I hope the improvements extend to the multiplayer. The single player looking better was a given. It's the blurring that's the biggest problem for me. It doesn't help that according to Digital Foundry the game's native resolution is 960x704 (25% drop from R2). The resolution was the first thing that jumped out to me as being low and that's something that rarely changes late in development. You add upscaling and QAA (both of which are going to blur the image already) and the amount of camera blur just compounds things. I imagine this will be less noticeable in single player where the effects and vignetting are turned up to 11 -- you generally don't want to go to crazy with that stuff in multiplayer so characters silhouette stand out clearly.
That's too bad. I will wait for some more impressions with the retail then. I will get it some time for sure, but I was going to get it next week if the MP was sharper.

New Resistance 3 trailer is bone chilling

Insomiac Games has released a new trailer in the form of a mini-documentary from the viewpoint of Rex Eastley, a 75 year old Australian man who lost his family during the Chimeran invasion in the 1950s, and went on to survive his terrible ordeal.

You can view the full bone chilling 'documentary' below. Resistance 3 launches on September 5 for the U.S., and everywhere else on September 9.

Picked this up today but still haven't started it yet. Pretty pumped though, about to eat dinner and then I'll pop it in. If anyones online playing multiplayer send me a message, didn't play a ton of resistance 2 online but I think I remember liking it well enough, hopefully this is another step up for it.

Joystiq Review: 4.5 Stars out of 5.

It's just one smart system afloat in a sea of increasingly smart systems; evidence that Insomniac Games' system-launching franchise has finally found its footing as a defining brand for the platform. Resistance 3 isn't just a great game full of marked, inspired improvements over its predecessor -- it's a declaration of intent to become the new heir apparent to the sci-fi shooter throne.

                    Re: Resistance 3

                    IGN: 9.0

Resistance 3 offers the same polished experience as the last two games in the series, only this time the action is more focused and tightly structured. Insomniac clearly wanted to make this game a more harrowing and personal experience, and by focusing its attention on a smaller, more personal story within the invasion, it has succeeded without question. While the big military operations have been replaced by more intimate battles, the sense of scale is as intimidating as ever. This is a surprisingly emotional cinematic roller-coaster of a campaign that never lets up.

Likewise, multiplayer in the game remains of the same high caliber as before. The number of players in its multiplayer modes may have been reduced, but fans should rest assured that the quality of the experience remains first-class. Resistance 3 is a must-buy for PS3 shooter fans.

Love seeing all the positive feedback about the campaign.

                      Gamersyde

A bit like Half Life², or more recently Metro 2033, Resistance 3 also gives you a little time to catch your breath with more atmospheric sequences where action is not key. These sequences are a lot more effective than what the mediocre Homefront tried to achieve, so you can actually sympathize with the survivors, feel their despair and sorrow as their only chance of survival is to stay hidden from the Chimeras and to fight back. Sometimes though, these breaks into the action do not take the form of quiet and peaceful scenes. Indeed, their function is also to keep you on your toes, to build up tension so you stay vigilant, as after all danger lurks around every corner. Never too long or boring, these passages are also completely part of the story, a story which always gives you the incentive to keep playing thanks to the combination of nice cutscenes and varied documents you find here and there (letters, audio recordings, etc).
First excellent surprise of this end of year, Resistance 3 finally manages to become a PS3 exclusive worthy of its counterparts. Even though it is less lengthy than the previous episode's, the campaign mode is, by far, better paced, more spectacular and more exciting to play. It is also built on a crescendo that takes the player on an impressive roller-coaster ride. Mutliplayer and co-op add even more play time to the equation if the single player experience is not enough for you. Truth be told, I haven't had such a blast with a first person shooter in a long while, which is why I strongly advise you to give it a try. After all, Resistance 3 has no trouble besting Killzone 3 and other references of the genre in many departments.
                      Eurogamer - 8

Do you like single-player campaigns? I like single-player campaigns, and on the evidence of Resistance 3, Insomniac Games likes single-player campaigns. At a time when more and more shooters are seeing their story modes shrink in size and importance, used only to introduce the assets you'll be seeing online, the robust solo portion of Resistance 3 is a welcome return to the days when the campaign mode was the main course, not the appetiser.
                      Videogamer - 9

I wasn't especially excited about Resistance 3. On its announcement I figured we'd get yet another competent but ultimately forgettable FPS, but Insomniac has produced one of the biggest surprises of the year. Played alone or with a friend the campaign here is of the highest order, providing an experience that feels different to the competition while managing to finally build on what the series has always had going for it. For me, Resistance 3 is comfortably PlayStation 3's best exclusive FPS.
                      G4 - 5/5

Resistance 3 provides a cohesive and polished triple-a shooter experience. What is most exciting is that Insomniac has decided to be itself. It always felt like they were trying to compete with the big boys by copying them, and that is an unwinnable war. It was Insomniac’s answer to Halo or Call of Duty, rather than Insomniac’s take on the shooter. Resistance 3 is finally confident enough to be itself - and in that way it is something brutal, something whimsical, and ultimately, something special.

Those are some glowing reviews which I did not expect. I was expecting a rating between 7-8 range with the lack of hype for this.

It is so weird this time around for both Gears and Resistance as the commercials/media hype is not what it was for both games previous installments. Almost makes it feel like there is a loss of interest going around. I can't wait to get home tonight and start up the SP campaign, it's sounding to be fantastic. I will miss not having Hale around, but Capelli's story is sounding to be much better which I can connect with more since it revolves around having a family which you must leave them to go off to fight for humanity.

Interesting. Sounds like he got a different game than the rest of the reviewers.

Insomniac's third entry in the series makes it clear that Resistance doesn’t belong amongst the triple-A competition in the genre.

Launching with the PlayStation 3 back in 2006, the original Resistance: Fall of Man signaled that Sony wanted a blockbuster FPS franchise to call its own. Insomniac’s alternate history shooter deviated from clichés set by both WWII and sci-fi games with a story about an alien invasion in the 1940s. Its sequel made some odd decisions, such as limiting the single-player loadout to two weapons instead of the well-liked weapon wheel from the first. After fans gave the sequel negative feedback, Insomniac made some significant changes heading into Resistance 3. Unfortunately, they’re not enough to keep the game from being a decidedly average shooter, and the most disappointing entry in the series.
In a somewhat related note, I was kind of scratching my head for what Morgan Webb (G4) said about the PS3's multiplayer. I guess I am not a "hardcore multiplayer fan."

Then again, if you are a hardcore multiplayer fan, are you really buying this game? Do you even have a PS3?

Picking up a copy later. I will see for myself. I know Garnett Lee was a fan of R1, but really disliked R2 (like a lot fans), while pretty much everybody in the media praised it. He says it's the best yet, and that encounters are strategic and dynamic.

So when is Call of Duty going to get knocked for this? I can practically see the strings being pulled in that series with how much smoke and mirrors is going on. Encounter design literally hasn't changed since the very first installment.

This annoys me when a reviewer knocks a game for borrowing from others and they all pretty much have that "been there, done that" feeling at this point. I'm not sure what else you can do with the genre though, but it's just funny to see when one is called out and not the others. This happens a lot and it's not limited to the shooter genre either, whether it's borrowing or hasn't changed much -- Hype? Publisher pressure? The amount of swag sent was insufficient? Wasn't a publisher review event where you're pampered or set up in some sweet resort?
