    Re: Valkyria Chronicles

Just wanted to share a couple of the entertaining moments I've had with this game, one spoiler'd (just general stage info, no plot details), and one not:

Most heroic moment: Chapter 10 (first mission)

    Spoiler

"I'd rather kill you myself and save the Imps the trouble" moment:

I had brought about 3 units out into the open to try and kill off a sniper and stay out of range of other enemy fire at the same time. The sniper was down to single digit health, where one more hit would kill. With my last command point I go with a scout for the accurate shot - which just happened to be Susie. With the aiming circle over the entire enemy, I fire. Or try to, at least. Imagine the shock when I hear Susie's voice:

    "No, I can't do it!"

Potential - Humanitarian. Description: "Unable to forgive themselves for harming another person, they cannot take any further action after attacking." Except it triggered before she shot, which means the turn ended without a shot being fired.

I then watch aghast as the sniper proceeds to take down 2 of the 3 I left in the open (thinking he'd surely be dead). Fortunately the third is able to evac the other two, and I eventually complete the mission.

Immediately following this mission I sent Susie on her way, and her parting message was something to the effect of "I'm glad my time in combat is over". Take up the medic job or something - that regular one is bound to get shot eventually with running into killzones the way she does!

Hey, Fina can do whatever she can, it's bad battle etiquette to shoot a medic anyways.

I know which one you're talking about.

      Spoiler

I just got through Ch. 15 and 16, and I almost lost Hannes in one of the battles because someone decided to move somewhere where I didn't expect he/she to move. Fortunately he/she decided it was more important to get to that place instead of putting away Hannes for good.

Just beat it last night. Total game time of around 46 hours, but it would appear that there's still plenty to do after beating it.

I'll hold off on the spoiler talk until more have beaten it, though.

(Love the mid-battle save feature, btw - saved me from a lot of headaches on the longer battles late in the game)

The grades are only based on how quickly you get through the missions, and nothing else. So if you get through them quickly, yes, you'll probably get an A. But, you do get extra experience and money for destroying tanks, killing enemy leaders (command point guys), and enemy aces (they all have special names), so it's not always best to run straight for the enemy's camp. Not to mention that attempting to do so is more or less suicide on the later missions.

It's possible to get through the first skirmish on normal in a single turn (quite easy actually, once your characters are leveled up).

The mission I was talking about was about a princess. That is all I will say outside a Spoiler Tag.

Same here. I actually only used the mid-battle save feature if I was unsure of how to achieve the objective and that I didn't want to restart from the beginning.

Never run into the open unless you need to. You dont know when reinforcments will come. Pay attention to who is doing good and who isn't. For example, If I find that one of my units that usually doesn't do well in my party is actually doing good, try to use him more. Remember that you can also use a unit more than one time per turn, I didn't know that when I first played and was getting my arse handed to me. Also do skermishes and such and try to get all upgrades that become availiable at that time from the R&D facility, etc.

                              Which chapter are you on?

"When in doubt, go with Shocktroopers" is the best advice I can give early on in the game. Some of the other classes don't get more useful until later in the game, but shocktroopers are pretty useful throughout. Often times you can run them right through a hailstorm of interception fire right up to an enemy, and blow them away. That gets more difficult when they group up and you face two or three of them, but it works for awhile at least.

Oh....and don't try to headshot crouching enemies - you can't. Crouching negates extra damage from headshots, even if they're not actually behind a sandbag. But it works the same way for your guys too - that's certainly one thing I wish I had realized sooner. That's why this game isn't a third person shooter - stuff like this.
