Re: Halo 3: ODST
GamePro Interview
GamePro: Bungie has said that ODST has become a far more ambitious project over the course of its development, to the point where it can't be considered an expansion pack. In what ways? How does that compare to the original scope of the project?
Joseph Staten: When we first announced ODST at Tokyo Game show last Fall, we hadn't proven we could execute on two, really ambitious parts of ODST's design -- ambitious because our team was much, much smaller than a typical Bungie team with a much shorter development timeline -- and those two things were the big, non-linear, nighttime city of New Mombasa and Firefight.
Frankly, we didn't want to over-promise and under-deliver. But that certainly made things more painful when we did execute on the nighttime city and Firefight -- as well as a nice, meaty campaign -- and then had to change our messaging to say, basically, "Hey, this game can stand on its own two feet!
It's big, ambitious and absolutely worth the cash!" In the end, even with the confusion, I'm glad we can say this with confidence now rather than making a risky claim last Fall. There's a ton of great content inside the ODST package for our fans to enjoy!GP: How is Firefight better than other co-op modes such as Gears of War 2's Horde or Call of Duty World at War's Nazi Zombies? On a side note, does the Bungie team have any love for Horde or Nazi Zombies (we do!)? Is there anything you've learned from those co-op experiences that you've applied to ODST's Firefight mode?
JS: We absolutely love Gears' Horde mode and World at War's Nazi Zombies -- and furthermore we love Left 4 Dead, Ghost Recon, TimeSplitters and all the other games that have made great "survival" modes over the years. What we've done with Firefight is take that same, ridiculously fun co-op experience and root it firmly in the Halo 3 sandbox.
This type of game experience is something our fan community has been demanding for years now. We actually had it on the early feature list for Halo 3 but with so many other huge systems underway it ultimately couldn't fit within the schedule.
ODST Firefight has vehicles, great physics, ruthless enemy A.I. Plus, we've added an evolved version of Halo 3's campaign scoring system as well as its difficulty modifying "skulls", all of which means that Firefight is a unique experience every time you play.
Some other survival modes follow a linear progression to a pre-determined end. An ODST Firefight remains dynamic, and will not end, as long as you and your ODST teammates have blood to bleed.GP: What is the new Pistol in ODST called? It seemed to play a lot like the original pistol from Halo 1. Was this a way to meet fans halfway by re-introducing one of the most beloved weapons in the FPS genre, but in a single-player setting?
JS: The pistol's official name is the M6S, which means it's a sound-suppressed version of Halo 1's M6 magnum. There is, of course, a well-known debate about the balance of the Halo 1 pistol in multiplayer, but I think everyone agrees it was a lot of fun in the campaign because of its ability to zoom-in and drop enemies with well-placed headshots.
When we were thinking of the kinds of weapons an ODST would want in a dangerous, urban environment -- what his "go to" weapons would be if he were on his own in a dark and dangerous city -- a sound-suppressed version of the pistol seemed like a great choice.
And when folks play ODST we think they'll again agree that it's perfectly suited for campaign and Firefight where it's always fun to grease Covenant bastards with a single bullet between the eyes.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

Re: Halo 3: ODST
Digital Spy Preview
"Duel-wield is gone, regenerating health is gone, motion-tracker is gone, falling damage is back. He's not as powerful as a Spartan, so taking away some of those things helped us achieve that goal," said Lars Bakken, Multiplayer Designer at Bungie. Although he's not as sharp or well-equipped as the Chief, that's not to say there's some compensation, such as a visor: "The visor is extremely effective, just because of its target acquisition mode, where you can see the enemies ringed in red, which is super helpful. You can see them long before they see you."
As you'll be exploring the city in pitch-black darkness, the visor becomes essential in highlighting enemies, friendlies and items with different colours. The structure of the campaign is entirely different, with no linear levels to follow, just an expansive, destroyed and deserted city with scattered clues to your squad's disappearance. Aided by an AI construct called the Superintendent, points of interest to investigate are plotted on the visor. As you are more vulnerable than ever before, rushing at Covenant sentries posted at every corner will get you killed. Sneaking and pulling off headshots with the silenced weapons, including a super-satisfying zoomed pistol that can fire as fast as you can pull the trigger, pays dividends.
The clues you'll discover are flashback mechanisms, allowing you to play as the squadmates on their last known missions in the city, providing more information of what happened to them. One clue was a bomb detonator, which plants you in the shoes of an ODST called Dutch. His mission is to set charges on a bridge while weaving between Covenant bombing raids, before climbing a tower and blowing the place to smithereens. "Some of them are on the same length as a Halo 3 mission, some of them are shorter, it just depends on the flashback itself," said Bakken.
They provide a welcome change from the tactical, slow-paced exploration of the city, and play more like the linear campaign missions from earlier Halo games. A big difference is that they can be tackled in any order: "Originally when we were developing the game we would just drop you in," explained Bakken, "with the entire city open to you, but we found that was way too much for people. Now in the game in the beginning you start on a more narrow path, play the first couple missions in the same order, then we open up the city and you play as you see fit."
The expansive city promises to house more than just clues, with Bakken teasing lots of other things to occupy your time. "The city of New Mombasa is really big. People are going to spend a lot of time in that city because there are things in there that we can't talking about yet." Bungie is keeping tight-lipped about its secrets - we do know that achievements will come into it - and about the number of flashbacks. Without exploration, Bakken said "it might be a little shorter than Halo 3" when played from start to finish, but with four-player co-op, campaign scoring and skulls, not to mention those extra-curricular activities we aren't privy to, it should make for Halo's most interesting campaigns to date.
OXCGN:- So Curtis, a quick question: Will Halo 3: ODST Legendary Difficulty return back to the glory days of Halo: Combat Evolved’s Legendary Difficulty or will it stay as simplified as Halo 3’s catering to a broader audience?
Curtis Creamer:- Ahh you know that is actually a very good question that you’ve asked, and to answer that I would have to say that depending on your skill level that ODST ’s Legendary has gone back to the glory days.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment
