Bleszinski: Looking ahead
Gears 3 to have RPG elements?
Ken Levine is brilliant. He's been in the game for years and he's finally getting a new set up and kicking butt. There was a time when the industry warmed down, and then Bioshock came along.
When I first saw Bioshock I thought, “how is this going to sell?” As a nerd I thought it was amazing but I was worried that a fifteen year old kid would pick it up and think “what the **** am I looking at”?
But it pleased me to no end that the game did so well. I had a conversation with Harvey Smith – one of the lead designers on Deus Ex – and said to him the future of shooters is RPGs. He said he completely agreed.
I think Harvey Smith is a brilliant, under-used designer as well. Randy Pitchford at Gearbox is an absolutely brilliant designer and business man, and I think Borderlands is not getting as much hype as it should, because it really looks like a more accessible, shootery version of Fallout. Many would say Gears of War was the originator of the cover-based shooter and Gears 2 was the accomplishment of that goal –
Actually, WinBack was the first cover-based shooter.
And Wolfenstein 3D was the first FPS, but it was Doom that got the genre moving, much in the same way that Gears opened up the cover-shooter system.
Yeah I hear you.
So, many would say Gears of War was the originator of the cover-based shooter and Gears 2 was the accomplishment of that goal. For the future of the franchise, is it important that you innovate again?
It depends on where things go. I mean, one could wean that from the comments I made earlier about the future of shooters is RPGs and see where things are going with us.
Microsoft came down a few weeks before E3 and gave us a demo, and they’re now shipping out the dev kits; I think it’s great. When you start combining the motion-capture, the facial recognition, and the vocal recognition you can create some unique experiences. And of course more accessibility is always a good thing.
When you build an interface like that though you need to [specifically] design a game for it. It can’t just be tacked on.As game creators, anytime we see new tech like that the ideas always come out. I can’t go into the ones I’ve had because, obviously, someone else might do it. Y’know, we’ll take a look at Natal - no promises - but it’s likely that the classic control interface is what Epic will be working on in the foreseeable future.
But I think there’s ways that you could merge the two interfaces and supplement a classic game with Natal controls to make something compelling.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

Re: Gears of War 2
I'd be a fan of the devs implementing RPG type elements into the gameplay of GOW3 but not so much the Natal experience. A highly touted franchise like GOW should not prey on the consumer in forcing them to purchase an upgrade console or expensive console peripherals in order to play a game unless said franchise created peripherals specifically for it's game (ie: Guitar Hero & Rock Band).Comment

Re: Gears of War 2
Little confused here. So is Dark Corners the same as The All Fronts game that is being released?
Are all the dlc released from this game put into one for this pack or is Dark Corners just 3 new maps and All Fronts all the maps with the added campaign level.Comment

Re: Gears of War 2
All Fronts 1600 points version:
Includes all the maps released so far (Flashback,Combustible,Snow Blind), the 7 NEW maps called Dark Corners, and the Single player campaign chapter.
All Fronts 1200 points version:
7 NEW Dark Corners maps and Single player campaign. This is basically the version for people who have all the previously released map packs.
So for people like me who haven't bought any of the previous maps it's a really great deal. For those who already have the older maps, that's still a good deal for 7 new maps and a new single player chapter.Comment

Bleszinski on Dark Corners SP and Natal
Gears of War 2 designer Cliff Bleszinski has shed some light on the single-player/co-op campaign element of the upcoming Dark Corners expansion, revealing that it's a 90-minute section that sees Marcus and Dom play dress-up.
"It's a 90-minute section that was actually snipped out of Gears of War 2, where Marcus and Dom are actually going to the Locust homeworld and they're basically suited up in Locust armour and have a choice - because they knocked out a couple of Therons - they can go in guns-blazing as they always do, Rambo-style, or they can go with a more stealth approach, so it's a little bit of stealth in the Gears universe," Bleszinski told Major Nelson's podcast.
"You get Achievements for playing the mode either way and it kind of plugs right into the main game. It's actually the first time we've done any sort of single-player DLC. It's kind of a test to see whether people dig it."Bleszinski also clarified his recent comments on Project Natal, in which he suggested Epic would stick with traditional controls but might consider merging the two interfaces if something compelling game to mind.
"If there's any future Gears products [coughs elaborately], it's not the kind of thing you tag onto a game like that, right?" he noted on Major Nelson's podcast.
"Microsoft is very smart to go after this kind of Wii Fit type market. My mum this Christmas asked for a Wii and a Wii Fit and she doesn't play games at all, and I'm like, 'Damn you Nintendo!', but that's cool, right, that she's playing games she wouldn't have normally played.
"So what you have is the 360 which has captured a lot of the video viewing audience [with] movies and Netflix, it's captured a lot of the online gaming, it's captured a lot of the hardcore games, and you know segue that in, so now you have your yoga programme, now you have your dodgeball thing, you have the creepy kid Milo who wants to drown you in the pond - you can do all of it.
"And I'm a fan of... the whole system works amazingly well, they brought it out a few weeks before E3 to give us a peek at it. The driving, you just put your hands forward and steer, and it's... I don't feel any lag with it, it's incredibly crisp and accurate.
"Will it replace traditional gaming? No, but it's another amazing way that we can expand the gaming experience to a wider audience and enhance what's already there."Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

Re: Gears of War 2
can I download the 1200 point thing and play online in ranked matches even though I don't have the combustible and snowblind packs? I want to play the dark corners maps but don't really care to spend the extra for the other two map packs (even though I do realize it's a pretty nice deal).Lux y VeritasComment

Re: Gears of War 2
IGN gave the DLC a 7.8.
The Road to Ruin chapter included is labeled as a deleted scene, and that's exactly what it feels like.Comment

Re: Gears of War 2
The new maps and SP drop tomorrow...........I just wish the SP campaign was a good 2-3 hours worth like Ratchet & Clanks :Quest for Booty (which I have yet to try, but heard good things). IGN says 30 minutes, but I read elsewhere that there is a good 90 minutes worth of SP content. Hopefully more reviews come soon.Comment
