Not sure if this has been mentioned, but the best way to assault crash landed UFOs is to use the ladders found on the side of the ship and move your way back from on top. There is usually decent cover up there and the aliens reveal themselves slowly but surely, which gives you time to set up your team and take them out. The added bonus from attacking enemies from that height is invaluable. I got sick of raiding ships from the inside and getting sucked into ambushes. This game really gets tough around the 6th month into the campaign. Saw my first Sectopod tonight.

Ghost armor for assaults......use them to find where the enemy patrols are at and leave. Eventually they will leave the ship to come outside to look for you.

Archangel armor Sniper hovering outside with in the zone perk to pick them all off when they come looking for you.

Heavies with blaster launchers shooting those glowing green slow moving missile to blow the sectopod the hell up. Kind of funny, last night my sniper took out a sectopod by all by herself. She was so far back in the map he couldn't see her to shoot back LOL.

I finally got my engineers to build a couple of new Interceptors based on the alien technology and those things make a huge difference! These things fitted with Plasma Cannons along with Aim, Dodge and Track can take down a supply ship without receiving any damage. There is so much to love about this game it's hard to even express it all. The devs of this game should really be proud. Can't imagine how good a sequel would be.

I can finally say I beat this game. That last battle took me 2 1/2 hours. It was one hell of a nail biting grind when my damn sniper died half way through. Damn near cried when I ran over to try to revive her just to find out I ran out of medkits and already used my revivals. I had her for 38 missions, my longest lasting soldier. If I could build a statue for her, I would.

Congrats man! I plan on saying the same thing in a couple of weeks. What difficulty level were you on and were you using Ironman or not? Any plans for a second play through?

Just default normal for I could better understand and learn the ins and outs of the game. I must say one of the patches for this game made the last battle harder. I was looking at some of the earlier walk through videos for when the game first came out, my last battle had twice as many enemies and the layout was changed as well.

But yeah going for a second play through with second wave options on a much harder difficulty now that I have a way much better understanding of the game.

                Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Well just quick update on my campaign. Last week I assaulted the alien base with Laser weapons and Carpace armor and got murdered lol. This week I went in with Plasma and Titan armor and wiped the floor with alien blood!

The Foundry is amazing. I've already upgraded several weapons and items as well as installed the stealth sats. Somehow I was able to secure my home continent N. America with full sat coverage as well as Africa. Asia and S. America are completely lost. In Europe I have sat coverage over the UK and France with a Russian sat going up in about 12 days. Unfortunately Germany left my counsil very early so I won't get the continent bonus from Europe. I guess I should be ok keeping the panic levels down now, but it was a close call. Lost seven countries when the game over limit is 8 *whew*.

I haven't had much trouble with Sectopods, but I've also kept my squad well spread out and have been able to flank them while having a sniper hurt them with Squadsight and Double Tap from distance. Those things are very dangerous since they can fire their laser twice if they chose not to move before before they fire. The auto overwatch granted to them after they fire their laser cannons has caught me off guard a few times. These enemies really force you to play the game strategically. Making moves without planning ahead to the next squad turn equals death when fighting Sectopods.

Looking fwd to the second half of the game now! Amazing game and I love the fact that it's so simple presentation wise. The menu interfaces are old school, simple and very easy to navigate. The gameplay is challenging and the learning curb is moderate to steep. This is how the hell games are supposed to express themselves when a user is playing them. Can't sing praises loud enough man. Best 40 bucks I've spent current gen.

                  Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Sectopods are a pain in the butt on smaller maps and inside of ships. Especially when you get 2 of them at once and a handful of elite mutons running around all at the same time.

                    Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Got back to this at the end of last week and yesterday!

I'm now building the final building and then I'll be ready for the final mission.

I have 4 or 5 of my guys at the top rank, and am working on getting it so I have a final team of top tier guys (pretty simple, I'm rolling through missions now with my careful strategy). If I have a solid team with decent strategy am I good for the final mission? Do I really need any mind shields for my guys or no? I haven't had that many mind controllers yet, and I'm usually able to take them out pretty quick after taking someone over...

Looking forward to beating it and trying again on a harder level, or classic...I've been creating multiple saves but I don't use them (just the paranoid part of me), so classic probably wouldn't be too bad. I'll have to check into the new mod checkboxes they added too.

Mind shields are freaking expensive and it uses up a slot. So IMO you don't want more then 2 people with it. You going to need a lot of people carrying medkits. That final mission is the LONGEST mission in the whole game and is one very long grind. Don't think you will waltz your way through it with just one person carrying a medkit.

People going to get hurt and hurt bad, if they don't end up being killed out right. I lost 2 people in the final mission, but everybody in my squad was hurt bad, with less then half of their health left.

Hmmmm, thanks for the info. I have 2 support guys that I like to bring with me (both top levels), so I guess I'll just give them 2 medkits each and roll with that...I may have a support a bit further back, but not sure I want to roll 3 supports....

When this game got announced, came out, or even after all the glowing reviews I did not pay any attention to it. I forget how I noticed it but once I realized Firaxis made it, I bought it immediately. This game has me hooked, I will def. give it multiple playthroughs.

A sequel would be epic. Get goosebumps just thinking about the possibilities. It would be cool if humans could invade an alien planet and force them to defend their homeland!

Fought my first Ethereal on an alien ship this morning. Has anyone ever captured one alive? Every time I tried the percentage rate was so low I didn't waste time executing the action.

I did my 1st time seeing one! Just blind luck that i wounded him to 3 or 4 health and had my Assault with zapper near him. I think it was a 60% chance, but I also had guys who would kill him next if it failed...
