Remember Microsoft paid Rockstar $50 million that Sony didn't for this game. If the issue was with the PS3, they would have still released the 360 version on time and just delayed the PS3 version. You really think Microsoft would be okay with Rockstar delaying their game to 'spare Sony some humiliation'?

Good candidates for the delay are thus 360-related: that they can't fit the game onto a standard DVD, and/or they need to cache the game to a HDD, and MS can't allow the Core users to get screwed like that. Remember, too, that most of the hands-on reports detail that the game ran choppy, and that was the 360 version.

i'm gonna say it's a combination of both 360/PS3 problems.. but really though... how can fingers not be pointed moreso at the PS3 than 360? 360's been the version demo'd and showed to the press... 360's been the version they used to make both excellent traillers... according to Rockstar, which version was 2 weeks behind the other? and when asked about why GTA IV wasn't at Sony's E3.. sony's response was "they didn't send us anything".. i'm sure if everything was all peaches and cream with the PS3 version, they would have been showing it A LOT more

i think Rockstar bit off a lil more than it could chew trying to aim for an october 07 release.. it's disappointing but oh well

Oh I definitely agree with that; I'm not suggesting the PS3 version was ready to go or something. My point was that any problems with the PS3 version are ultimately irrelevant: they wouldn't hold back both versions to satisfy Sony when MS paid an extra 50 mil into the deal. If the game's delayed, it's delayed because of the 360 version.

Because if it was just PS3 problems they probably would have still released the 360 version on time...especially with all the extra money M$ put into it.

Has any company done that, other than if they started working on the other version of the game after one version already came out?

Blue Shift did that for ESPN Major League Baseball (released the Xbox version mid April, and the PS2 version early May).

Yea but is that GTA. This franchise is huge, and with the cost of next gen development, I think they wanna have a fair playing field for both systems.

the 50 million was for exclusive content, which has no bearing on the release date. Thus, that's irrelevant.

so that makes PS3 problems irrelevant? lol MS put money into episodic DLC exclusivity... not exclusivity to the game itself.. and do u honestly believe that sony has the "hey it's ok if u don't get this game out on time and let our rivals bring it out first.. just take ur time and make the game great on our platform" attitude for a known system seller?

Like I said previously.. if we're going to blame consoles (in this situation).. we'll blame the both of them, not just the PS3 or just the 360.. it's a combination of both (if it's actually platform related issues delaying the game)

The game just won't be ready for october 07

Pachter: PS3 Port Caused GTA IV Delay

Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter says Take-Two management has "stumbled badly for the first time" with the delay of GTA IV, and said that he believes difficulties porting the game to the PlayStation 3 are to blame and that the company's new green light policy appears to be a failure.

"We think it is likely," said Pachter, "that the Rockstar team had difficulty in building an exceptionally complicated game for the PS3, and failed to recognize how far away from completion the game truly was until recently."

"We think it is also likely that Take-Two had a contractual commitment to Sony that it would not favor competitor Microsoft by launching the Xbox 360 version of GTA IV prior to launching the PS3 version," he continued, "and believe that any delay of the PS3 version necessitated a delay of the Xbox 360 version."

The delay has caused somewhat of a valuation quandary for Pachter, as he adds "we are unprepared to predict what Take-Two management can truly deliver until we see some positive results."

"We think that new management is doing many things right," he says, "but believe that some structural obstacles remain. The company has begun an initiative to improve the green light process for new projects, but given the delays of Manhunt and GTA, its process for monitoring projects under development appears to be a failure."

Pachter concludes, "Until we see evidence of better controls over work in process and greater diligence in project selection, we are not confident that the company will gain market share in future years."

Only problem is they are going to lose customers to Halo 3. I know a handful of people that can only choose one or the other, and won't wait another 6 months to get the other.

Wouldn't it be better for those people considering the game doesn't come out until many months later?

If they normally buy one or the other then this delay benefits them.
