Yes. At least in the sense that it is not an open world. It is a series of missions in a linear order, most if not all of which require you to eliminate a specific target or targets. That’s okay, though, because my understanding of the game – having seen it in action – has morphed from something like ‘steampunk Deus Ex’ to ‘magic Hitman’. In what I’ve just been shown of the game, the same mission is tackled in two very different ways, with yet more described. And yes, I thought it looked amazing.There are, we’re told eight or nine different broad methods of completing a level. These were but two, and both were fatal. Another would have been to look for side missions in the streets around the Golden Cat – which, despite being a multi-tier building filled with side rooms and cellars and surrounded by gardens, constitutes “less than half” of the level’s overall space. One side mission opens up the roof path that allowed a stealthier entrance to the cat, but another would have involved doing favours for a local gangster and thus persuading him to help Corvo’s cause. It’s not shown today, but done right this results in the gangster kidnapping the Pendletons and forcing them to work in their own slave mines.On top of the multiple paths are the powers. This won’t be Skyrim, so taking your abilities down one route – for instance upgrading Possession to the point that you can assume control of another human, including your target – will come at the cost of another, such as time-slowing becoming time-freezing. Your build will, apparently, be distinct and crafted, not an eventual everyman. . It’s restrictive, but it should encourage experimentation with the powers you choose. Arkane talk of an unplanned discovery in playtesting whereby a player jumped out of a high window, but instead of splattering fatally onto the pavement, they possessed another character waiting below just a split-second before impact – and walked away unharmed. It’s discovery-play like that which puts Dishonored squarely as my most anticipated game of the year.

Dishonored is a game about systems, choices and unique pathways. The first time you see it in action your mind hurtles through a constant stream of comparisons. Deus Ex comes first, then Hitman, Thief, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, BioShock and even - at a point at which the hero occupies the body and soul of an ornamental fish - Disney's Sword in the Stone.
It's fine and dandy playing 'spot the JC Denton' in Dishonored; design lead Harvey Smith was after all the Lead Designer on the big DX. It's also inevitable that you'll see echoes of City 17 in the decrepit city of Dunwall - after all both these hellholes have a common artistic creator in Victor Antonov. Such an approach, however, does the game itself a massive disservice. Dishonored is its own game, and potentially a fantastic one at that.As such, if you're taking the stealthy route then the Cat is full of rafters to creep along, windows to weave in and out of, sinks to skulk behind and elegantly decorated panels for you to use your 'blink' transport ability to zip yourself through. Brilliantly, meanwhile, you can blow out candles while you caper through your silk and satin surroundings, leaving a shroud of darkness wherever you go.Alternatively, however, you can be creative with the scenery to make your actions look like accidents - one of them quite fancies a dabble in the steam room, for instance, so locating the right pressure wheel could result in a tragic fatal scalding. The bigger the blood trail you leave and the more innocents caught in the crossfire, the more your story will subtly change in tone as the world gets even darker, and the conversations of those with murdered loved ones come back to haunt you.
Dishonored, much like BioShock Infinite, is an elegant game for a more civilized age. It proudly stands out from the 2012 sequel conveyor belt, and if it fulfils its potential could be a defining game of this generation.
"Sound has a propagation system," said Raphael Colantonio, Arkane president and co-creative director on Dishonored. "It goes through doors and if the door is locked the sound is muffled, which is pretty cool from a stealth perspective. You need a good awareness of your environment and where the NPCs are."You'll find plenty of tools for combat, including spring razor traps that can be set on the ground and blast out sharp metal when triggered, a short sword and one-handed crossbow. Mixing these together with the supernatural abilities like wind blasts to shatter doors or reflect incoming projectiles, a time stop to get out of the way of gunfire or reconfigure a battle scene so, when the flow of time resumes, an enemy gets hit with his own bullet, it seems like there's plenty of room to be creative with navigating environments and taking out targets. You can even possess people in Dunwall, or save yourself from taking significant fall damage by possessing a rat on the way down. While inside a rodent you'll need to be careful, though, because nearby guards will try to stomp you.
While the action is going on, Arkane doesn't want to interrupt to deliver story, instead letting you discover it on your own. "There's a lot of environmental storytelling, notes you can read," said Colantonio. "We try to steer away from the cut-scenes that removes the player's control, though we have a few of those for very important moments. Mostly it stays in first-person and you can move around as the story's being told to you."
"Story is not the focus of video games," added Smith. "For us, we want something universal to draw the player in, then the main star is the gameplay. For us, the dynamic narrative that emerges from what you did and how that differs from what I did is the star."

Dishonored has pretty much come out of nowhere to become one of the buzz games of 2012 (justifiably so!), and everyone's going to see some pretty cool gameplay from it tonight during GTTV's big pre-E3 show on Spike tonight. But how about a sneak peek for you?
