get more and more stars instead of actually completing the game. To me, a game that is great to play that makes you want to come back is so much better then one with drop dead graphics but you are done with it in 6-7 hours, like Call of Duty 4. I love CoD, but once i finished, I dont see myself going back, with Super Mario, I do, and im 31 years old!
