    Announcing 1999 Mode

Back in December, there was a survey from us here at Irrational to better understand how you play games. We had a hunch about a new feature for BioShock Infinite, and we built this survey to see if it’s something that our fans wanted. The results of the survey are in and we heard what you want loud and clear, which is why we’re proud to announce something new for the game: 1999 Mode!

BioShock Infinite’s 1999 Mode will feature an especially demanding gaming experience, forcing you to examine your decisions while going through your adventure in Columbia. With every choice you make, there are irreversible implications, and if your choices guide you down a path not suited to your play style, you will suffer for it.

It’s not simply a matter of adjusting the difficulty sliders in the game – the team went much further than that. Resource planning? If you’re to survive this mode, proper planning will be crucial. Combat specializations? You’ll need to develop them efficiently and effectively throughout the story; any weapon will be useless to you unless you have that specialization. Combat? You will need to carefully target every shot, and your health will be set to an entirely different baseline. Game saves? Well, yes, there will be those, but according to Irrational Games Creative Director Ken Levine “there are game saves, and you’re gonna f***ing need them.”

“We want to give our oldest and most committed fans an option to go back to our roots,” said Levine. “In 1999 Mode, gamers face more of the permanent consequences of their gameplay decisions. In BioShock Infinite, gamers will have to sweat out the results of their actions. In addition, 1999 Mode will demand that players pick specializations, and focus on them.”

Any System Shock fans excited about that? Never played either of those games but I hear they were tense and incredibly difficult, so if this game is anything like I know I'm not playing on that mode lol!

System Shock 2 is one of my favorite games of all time, but I will probably only try 1999 mode on a second playthrough. My patience isn't what it used to be.

This just looks incredible, I never played any of the Bioshock's before, but this makes me want to give them a try.

I tell all my friends to go try them because they haven't usually played them before and they are both great games... cheap now too.

System Shock 2 is also my favorite game, the big turning point in that game and the end are pure epic pieces.

Had to look this up since everyone was talking about it... was this a precursor to Bioshock? The game looks awesome!! Looks like it only came out on PC though.

Bioshock Infinite is not a prequal to the original Bioshock and will be out on the PS3 XBOX 360 and PC.

Sorry I didn't make myself clear, I was talking about System Shock & System Shock 2 since others were.

I know, unfortunately, that Bioshock Infinite doesn't have much if anything to do with the first 2

Do they exist in the same universe? Or is it an AU (Alternate Universe) somewhat based on the foundations of the first two?

System Shock and BioShock are not connected in anyway to what I've believed. They are made by familiar people and follow the same system in terms of gameplay and story. Most people I know believe Bioshock is a bad excuse for a game compared to System Shock 2. A fellow YouTuber who past away played both and I'd say if you're interested in the connections. To watch his playlist of Bioshock, he explains it better then I can.

Yea they got Bioshock on Amazon for 13 bucks, It seems people aren't as elated about Bioshock 2, I was gonna get both for cheap on amazon. Should I just get the first one?

Personally, I enjoy the 2nd one because the gameplay is smoother. I did it reverse though, played Bioshock 2 first then went back and played the first. The story would definitely be more interesting if you played them in order.

I'm also in the minority I think of people saying the 2nd one is better, I probably think that bc like I said, I played it first.

I think I'll just get Bioshock and try it out. regardless if I like either one, I find Bioshock 3 looks irresistable. The part with the ziplines was ridiculous, do you have to think sometimes in this game? The zipline part looked incredibly hard, I'm not sure I could have done all those perfect moves to end up on the zeppelin lmao, that was incredible.
