Often times you can find Pre-Order deals through the steam store or elsewhere though that can knock the price down.

Every time a new Civilization is released, Firaxis finds a way to take my money at least once a quarter for DLCs. Guess I'll go ahead and set another $30 aside...

steam also had it for free weekend where you could play it for free for a few days. I downloaded it and tried to play it, but it doesn't seem to be a very stable game as it ended up crashing all the time. I think I was able to get to about turn 40 or something before I gave up after playing around with all the settings trying to find the issue.

Plus all of the CIV games are 75% off until monday at 10 am. I got Gods and Kings for 7.50, Civ IV complete for 7.50 and CIV III Complete for 1.99.

While all of the known features make the expansion worth it, especially for players that favour cultural/diplomatic victories like me, they also improved the wartime AI by a lot, which makes the game a lot tougher, in a good way.
