I think I have gotten a feel for this games niche.* If you want to play your hero/villain in your story then you play CoH/V.* If you want to play "a" hero/villain that rubs shoulders or trades blows with Superman and Batman in a DC story then you play DCU.* It sounds a bit obvious but you would probably expect some gray between the two.* You can try to force some gray but you will end up disappointed.
If DCU was marketed as a nonmmorpg with a shared online world then it would be 4 to 5 star title at that.* There are plenty of game elements that get you involved with other people for short periods of time but there isn't anything that really encourages long term involvement.* I think all of us would agree that we kept playing and paying for previous games long after the game wore out because of the people.* So fair am not seeing that hook here.
For me the game will be well worth the purchase price but I am not sure they will get many additional months of subscription from me.* If many people feel the same then a good game will be labeled as a failure.* It is the nature of the business but for games like this I would love to see a business model that could support a mmorpg that sold decent at release, had high drop off but managed to stay profitable by releasing a couple of decent content patches a year and getting another couple of months subscription fees from those.* It just doesn't work with today's models without a large enough constant subscription base.
