Eurogamer: Gears of War 2 Review - 9/10

Like the original, on one level, Gears 2 is a brilliant advertisement for Unreal Engine 3, glorying in soft-body physics, glinting textures, and massive explosions. Even after a year of non-stop eye candy, Epic's series provides some of the most fiercely pretty visuals you'll get the chance to look at, even if its world is so charmingly ugly. Yet on another level, the game's a calling card from a developer that continues to mature in design as well as technology. The first game slowed down the crazy pace of Unreal Tournament - forcing you into using the environment every bit as much as the weapon-set - and the sequel continues to build on that with ease, but alongside the bare mechanics, Gears of War 2 shows a new interest in stories and varying the action. Best of all, it has the native intelligence to bring both aspects together.

Gameplayer - 9.5

It isn’t a perfect ride, of course, sometimes the AI can stand a foot away and ignore you when you’ve been downed and you’re groveling for their help, and while the game doesn’t end before it begins like the previous outing, we still found ourselves wanting more – but some may view that as a positive point rather than a negative though. Those minor annoyances aside, Gears of War 2 is a blockbuster title in every sense of the word and it is a must-buy for all 360 action fans.

Pros:
+Gorgeous environments
+Engaging story
+Improved gameplay mechanics
+Fun new multiplayer gametypes
+Bot support
+Incredibly addictive Horde mode

Cons:
-Vehicle sequences can be frustrating
-AI can get in your way
-Occasional glitches and framerate hiccups

All of the multiplayer, both co-op and competitive, completely makes up for any that was lacking in the first game. For those that thought that Gears just wasn’t suited to multiplayer gameplay, that it was too tactical and slow and was better suited to a single player experience, prepare to eat your words. It’s fantastic, and rounds out the complete package that is Gears of War 2.

I could go on about other little details of the game that are very pleasing – the war journal that tracks achievements and collectibles, the achievements themselves, the Flashback Map Pack – but you should really go explore those on your own. Gears of War 2 is a must own for every Xbox 360 owner. Despite a few minor missteps in the way the story and action play out, and a few forgivable technical blemishes, Gears of War 2 is about as close as you can get to the perfect gaming package. Now the waiting begins for 3.

Thanks for the reviews. Seems like most of the small complaints are for the single player mode, which I care nothing about.

Man this website just gushes over any major Xbox exclusive... it's hard to take their word seriously sometimes.

They are a great source of pre-release info, however.

Please quit showing these videos I no longer own a 360, have vowed to myself that I would not get another but this is making it real hard. I love my PS3 right now but these teasers are making me waant to go out and get one. I will not look at this thread again . Okay I'm not being very truthful. I knew when I got rid of my 360 this was going to happen. Gotta stay strong. But I am so weak right now. Peace!!!! Gonna go look at the Video again

I found it funny the teamxbox reviewer kept saying the multiplayer was weak in the first one.

Best online shooter IMO

Right, but what would it matter if every major exclusive is almost flawless in their eyes? Would you not expect them to gush over this game? It looks to be worthy of the praise.

My point is I take their reviews with a grain of salt otherwise. I'd rather read what a place like EuroGamer has to say in terms of a final review.

But that is simply not true, and if you were to go back and read their reviews for exclusive 360 games, you would see that this isn't the case. Just recently they were down on Fable II more than others.

"Maybe they should call the game “Retirement”, since that’s the most attractive aspect of it. When I actually had missions I needed to complete, I was frustrated by dumb things like bad collision detection and a less than helpful dog making the whole thing excruciating at times. The fact that Fable II is best when you’re done with it could be seen as one of the ultimate back-handed compliments. It’s not. I’ll probably keep playing it for ages, at least until I can afford to buy that castle."

Gameplay Question: How does this game relate to Halo? I do not like Halo what so ever. Does it take a million bullets to kill someone in GRAW? What about strategy, is it run and gun or is there a little stealth involved?
