      Re: BioShock Infinite

Just beat the game. My initial reaction to the final act of the game is probably summed up best with 2 words: holy ****.

The game itself was pretty good. I feel like near the middle of the game things started to feel a little repetitive because it was mostly just walk here, shoot a bunch of guys, rinse and repeat. But once the story picked back up near the end, I was fully into it.

There was more than one occasion in the last 1-2 hours of the game where my jaw kind of dropped because things just started to take really crazy turns. For someone like me who typically isn't very good at following detailed stories like this, I only grasped the barest of the ending but reading through the IGN Wiki cleared things up for me, and wow, someone has quite the imagination lol.

Honestly, I can't remember the last time a video game has had a story like this. I almost feel like some of the best parts of the game were where you couldn't use your guns or vigors and were just watching certain things unfold because it was just that interesting. Really it felt like a movie. The funny thing is Inception was one of the first things that popped into my head when you're at the lighthouses.

This game definitely raised the bar for story-telling in video games IMO. Just trying to fathom how someone could come up with some of this almost ****s with my head as much as the story. Great game and I'm glad I went ahead and picked this up. This is definitely a gaming experience I'll remember.

I think there's a fair amount of differences between the trailer/gameplay preview released a few years ago and the final product. I think the scene you mentioned was one that was altered and did not make the cut.

Bought this game, made it to the parts where you start shooting, turned it off and sold it.

Not so much a slight for the game, but I just can't get into FPS anymore.

With respect, may I ask how you came to the conclusion that buying this game would be a good idea knowing you were not a fan of first person shooters? Was it an impulse buy based upon hype? An expectation that this first person shooter would be different than the rest? A little bit of both?

Finished. All I have to say is ... uh, what just happened?

Wow. I mean, I get it, but I sort of don't. Definitely going to have to play through again to see what pieces of the story I missed. And while I thought I was being pretty thorough as far as finding stuff, I missed about 25 voxophones and a bunch of infusions. Also kind of ticked that I missed Shiny Happy People.

Anyway, off to read the spoilers to try to figure it all out. Amazing game.

I heard so many good things and was looking for a new game. Was between this and Tomb Raider. Made decision in store.

After getting a the fire ball Vigor and then starting the combat I knew I would never finish it. This also happened with FarCry3 which everyone almost universally loved.

I think it just solidified my belief that I am done with FPS's. I don't like not getting in cover, and everything seems so....non tactical.

I have been playing a ton of strategy and old school 4x games, so i think that is where my gaming is heading for me.

I feel that. Infinite actually had the opposite effect on me. I cannot recall the last first person shooter I've played and I definitely can't recall the last sci-fi game I played, so I was very tentative about this game. Had my brothers not purchased it, I never would have given it a chance.

That said, things worked out wonderfully for me. I was transfixed by the atmosphere and the ability to wander, discover, and experience. To be honest, I was kind of bummed when the action began as well. I sort of just wanted to continue going on with my life and discovering things without issue. But I mean, I knew the gunning was bound to start up at some point, so it was just a matter of re-acclimating myself to my experience and soon enough, I was wrapped right back up into a wonderful story.

But I mean, truly, I can still see how this might not be a game for everyone, particularly if they're not fans of first person shooters. On the other hand, it did a great job of transforming me.

                            Re: BioShock Infinite

Some thoughts now after finishing the game.

                            Non-spoilers:
I'm primarily a sports gamer, so take this with a grain of salt (pun intended) but I'm pretty sure this is the first game I've finished since Final Fantasy VII on the PS1. And I rank BI right up there with it as the best non-sports game I've ever played. You know a game is good when you're still thinking about it the next day. Thanksully, it's been a slow day at work so I've had time to read some of the theories, spoilers, etc.

The atmosphere and graphics during the opening scenes and again during the closing scenes are the best I've ever seen in a game. And what's in between isn't too shabby either.

Though it's obviously a FPS, it really felt more like a FPS/RPG hybrid to me. But count me among those who were a bit disappointed when battles broke out. I really enjoyed just exploring Columbia. Speaking of battles, I played on easy because I really wanted the game to be about the story on my first walk through, but I still had some challenges. There were several times where I ran out of salts/ammo and had to just straight up melee bad guys before running and hiding to recharge my shield. I'm going to play on normal the second time around. Not looking forward to 1999 mode when that time comes.

I didn't really use the sky-line much and I didn't start using my vigors until later. I basically stuck with the carbine and sniper rifle. But I had a lot of fun picking guys off with the sniper rifle. Going to have to branch out more the next time around.

As mentioned before, I thought the characters were really well done too. I hope Elizabeth makes an appearance in the DLC.
                            Spoiler

                            OK, on to the ending:

For those who've played the original Bioshock, is the first game tougher? I've reached a Neptune level (I think level 2) and I feel as though I've died wayyyy more than I had in Infinite at that point. Any strategies or suggestions for a guy who's only played Infinite up to this point? I seem to be having a little difficulty adjusting.

By far. IMO bioshock needed a more cerebral approach to combat and advancement. Infinite was just a mayhem shooter.
