Re: Red Dead Redemption
To those who keep saying if u got tired of GTA you'll get tired of this is not true at all. While the gameplay mechanic is the same, it is being played in a completely different setting while performing completely different tasks.
Maybe stealing a car and taking it back to your safe house wasn't appealing to some, but those same people could love stealing a horse and unloading your 6 shooter on some bandits while u do it.
The fact this is gta set in the west is what's appealing to me & I'm not a big gta fan @ all.Comment

Re: Red Dead Redemption
I wonder how much damage your horse can take and do you have to feed it to heal it etc?
EDIT: as for the whole is this GTA on horseback debate i don't see how you could make a sandbox not be very similar? Nearly all sandbox games even from other developers look pretty similar, the difference with Rockstar is the attention to detail and excellent story telling. I already know i'm going to LOVE this game.
Godfather, Mafia, Just Cause, etc and so on are no where near the detail that is in a GTA title. Just watching those videos, the animation, the movements, the way the game plays, etc, it's all GTA.
The fact I'm comparing this to GTA is not a knock at any point. There were just a lot of posters early on who stated they didn't like GTA but knew they'd love this game. That's where my posts are coming from.Comment

Re: Red Dead Redemption
Except that what EG was meaning to say was that this IS GTA set in the old west... And essentially it is. Is it refined and improved? Of course. But a minute into that video, had I never heard of this game or who made it, I could have told you the developer in an instant.
And it's not a knock either, I'm freaking PSYCHED for this. But if someone is going into this hoping for something totally different from GTA... well prepare to be disappointed.

Re: Red Dead Redemption
I agree and disagree with the GTA comparisons. There's no doubt with the general "engine" or gameplay it's similar. I got tired of GTA only because of the setting. It was always pretty much the same.
This game feels more open, and let's face it we haven't had any good Western style games. From what I read it also has some Oblivion/Morrowind/Fallout 3 flavor it seems to it. And I put around 100 hours each into those games.
I have no worries about not loving this game or burning out on it too quickly. And if I do, no biggie, it's Gamefly'ed.PSN: JISTIC_OS

Re: Red Dead Redemption
Then what is it? Certainly looks like GTA to me. Even the overlay's look the same.
Sure, there are advancements and improvements, but it's the GTA formula, you're kidding yourself if you think differently.
As I said long before, the people who hated GTA, or got bored with it, will be back here a few days after release saying how disappointed they are.
I loved GTA IV, so I'm fully ready for the game and what it's going to be. It's not a knock on the game, it's just what Rockstar does.
I'm just hoping that there is going to be enough in-between stuff to fill up the world. In which so far, sounds promising. I am most looking forward to what they do with the Good/Evil part of the game. I like that they talk about you over the camp fire and stuff. I want your reputation to play out in the world.Comment

I don't agree. The Major difference here is that things that matter are actually happening in a way that seems independent to you the player. That's what great games like oblivion did and it makes games 20X better IMO. In all of these previews you hear about people screaming for your help...hearing gunshots near by among other things where you can intervene , some may lead to a mission some are AMBUSHES which are APART from quests. Even the wild animals add to all of this, plus the economy of buying and selling is huge too.
This is why I grew tired of GTA. I HAD to initiate everything, instigate everything. I'm in a sandbox with a character in a fully detailed world, yet nothing happens unless I do something.
How cool would it have been in gta4 if every once in a while some thugs tried to mug you. Or later if assassins were randomly sent to kill you. How about people in distress screaming in the street for help. Or a bookie coming up to you asking you to collect from someone...and so on.
This type of thing seems to be going on in RDR which will make it worlds better and completely alter the experience of playing it. It gives a certain unpredictability to the game and added excitement. It also lessens the 'i am god' feeling which cheapens the experience to me.
I remember feeling this in oblivion when someone came up and talked to me telling me to go find the grey fox and thinking - wow, such a huge world and so many characters in it and they were still able to have npc's come up to me and make things happen!
It just makes the whole thing much more interactive. If anything cool that happens is only a direct result of my doing, at times playing the game can seem like a chore.
As I said they seemed to have caught on to this. You can even see posts of me complaining about this very thing when I grew tired of GTA4 in that thread because I knew exactly why I was being put off. I think a lot of people feel the same way and either never put their finger on exactly why, or they read this and are nodding their heads because they know this to be true for them.Liquor in the front, poker in the rear.Comment
