    Re: Max Payne 3

    EDGE details
    • McCaffrey is returning, plus he gets to full on act with the other actors, like in Uncharted mocap sessions.
    • Vancouver, London, Toronto, and New England R* studios are all cooperating on this title.
    • Max is working for some guy named Rodrigo Branco in Sao Paulo, and for his two brothers, a politician and a "party-loving dropout".
    • The story will be a bit non-linear, description of Max in Brazil with a full head of hair at a money drop for a kidnapping. Seems the story will go back and forward in time, possibly in New York, his early time in Brazil, and him in the gutter, bald later on.
    • In the stadium/kidnapping mission, Max is partnered with a guy named Passos.
    • The comic style panels return, sorta. Here's how it's described: Now instead of comic book frames, these dramatic plot pointers use the in-game engine and show an animated collage of action footage, similar to 24.
    • Multiple set piece encounters, including a Mona-style sniper rifle escort bit.
    • They did a lot of Mocap for this game. Lots of animations and stuff, apparently looks quite impressive.
    • Uses Euphoria. Very natural animations for Max and his enemies.
    • Bullet time is charged by killing enemies. BT is very detailed.
    • Max can hold three single handed weapons at once and dual wield two different weapons at the same time.
    • Pop out and shoot cover mechanic as well besides BT and Shoot-dodge.
    • Wheel-based weapon selection system.
    • Inner Circle may return - some plot threads from previous games work their way into this sequel. Max has been expelled from NYC.

Finally some new info. Thanks Flawless.

Still not a fan of the Brazil thing, but at the same time I'm still looking forward to this.

      I'm guessing Holiday 2011 release?

Sounds interesting, but I wonder...Will I be able to watch MP-3 gameplay videos 8 years after release - and still think that the graphics/phyiscs/atmoshere/story are awesome?

I guess we'll have to wait and see...

          Re: Max Payne 3

          EDGE Preview Online

And in Rockstar’s demo room we get the first indication that, actually, Max Payne 3 isn’t just going to kick off eight years down the line. We’re here to see one of the earliest missions in the game: Rodrigo Branco’s trophy wife has been kidnapped by the Commando Sombre street gang, and there’s a huge ransom on her head. The Branco brothers merely want Payne to make the money drop and get her back safely. But the Payne we see onscreen has a full head of hair, and isn’t the booze-soaked hulk we’d been led to expect. Apparently, we’re going to get a glimpse of the intervening years between New York Max and the dishevelled alcoholic he has become – although Nelson teasingly suggests it might not necessarily be in sequence. “We’re always playing with time in the story,” he explains. “We move backwards and forwards; we use really aggressive editing. It’s unlike anything we’ve done in any of our games before.”...

Importantly, what Max Payne 3 doesn’t feel like is a standard corridor shooter with identikit bad guys spawning endlessly out of open doorways. Each encounter we experience feels specifically staged and works within the context of the environment and the story. And it turns out this might be where a big chunk of the development schedule has gone. “We’ve spent a lot of time tweaking these mechanics,” says Nelson. “It’s a linear game, so it needs to be dense. Every aspect has to be perfect. We’re shooting more motion capture than we have in the past. And the action never really stops, it never lets you go. You’re walking in and out of these cutscenes, these panel sequences; the section with the sniper rifle – we had to mo-cap all of those sequences. It’s all performance-led, so it looks believable. And it really comes alive. When you’re looking through that scope, you’re really watching your buddy – you want to take care of him. It took a lot of time to co-ordinate and get that stuff shot.”

Contrasting with all of this carefully choreographed scene creation is the fluidity and realism of the physical interactions. Fights are fraught, fast and brutal, as you’d expect. But now bullet-time – charged by killing enemies, as ever – has a layer of beauty to match its gameplay impact. As with RDR, the level of graphical detail on offer delivers astonishing action moments – glass smashes, blood spurts, furniture collapses – but here it’s fragmented and slowed to show off the fine physical elements. Bullet-cam is also back with an increased role, this time providing a bloody full-stop to every encounter, so players know they can progress. In between, it’s all rapid gunfire, some seemingly intelligent group movement from the enemies, and plenty of context-sensitive animations.

              Story Overview:

Max Payne 3 is set eight years after the events of the last instalment. No longer a cop, Max is close to washed-up, drunk and addicted to painkillers. Without a job on the force, Max has left the greater New York area, and he finds himself in Sao Paulo, Brazil, working in the burgeoning field of private security. Max's latest assignment sees him protecting the family of Rodrigo Branco, a wealthy real estate mogul and his two brothers: Victor, a local politician and the youngest, Marcello, a party-loving Eurotrash playboy, along with Fabiana Branco, Rodrigo's trophy wife, and Giovanna, Fabiana's sister. The story of Max's descent from vengeful, leather-jacket wearing detective roaming the alleys of New York to the broken, shaven-headed man out for justice on unfamiliar streets far from home is at the center of Max Payne 3.

              Features:
              • The combination of Natural Motion's Euphoria character behavior system and Bullet Time adds a new level to Max's classic shoot-dodge moves. Shoot-dodge is not a canned animation, but a natural interaction with the environment, as Max will reach out to the floor as he dives, and naturally respond to objects in his way if you attempt to dive into a wall or obstacle.
              • This marriage of slow-motion gunplay and Euphoria physics amplifies the cinematic action of Max Payne 3 significantly, and enemies will also respond realistically to each bullet fired.
              • Max Payne 3 extends the concept of Bullet-Time to now include game areas of the game that will trigger set pieces involving Bullet-Time. These provide **** moments of action that allow Max to take out enemies in a new interpretation of Max Payne's signature style.
              • Bullet-Cams return: in keeping with the stylish gunplay for which Max is known, Bullet-Cams deliver players a reward for downing enemies with a satisfying final kill.
              • Max Payne 3 takes the graphic novel panels of the earlier games and evolves them by utilizing in-game assets to create a motion comic-style approach.
              • James McCaffrey, the original voice of Max, is back. Not only as the voice of max, but Max's appearance, face and many of his movements in Max Payne 3 are all captured directly from James himself.
              • Max Payne 3 features an integrated cover system. Cover adds an extra strategic element to the classic shoot-dodge/bullet-time/ run-and-gun mechanics of Max Payne, providing players with new options in any given situation.
              • Tremendous detail has been paid to every facet of Max Payne 3: Bullets destroy nearly everything in the environment, sweat will appear on Max's face and shirt as the heat of battle wears on, and blood soaks the clothing of his enemies. You'll also notice the minute details of the weapons themselves: hammers **** back, slides move, shells expel from the chamber and literally hundreds more.
              • Partners and sidekicks will play a large role in Max Payne 3. Hundreds of hours of custom motion-capture were done for individual characters, making traditional in-game encounters completely unique, such as enemies sweeping a room or simply the way Max's partners will behave as they move through the game.

                        March 2012 Release

Today, we're proud to announce that Max Payne 3 - the new dark, gritty action experience that continues the tale of former New York City detective Max Payne and is sure to satisfy both newcomers and veterans to the historic franchise alike - is expected to launch on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC in March 2012 in North America and Europe.

Still haunted by the memories of his traumatic past, Max begins a new life working private security protecting a wealthy industrialist and his family in Sao Paulo, Brazil. When gangs target the family under his protection, Max is forced to fight to save his clients and clear his name, in a bid to, once and for all, rid himself of the demons that have tortured him for far too long.

A true cross-studio collaboration between Rockstar Games’ global development teams that picks up from where series creator Remedy Entertainment's Max Payne 2 left off, Max Payne 3 utilizes cutting edge technology for a seamless, cinematic action experience, incorporating the latest advances in Natural Motion physics as well as a brand new iteration of the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine, resulting in highly-refined gameplay with an extensive range of realistic weaponry, an intelligent cover system and sophisticated Bullet-Time mechanics.

In addition to an expansive single-player campaign, Max Payne 3 will also be the first entry in the series to introduce a thorough and engrossing multiplayer experience. In a unique twist, Max Payne 3 multiplayer delivers a compelling experience that dynamically alters maps and mode progression for all players in a match. Along with traditional multiplayer modes, Max Payne 3 will also include a deep reward and leveling system, persistent clans and multiple strategic load-out options.

It's about time they added a cover system.. A cover system combined with what the series has always been and I don't see how this won't be one of the best releases of '12
