Another quote from the GamePlayer article:

"It’s not all sunshine, lollipops and…
Now for the bit you may not have been expecting: the online mode still needs a bit of work on a few different levels to really make the most of its potential. For starters, lock-on is too good. When you lock onto a target it follows their movements, even when out of clear line-of-sight. Plus, with a little bit of practice moving from lock-on to head-shot with a flick of the left-stick becomes a little too easy.

This is a problem in two ways. Firstly, it means many gunfights are over in seconds as whoever locks-on first can knock off a few HPs with ease before the other player can react. The skill of aiming at a moving target is gone. Secondly, it could create an instant gulf between new users and veterans who can just head-shot with ease. Nothing you puts you off an experience than getting waxed easily by better players. It will put serious stress on the matchmaking code, and from past experience, matchmaking works about as well as a deaf dude at a customer service desk.

Something needs to be tweaked here: perhaps they could look at scrapping the lock-on for multiplayer altogether, or providing a ‘move’ that a player can use to unlock themselves instantly during combat. An anti-lock feature.
The controls, while awesome in single player, feel a little too sluggish in the heat of multiplayer combat. It takes a relative age for your character to scale a fence, for example, or jump into a car, which leaves you open to instant lock-on death. We’re not sure if the animations can be sped up or not: perhaps a better way would be to not allow a target to be locked onto during one of these animations.

We also found the speed it takes to turn around infuriating. If you start getting shot in the back you’re usually well dead before you have a chance to turn around. The camera doesn’t want to be controlled by you – we mentioned this in our previous article – and it prefers to track along behind you, showing you what you would realistically see rather than what a man with eyes in the back of his head would see. This is fine for single player, but it’s deadly in multiplayer. Could a 180 degree turn button do the trick? We’re not sure. It’s not in tune with the way Euphoria works – the whole ‘Niko has momentum’ thing – but it could be a design tweak worth exploring to ensure a more enjoyable experience.

We also found ourselves spawning in front of opponents. And that just straight-up sucks. There is nothing worse than dying, spawning and then dying again before you even know where you are. We’re sure this is in the process of being tweaked, though."

Damn, I hope some of these issues have been tweaked. The whole lock-on issue is disappointing if it remained untouched in the time after this hands-on session. I want gun battles that last longer than a few seconds...UGH !!

            * When rendering at 1080p, the game looks amazing and the city is so detailed that you could wonder around for hours at a time without an objective and find interesting new things

I don't think we should expect online to be like GRAW or Rainbow. It think it'll be a little over the top, which could be fine. As long as it's fun.

                Another Review(Sort of):

                - There is no loading (excepting on the launching of the game).
                - The other characters will be very natural.
                - Graphics aren't amazing, but they are very good (some flutters)
                - The spirit of this GTA IV is based on : originality, realism, coherence, references, violence, provocation, sex, but less fun than in the previous versions.
                - General atmosphere of this game is excellent (production, noises, etc.)
                - In the dialogues, there are lot of unforgettable retorts, always so tasty.
                - Multi-player is very good, but cooperation is medium.
                - The content (size of the town, vehicles, weapons, minigames, etc) is rich and various.
                - The gameplay is not so easy at the beginning.

I'm not expecting anything remotely similar to either one of those games. I'm actually glad that GTA4 is not like that because I have to be honest and say that at times FPS games start to get old to me.

I just hope they were able to tweak the lock-on system so it's not so "automatic". For the lock-on cursor to follow the human target even when he's not in plain site (behind a building running away), well that's ridiculous!! Does the targeted (locked on) person ever become unlocked?? If the other player just keeps holding on to the left trigger, can he run after the other guy and pursue him until there's a clear shot and then "BANG - DEAD!!!"

I really don't expect this to ruin the online gameplay for me if it remains that way....oh well. Seems that everyone who has played the online modes have enjoyed their experience immensely so I'll just sit back and enjoy my experience as well

LOL I just read on GTAgaming how advertising on Chicago buses have been stopped. Basically the local Fox affiliate made a big stink about it.

Ah...Gotta love the power of the press sometimes

I read that you (as a host) can turn off auto aim and just use manual aim. That is sure to be a popular option among custom games.

For the PC. It is actually pretty fun but the gunfights suck imo. You lock on and basically spray at the guy until he dies.

edit: nvm, I'm thinking of vice city online.
