KoA isn't being turned into an MMO, it is a title using the same IP as an MMO already being developed.

My 'snarky comment' is accurate, would love a link to this study about single player games being more popular, wonder how many years old it is because surely it isn't recent.

Some of the greatest games ever have been single player games. Fallout 3, Skyrim, KOA, Mass Effect (Before 3), God of War(s), Batman, etc.. Multiplayer is a way for developers to expand life span on a game.

You get games like CoD 4 who redefine the multiplayer experience but then use that to thier advantage and keep coming out with the same thing every year and get lazy. (WaW, mw2, blops, MW3, etc)

You are right though, unfortunately Multiplayer is most companies main focus. Lets just hope games like Skyrim and KOA keep it a single player focus. Tired of developers developing games with a multiplayer first mind set.

Multiplayer is a double edge sword.

In one way its great to get online with your friends and have fun testing wits against humans instead of AI.

In the other it has almost totally destroyed the single player aspect of games from story to length.

Yep, I should have linked to the study but I have no idea where I read it. Probably a poll of geriatric gamers such as myself whose slower twitch skills and limited gaming time leads us to prefer single player experiences.

Bethesda has been experimenting with a multiplayer aspect for TES for the past year or two at least. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if it's something we'll see anytime soon given the long development cycles of games like Skyrim and Oblivion (literally years in the making.)

Their focus always has been single player.. with rich lore and story lines, but a co-op or party based experience with their engine would be incredible imo.

The thing with MMO's like WoW, is it has grown to such a huge user base because people who don't normally play a lot of video games can really get hooked on them. I'm talking about stay-at-home mothers who have children and such... It's crazy how many untypical "gamers" who don't care about games like CoD or Madden really eat up the MMO's.

Don't need a link, just look at the GotY awards the last 2 years (deserved or not).

              2011
              Arkham City - No multiplayer.
              Skyrim - No multiplayer.
              Skyward Sword - No multiplayer.
              DX:HR - No multiplayer.
              L.A. Noire - No multiplayer.
              Portal 2 - Co-op only.
              Uncharted 3 - Insignificant multiplayer.
The Witcher 2 - No multiplayer.

              2010
Mass Effect 2 - No multiplayer.
Red Dead Redemption - Insignificant multiplayer.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Insignificant multiplayer/no online.
              Starcraft 2 - Well that's one.
God of War 3 - No multiplayer.
              Heavy Rain - No multiplayer.
              Bayonetta - No multiplayer.
              Deadly Premonition - No multiplayer.

Plus the current top reviewed game for this year so far is Xenoblade Chronicles which has? No multiplayer. Also has too many reviews for a game that isn't out for another month.

GOTY only has so much to do with popularity, the weekly most played games on XBox live and WoW's 10m current players are a pretty easy rebuttal to that list.

Xenoblade Chronicles is fun. Game HAS been out for a while, not just stateside.

And yes MMOs might be super popular now, but WoW isn't at 10m subs for normal people playing.

I also think we've seen the peak of popularity for a single MMO in these days but that's a different discussion for another day.

MMOs are my bread and butter of gaming.

Just as a FYI since I had expressed my disappointment with the story..I have begun doing one quest line at a time...trying to do a few at a time was too much story wise. Sometimes I will do a run of kill this, fetch that if they are in the same place, but sticking with the House of Ballads line has helped the story make more sense, become interesting and add some cohesiveness to the game.

I think the lore and story are solid, but it's all mostly presented in an obtuse way.

                        Re: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

Sure but they're the highest praised games.
XBL list? The most played games online are online games? Shocker!
But that of course excludes anywhere between 40 to 60 percent of people.

Find in-depth gaming news and hands-on reviews of the latest video games, video consoles and accessories.

So that says there's about 35 million XBL users in August with no indication of how many are gold and how many silver and last they heard in Novemeber 2010 there were 12 million with gold.

                        According to here: http://www.vgchartz.com/
                        There's been about 65 million 360's sold.

I don't know how many they sold since August but it looks to me that's about 20 million people that haven't taken their 360 online at all and another 10-20 million that don't actually play online. (Which is another reason online pass stuff is stupid especially for a single player game like this.)

There are 5 Live accounts in my household, and I rarely play online games but am always online... which is why things like Skyrim, Batman, and Madden are on the Live Activity list. Still the most played games on live are the last couple Call of Dutys, the highest grossing launches in history, greater than any movie everyday even. Something no single player game will ever likely be able to rival.

I see you did nothing to rebut the 10m subbing to WoW currently either.

Critical acclaim (ie GOTY awards) don't make games automatically preferred or even most played.

I will pick ME 3 up on Tuesday, but I will probably keep in the plastic until the weekend. I think I have another 10-20 hours left to reach a satisfied conclusion to this game. That will put me over 100 hours total.

I'm glad that I have literally not read or watched one article or vid on ME 3, because even though I think it has a very strong chance to be the G.O.A.T, I'm not super jonesing for it due to my complete information blackout of the game.

Finally finished this up today. For me, a better game than Skyrim, and tied with Chrono Cross as the fifth best game I've ever played. Any other time I would say that this is a lock for my Game of the Year, but of course the game I'm about to start next is may take that crown, and has the potential for G.O.A.T. status.

On now to Mass Effect 3.
