That makes no sense. So these friends of yours buy 1 game a year or something?

You wouldn't know how often (or not so often) people buy games sometimes. For instance, I value my games that I purchase and make sure that it's the right purchase, and I play it for a very long time. That's one main reason I don't have a next-gen system, because I just don't need one right now. I'm still playing my games.

At any rate, I do happen to know people that will now only buy Halo 3 and not GTA IV.

yeah, but wouldnt an 8 month delay help those who are decided between halo and gt4 to end up with both, just purchased months apart?
i would think this delay helps those who can't shell out 120+ within the same month for two games...

Well that's good for them but GTA will still sell millions of copies.

Either way, this delay gives me more time to spend with some of the other titles coming out later this year, mainly Mass Effect. Cant forget about NBA 2k8 either.

GTA IV delayed to make MS give in?

As most have already heard, GTA IV has been delayed till Q2 2008. Speculation is running all over the internet as to the exact reason for this delay. As far as gamers knew, everything was fine at E3 and on track for a big October launch.

As reported earlier this week, XF had learned about certain future titles requiring the 360 HDD for data caching, but hadn't received any specifics on which games and when this would happen. Yesterday, when XF got word of GTA IV being delayed, we had to call our source. Apparently Rockstar wants GTA IV to give a seamless experience with load times limited as much as possible and void of loading whenever possible. This requires a HDD according to our source.

MS, while allowing certain titles (MMOs & soccer managers) to use the HDD already and reportedly allowing titles to do it in the future, did not want to segregate the 360 core users this early. Everything our source said made sense when we looked at what Shane Kim said in a recent interview with GamePro.com:

There was a rumor that Grand Theft Auto IV is not going to be compatible with the Core system because the game may require a hard drive. Is incompatibility with the Core model something Microsoft can't allow, or are you flexible on issues like this?

SK: No, we want to support all of the Xbox 360s, otherwise it becomes very confusing. We really want to avoid that as much as possible.

So what would you say if Rockstar Games demanded you have a hard drive if you want to play GTAIV on the Xbox 360?

SK: We get to make the call on who gets published on our platform...[inaudible] we'd push back on any publisher saying things like that.

If everything we're being told is true, it's a good and bad thing. It means developers really do want to use the 360 to it's full potential and make better games for you and I. It also means MS may very well limit what 360 owners get to play because they want to drag their feet on the HDD announcement till the Cores are completely off the shelves. Hopefully, someone will get this fixed soon so we can get back to just playing games.

I dont see what the big deal is for MS. Rockstar can just put requires HDD on the back of the box. It was stupid for MS to make the core anyway. I say developers start putting requires HDD opn the back of the box so they can stop worrying about the disk space. Anybody who doesn't have a HDD by now should be **** outta luck anyway.

MS should put a price drop on the Core to get rid of them, and allow GTA IV to require the hard drive. Especially if they put in the price drop before the holiday, allowing a lot of time between clearing inventory and the Spring release date of GTA IV.

Rockstar needs more time to optimize the PS3 port, while the 360 version is held up by MS not wanting to isolate Core owners by requiring the HDD for such a huge game.

So, trouble on both fronts.

the 50 million was for exclusive content, which has no bearing on the release date. Thus, that's irrelevant.

You could be right, but I have a hard time believing that $50 million is ever irrelevant.
