but god of war is LINEAR. while GTA4 is expansive and able to be explored throughout making it have multiple paths to destinations while looking as good as it can with really great city textures and just jaw dropping lighting, water effects and extras...

the revolutinary comes from the fact that crackdown, just cuase and saints row had nowhere near that much detail in their games regarding the textures and lighting as does GTa4.

for now GTA4 IS the best looking game i've seen as a whole.

I think GTA IV is also one of the most customizable experiences outside of sports games. It's not linear (which isn't new) but I love the fact that you can either choose to play like a maniac or follow the missions and leave the fluff alone. Hell, even when you just follow the missions it's not a sure shot that you're following it like mission 1.2.3 it's more like (after the first few missions) you can hop around different missions depending on your mood.

That alone makes it one of the deeper and most satisfying game experiences for me.

I think that's a fair assessment. It has furthered the sandbox genre which is a mark of an all time game IMO.
i agree. this is THE best non sports game i have ever played. and all the people who say this game aint no 10 and this game is boring or whatever, the sales of the game prove u wrong. so what u say is moot.

It's not the best ever for me personally, but it's the best non-sports game for me. COD4 was fantastic too, but this game just draws me in more. I'm not that far into yet, but I can tell already that it is an elite game and one of the best ever.

My GOAT is a sports game, but I wouldn't be able to decide if I had to. Probably one of the NCAAs or Baseball Stars (for it's time), maybe College Hoops or possibly The Show. Then again, I'm a sports game junkie.

yeah man the sales and critics don't lie. even though hype and bribery could BE a culprit after playing it now it's REALLY easy to see just how special of a game this is

the game is special no doubt. a lot of times hype is unjustified but not in this case.

is the game the greatest of all time? that can be subjective depending on the person, but is it ONE OF the greatest of all times? hell yes!

Am I the only Vice City fan out there? I loved that game so much. You didn't have to eat, work out, and be annoyed by friends. You had the classic Kent Paul and Ricardo Diaz characters that are still great to this day. Finally you have Ray Liotta playing Tommy Vercetti (" I'm surrounded by pricks!") and it doesnt get much better than that. Sure the game was short but it was a classic. I actually played it on my 360 for about 4 hours today before watching the NFL playoffs.

Absolutely not; it's not even the best game released this year.

Totally agree. Different people like different things though. For me GTAIV isn't even in the top 10 or maybe 20 games of all time..

well in some aspects it is.

As far as creating a breathing, living city. YES. No other game to my recollection has created a background for a game. Other games have been attractive but no real city life, or not enough random-ness. GTA did that portion excellently.

game is amazing, but there are better games out there (mass effect being one of them IMO as well as MGSIV)

Vice City is my favorite GTA game... it captured the 80's (at least what I remember of it) greatly.

Dang right. It captures Florida and the 80s perfectly. Tommy Vercetti is better than Niko and CJ in my opinion. Lance Vance, Kent Paul, Ricardo Diaz, and that hilarious lawyer Rosenberg are all classics. The Death Row mission will go down in the annals of videogame history and what about the mission where you get the mansion?

I agree with that. I don't think any other game has completely immersed me in the environment like GTA 4 has. The city just feels alive, and the level of detail is unprecedented in gaming. Obviously the other aspects of the game are not at the same level, but I think when you put it all together in one package you have one of the best video game experiences ever. Not quite sure if it's the best, but it is definitely up there.

                                I voted not even close.

While I agree that GTA IV is one of the most technically advanced and well-polished games I've played this generation, it isn't even my favorite GTA. It's a great game, but when GTA 3 came out, there was nothing else really like it. GTA 4 isn't as groundbreaking as that. It still uses the same exact linear mission setup as it did years ago, and for all the graphical and technological improvements, there's still essentially the same level of interaction in GTA 4 as there was in GTA 3.

I was only drawn in enough to play the GTA 4 story once, and have barely touched it since. I don't really see how it has the qualities to make it the greatest of all time.
