    Re: Red Faction Guerilla

how can nobody on here be talking about this incredible MP demo... I have been playing it non stop since Thursday.

Most god Damned fun I have had playing a MP game in years. Not so much an online shooter but an online "game".

    here's some of my findings:

This may be a tough sell for the CoD/Halo crowd as it is a much different feeling with the 3rd person perspective and the vertical nature of the game play. It appears to me as if you can get past the fact that it's not a fast twitch shooter but instead a fast twitch game, you may enjoy this.

there is only one (of 6 in retail) game types and 2 (of 21) maps to play. It has 15 unlockables out of 120? (skins and cosmetics mostly right now) that save in the demo for the TWO WEEKS that this will be available. the MP demo will be pulled around retail release day (June 2).

there is so much variety in how you can attack each problem or enemy in front of you that the fast twitch game play presents itself as INSTANT decisions that you need to make in choosing to use one of the many backpacks available to escape, evade or attack an enemy. You want to decide quickly whether to close the distance for an instant kill melee attempt with the hammer or fire one of the many weapons available or combine the backpack use with the weapons. the quick weapon switching allowed me to use many different types of attacks and or weapons in each single engagement with an enemy. You can also decide whether to destroy or rebuild the objective before during or after an enemy engagement. the one game type available is like a "King of the Hill" mode for which you earn XP points for assisting with destroying, rebuilding or holding the objective. In combat, you can instantly chose (depending on which backpack you have on at the moment) to go high above and evade, go forward and attack, blast through or close the distance and close attack... etc, etc. The learning curve was minor based on me using the SP demo as a practice ground for the controls (although backpacks are not in the SP demo) and the games are frantic yet you have enough time to consider your options.

the menus, matchmaking and reports are fast, complete and well executed IMO. I moved quickly into my games and connected instantly and had no lag. This appears to be a complete MP experience and is very polished. The Matchmaking modes and games are derived by the server, settings adjusted according to play lists (ala Bungie) and according to Volition will be well supported with multiple game variants presented in matchmaking as gamers report their likes/dislikes. there is also a veto option in the menu and an auto-start but no join in progress. For example in one match the starting weapons varied slightly as did the speed was increased to 110%. There are also private matches (not in the demo) where many variants can be adjusted. There is party support in the demo and retail. The beta last year allowed them to make a lot of corrections to the MP and it shows in this release. It will be in my library as a different type of MP game rather than just a death match shooter.

I'm sure I may find things that I am not thrilled with and it's certainly not for everyone but it seems to offer as rich a MP experience as there is out there for those that it appeals to.

<hr style="color: rgb(226, 226, 226);" size="1"> <!-- / icon and title --> <!-- message --> couple other things I noticed are host switching in case of a host drop, pretty seamless excepts it resets your location to a spawn point but all other things are intact. Also a nice switch in the times of day for each map (2 in demo) 21 in full game plus a time of day change or two is nice.

there is so much diversity there in the way you want to play the game. I love the Rhino pack to run through walls people but I totally dig the jet pack and remote charges and raining bombs from the sky. On certain maps (or in certain situations) stealth pack and a hammer is a melee players dream. Watched two snipers jetpack to a tower on warlords only to have one of our guys below out of the line of fire, drop the huge frikken thing while the snipers went tumbling, jetpacking off to have to fight it out on the ground.

Kind of cool too that you can rebuild the walls around the checkpoints after securing it just to give a couple of more seconds to defend an attack.

I am having a blast. Turn the speed up and adjust the controls to alt 1 (left trigger zoom). the game moves smooth as butter too without any hiccups no matter what happens.

***PS3 was having connection issues and in fact I believe volition pulled the demo until they figure out how to fix.

360 I have had a few times where I canceled and restarted but n the whole I have never played an online game where I connected so quickly and easily from game to game (CoD WaW is close)

    couple other observations:

there is a "Party up" button at the end of each match if you want to stay with some of the current team. Also, evidently the retail game includes a spectator mode and in "Detonator game mode (VIP) you can pass the Vip off to a team mate if you just want to protect or kill.

this game is a blast when working as a team each with different packs (abilities). The most fun I see depends on them mixing up game variants or customs matches. So many creative possibilities

      Game Informer Review - 9

The single-player campaign is lengthy, and continually rewarding. Don’t be surprised, however, if you shun this experience for multiplayer. Wrecking Crew mode is the most enjoyable controller-passing game that I’ve come across since Burnout’s Crash mode. The goal of this mode is to tally as much destruction as you can. Your friends then have to try and beat your score. On top of this, Red Faction offers 125 ranks worth of depth in its competitive multiplayer. Deathmatching in destructive playgrounds is a powerful proposition that changes the tactics of war. Why bother with a headshot when you can drop a bridge that kills five? Being able to change classes mid-match through backpack pick-ups is also a cool idea that works well with the team-based modes.

No matter what mode you enter, Red Faction: Guerrilla delivers on its promise of destruction, and offers an experience unlike anything else out there.

      Second opinion - 8.5

The EDF liberated Mars, but the victory went to their heads and they now operate with the same sense of authority as the Ultor Corporation they put out of commission. After a startling turn of events, protagonist Alec Mason takes arms in retaliation. His solution? Destroy all the EDF property in sight and shoot every EDF soldier standing in his way. Red Faction Guerrilla delivers thrills on both fronts, with a fantastic selection of weapons with which to spark the revolution and the best destruction engine in video game history. Whether you’re planting charges, shooting missiles, using a sledgehammer, or driving a big rig through the building, it will fall. The open world gameplay best resembles Mercenaries 2, but Red Faction overcomes the many technical hurdles that kept that game in mediocrity with sound gunplay and a polished experience. The only detriments holding Guerrilla back are the repetitive mission types, unimaginative art direction, and a detached story — the side missions could have benefited from tangential narratives. Regardless, the grand scale of destruction makes the thrill of laying waste to everything on the planet a must-play experience.

From the 2 demos, no way do I see this game getting that high of a score. Interesting. I didn't really care for either. Had some fun in the single player one, but it was short lived and couldn't see myself playing it for long stretches.

Agreed, I thought the game was quite terrible from the demo, but maybe the full version is different. Will have to rent and see, but definitely not on my list to purchase.

              ***DISCLAIMER***

I played the SP demo a couple of times (never finishing it and I did not see what all the fuss was about either) I went back again to check it out about a week later and took my time and tried different strategies and finished the missions a couple times and it clicked. the MP has now owned me.

Did you guys play the demo to completion? did you not feel the intensity and see the incredible physics engine at work wit the cannon firing on the jeeps and blowing them off the road in the last sequence? Also to note that this game is an Open World with a mission structure in place so you can go about and choose what you want to do. It is not on rails.

the key for me though is the Multiplayer. It is a sweet change from the standard FPS fodder of online games and adds a variety of gameplay and fun sorely missing in online games IMO. Not to mention the interface and game variation of matchmaking is nearly as good as Bungie's (but faster). Also the PS3 had a little connection problem in the MP demo so it was pulled but hopefully it will be back up soon so PS3 users can see what the MP is all about ... JET PACKS!

              Official score: 9/10
              Pros
              - Massive map, loads to do, Awesome weaponary, interesting plot.
              - Beautiful graphics and some of the best destruction effects EVER.

Cons ( I myself would not consider these cons, very minor).
              - The enemys all look a trifle similar
              - Blood in the game but not in the cutscenes.

Quote from review: "Some games are what you expect, some games exceed expectations but games like RF:G come along and give you something you didnt even know you wanted. Genius."
Nice little walk thru of the SP demo to give you an idea of what you may have missed about the depth of gameplay here

THQ and Volition have truly outdone themselves with Red Faction: Guerrilla. They have effectively “mined” the eight-year-old franchise and struck gaming gold, combining several recent yet tried–and-true gameplay mechanics with a spectacular physics engine, top-notch production values and a great story, resulting in a worthy (and easily the best ) sequel to the franchise as well as a highly original product in its own right. How often does that happen? For action-adventure and shooter fans looking for a fresh, solid and fun title to last them well into the summer, this is a day one, “must buy” purchase.

                    IGN Review - 8.0

If all you care about is blasting things to pieces, you’re going to love Red Faction: Guerrilla. Seeing a tower topple to the ground in a seemingly realistic fashion after smacking away its support beams with a sledgehammer is really a thrill, and though it may lose its appeal as you continue through the lengthy campaign, it’s still worth checking out, particularly after you unlock some of the better weapons. What’s more disappointing about Volition’s effort is the rocky mission design, bland artistic style, weak plot and anemic character development, which shifts too much focus to the element of destruction to maintain a level of excitement. Its enjoyable gunplay mechanics along with the weapons and opportunity for tearing apart structures carry over into the online space, where Volition has built an impressive multiplayer suite that includes stat tracking, unlocks, and a number of game modes that focus on flattening buildings. While the game may not do everything right, it’s your best bet for free-form demolition and unpretentious entertainment.
