    Re: Dishonored

Played for about 2 hours, and I am loving the game so far. Stealth gameplay is incrediably satisfying (among the best I have ever played so far), and the game seems flexible enough to allow for more of an action approach for people who aren't huge stealth fans as well. Combat is also flexible enough to switch between stealth and a more action oreiented aproach on the fly. AI is very challenging so far on hard, and the game makes you pay for sloppy execution. Visually the game isn't the best from techical standpoint, but the art style is gorgeous and unique.

Haven't got powers yet so the game should get even better from here. From what I have played so far if your a fan of games like Hitman, Deus Ex, Thief, and Bioshock this game is right up your alley. Also from what I played so far there is a ton of side stuff to collect, without even getting to any of the side missions yet, so I don't think length will be a problem if you are a completionist. It basically took me 2 hours just to get through the prologue, as I was making sure I didn't miss anything.

Just a note for stealth players, the lean function is paramount for effective stealth in this game.

I wasn't intrested because it was in first person. Then I heard "Steampunk Deus Ex"...is that a correct assesment?

Somewhat. It's a stealth action game with multiple ways to go about finishing your missions like Deus Ex. Different entrances to buildings and such like Deus Ex. The combat is a little more melee focused if you choose to play that way, instead of just sneaking around and assassinating people.

I finished the first actual mission, and I am finding this somewhat difficult (on Hard). I'm getting spotted too much and I'm trying to play a stealth character. It just seems like there are bad guys around every corner. I've gotten impatient several times already and gone on a few guard killing rampages. I imagine it would be incredibly hard to play through this all the way without killing anyone. I went in trying to do that and have already given up.

It's pretty fun though. I'm liking it so far.

I am playing on normal and if seen get killed by a mob of guards, thugs, etc. I find Dark Vision to be effective. You can see through walls and the enemies cone of vision. Blink is super helpful for stealth. Also, there was a sidequest where some thugs were at a door. I opened the door and got overwhelmed in combat. Then I went out a back way, came around and silently choked them out one at a time. The game has a level of variety that I hoped the original Bioshock would have had. Really great game 4 hours in. I have to do every side quest. I also had to replay the end of the first major mission to complete a side quest.

Are using the lean function often? It really is a big help in terms of looking around corners/objects, without being spotted. It definatly is challenging so far, but I am enjoying the challenge. This seems to be a thinking man's type of game, which really is a nice change of pace from the norm.

I did start my playthrough going for the non-lethal stealth approach, but after reloading saves a couple of times I decided to go with the flow. Still playing for stealth, but alternating between non-lethal and lethal takedowns depending on the situation. The first oppurtunity to perform a drop takedown/kill was too enticing to pass up. I'll probally go for a completely non-lethal playthrough on my second playthrough, once I am familar with the level and enemy layouts.

Yeah I use it sometimes, it's just frustrating because you have to be like perfectly lined up with the wall to see everything.

I'm starting to get accustomed to the powers now though and have been using blink and slow time a lot. I haven't used the see through walls once yet, and I'm sure that would help too.

I missed one of the runes on the first area I think from the old lady side mission where you

I am with you CC, I started the game and got first stealth knockout and thought I would try and finish the game like that and soon as I thought that I was fighting two guys LOL.

I am playing on hard with no objective markers. Game is challenging but feels great when you do something good.

For those who have gone the killing route, is it fun? I started last night on hard, and was able to get through the first mission without killing anyone. It was fun! But my only concern is that i felt pretty limited at times, since my only options were to (a) choke or (b) use one of my three sleep bolts. Seemed like if you're willing to kill, you get a lot more variety.

Same here as far as that old lady side mission goes. The reward is the final rune, but missing one isn't a big deal. The see through walls (dark vision) power is definatly a huge help stealthwise. I find myself using it constantly.

Anyways I just completed the first mission (Campbell) and this is one of my favorite games this gen so far. I would like to mention that the first mission, including collecting all the side stuff and doing the side missions took me 3+ hours. Unless the rest of the levels are drastically shorter, it seems obvious to me that the reviewers who completed this in less than 10 hours were using a straight action approach, and probally skipped most of the side stuff.

Without naming spoilerific names, did you kill you first target outright or take the other way around?

That's about what it took me as well. Maybe even a little longer because I kept loading saves a lot for the first 2/3 of the mission because I was trying not to kill anyone or be spotted.

The first mission was the longest by far. I felt the rest were a little more straightforward.

I didn't mean non lethal I meant in a way that lowers the chaos level. I did it that way as well, so I could finish the uncle side quest. I agree about the time issue. I find myself having to stop and think about what I want to do as the level progresses. I may try taking a tank like approach during the next play through.
