I echo this. GTA IV was a large disappointment although the driving engine was superb. It was just the laggy controls with the euphoria engine that I think make the game a chore to play for me. It definitely was lacking the fun factor that the previous two GTAs had.

San Andreas had the biggest fun factor of the series.

I think the 1st 3/4s of the game the missions simply weren't that challenging.

But the 2000's came along, the EA's and the Activisions of the world came in and bought these companies up and more often than not, they simplified the game to reach a broader audience and it usually failed.

So today we have a limited number of gaming companies, that no longer push the envelope. Everything we get has to appeal to a large audience so gone are the days of Sim City, Civilization, Flight Simulators, etc etc.

This is easily the biggest Disappointment imo, I still play Civilization 4 and Sim City4, both are about 5 years old and are still fun to this day.Civ 4 was a intellectual game that actually required intelligence to play it, then i caught a whiff of the future when they ported Civ to the consoles.Truly Original games are gone folks, I hope you do not mind playing Call of Duty 11 in 10 years.
            +1

I agree with this wholeheartedly, in the 90s I almost exclusively played simulators and strategy games. Now everything is hyper/post-hyper-commercialized to where its all about turning out a profit. Think about all the games released within a year then think about how many of them are actually good out of the box. I miss the old days.

Halo 3 for me...I know I'm in the minority, but it just felt like Halo 2.5

I know they added a bunch of cool online features, just didn't feel they really upgraded the graphics or other aspects enough, compared to what other games have done when going to next gen.

Re: Biggest Disappointments of the Decade

Just going to comment on a few:

GTA IV - I think it's great (one of my favorite games of all-time), but it was my first GTA experience, so I guess I wasn't set up to be disappointed.

Halo 3 - While the story was much, much better than Halo 2, the multiplayer didn't appeal to me as much as COD4.

Madden on next gen was a disappointment until Madden 10.

I also agree exclusive sports licensing was a big downer for gamers. The lack of competition definitely affected the quality of the games.

Good point. I miss those niche games.

Man, some of you guys are crazy though... GTA IV and Fallout 3 as some of the biggest disappointments of the last 10 years? I must not have played the same version as you, because those games were great.

Here's some from mostly the latter part of the decade:

                    • EA getting an exclusive license with the NFL and NCAA Football
                    • 2K purchasing the MLB third-party exclusive license, killing MVP Baseball series
                    • All the MLB 2K games after 2K7
                    • High Heat and Inside Drive fading into oblivion
                    • The 360 console being a piece of junk in terms of hardware reliability
                    • 99% of Wii games being shovelware
                    • College Hoops series dying after 2K8
                    • Call Of Duty WAW

Let me chime in with a few off my list.
First off Too Human. I was soo stoked for this one to be let down. Next up is the smackdown vs raw series. What happened there was just sad. Can't forget the death of nfl2k as well as madden 06-09.

Re: Biggest Disappointments of the Decade

                        Disappointments:
Demise of Acclaim/All-Star Baseball (2004): Certainly disappointing to see the only baseball game that had expansion and during its time a deep franchise mode. It certainly was buggy, but during the earlier part of this decade I enjoyed the ASB series since picking up ASB 2002. It wasn't so much that I didn't like the other games that were out there, I picked ASB first and stuck with the series until Acclaim shutdown. However, MLB The Show has more than eased this disappointment for me.

Gran Turismo: After pumping out two awesome titles in the late 90's with GT1 and GT2 (1997 and 1999 respectively I believe). In my personal opinion, while the series remained good with its third and fourth installments, GT2 still remains the best out of the four games. My disappointment comes from the fact it feels like GT4 came out decades ago and that the PS3 has been out for a few years and GT5 has yet to drop. I envy XBOX 360 users with Forza.

Simcity Societies: What the hell EA? Personally I haven't tried this game for myself, but after playing Simcity 4, I ask myself, that very question. First off, they bastardized the series back letting another company develop it. Second, it was simplified and "regressed". Hell, Simcity 4 was alright, but fan-made stuff made it even more enjoyable.

Civilization Revolution: Fun game, no doubt. But again, it was simplified and short. The last Civ. game I played was Civ. II and I played the crap out of that. I think this game probably could've been better, it just felt like it was missing some aspects that made Civilization into what it was in my opinion.

Blizzard: How you might ask? Well, personal preference. Enough with WOW, get SC2 and Diablo 3 out already!

Clover (Makers of Viewtiful Joe, Okami, and God Hand) Shutting Down: Very disappointing in my opinion after the products this studio developed.

Nah, you're not alone. Halo was extremely boring for me as well, on and offline. Too repetitive.

Now here's one to fire up the fanboys...Modern Warfare 2. The story was boring, too many slow-mo death scenes and mumbled plot points I couldn't pick up over the chaos, not to mention how preposterous it all was.

And the online, outside of private matches with friends, is terrible. I don't have the time to master every gun, perk, map, etc. so I get simply owned and blindly killed by all these punk *** racist, homophobic, and sexist kids. I'm at Level 29 and likely won't get much past that until the day comes that I sell it. The deathstreaks aren't all that helpful either.

My sentiment's exactly. Don't even get me started on RRoD's....

And as far as sports games, I think that I may just be outgrowing them at this point. Mainly because none of them will hold my interest for over a couple of week's and I don't really see that changing anytime soon.

                            I hope I'm wrong.

                                From most to least disappointing:

                                DLC-**** you game industry

MGS4-No gameplay and terrible story. It's a shame since 1 and 3 are 2 of, if not my two, favorite games of all time.

Companies deciding that consoles are PCs and shipping broken games that require patches

Next Gen NCAA and Madden-Nothing needs to be said

Halo 2 and 3-Didn't live up to Halo 1

GTA4-Great game, but after every review touted it as the best ever, I had my hopes a bit too high

No worthwhile Blizzard games in the 2000s

Star Wars KOTOR and Force Unleashed-Both were good, but I want a truly great Star Wars game

Only 3 open world Bethesda games
