A game like Bioshock was a huge undertaking as well and it had very few technical issues, none of them glaring. CoD4 got unanimous raves across the board and I have not heard of any technical problems. That's game of the year stuff, IMO. Holding ME up to a lesser standard because it is a bigger game doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I don't think saying that it's "a game that huge" makes glaring technical issues ok. And to be clear, I haven't even played ME yet, I am just saying that I am reading that there are some serious issues with it, and I am wondering if that should be considered before appointing it game of the year status. I think a frequently choppy framerate is a pretty huge deal, personally. It certainly would be a huge deal if this was a sports game or a FPS, and it is something that can harm the immersiveness of the experience.
I think that because of the Bioware rep, the massive scope of the game and it's incredible hype and anticipation, it may well happen that a lot of real problems get glossed over by the press and gamers. And when voting for GotY, I don't think that's right. I don't have a dog in this fight, so it's no big deal. Just my opinion.
