Madden 2005 on the Xbox. It had the fair play setting on so you rarely got some cheese head. I think I played about 200 games online. I wish they would bring back that setting.

Counter-Strike and Unreal Tournament on the PC.

We got a PC with broadband internet for the first time in 1999, and I played the hell out of those games for many years until everybody finally moved on to Counter-Strike: Source and Unreal Tournament 2004, neither of which I could run on my CPU.

Only two games I've ever played at a high enough level to compete in clan ladders.

Good times for sure.

NFL2K1 for the Dreamcast, over a phone line. I remember everyone being on the honor system in terms of keeping rankings using DRICAS. Back then thought it was amazing to be able to play friends from the comfort of home. Rarely play online now, but those were good times

They were good times. NFL 2K1 was my first online console experience.

Before that I had a PC and Team Fortress was my first online experience. When i learned that the DC would have online functionality, I left my PC behind.

I remember playing over Netzero for free NBA 2k1. We would meet at certain times for games and you would have different lobbies that would show up to but you couldn't find the lobbies all the time even if the other person you were playing that night would say he's waiting in the lobby. The other one for me was RB6 3. I remember playing co-op running thru the tunnels and dying alot. Good times!!!

Wow, I remember a lot of the different references mentioned here like Killer Instinct over Xband, NBA Live leagues on my PC (late 90s), XBL beta testing (I still have the orange memory card given to testers), etc. But the games that truly got me hooked on online gaming were Return to Castle Wolfenstein on Xbox and SOCOM on PS2. I didn't get into RTCW right away, so I got into both games around the same time (when SOCOM came out). I logged in way too many hours between the two of them. I still have a special place in my heart for the RTCW single player campaign (that did not allow you to save, and took me 12 hours to finish).

Online leagues are interesting to me. Of course, scheduling and keeping interest is always the challenge, but when the Dreamcast and Xbox offered online capability I was in some very active leagues. We once ran two 32 team seasons without many issues. I think it was towards the end of the first Xbox's days that things got rough. Personalities and scheduling were a very difficult challenge.

Now I have about 8 friends that run leagues, but nothing the size of what has been before.
