I may have overreacted. I like the fact that so many people share opinions. I just wish that they wouldn't be taken as personally as they are sometimes. Like I've been saying in the Golf game threads, videogames cater to different people for different reasons. Each individual has to decide what's "right" for him or her. Sometimes what appeals to you is not going to appeal to me, and we can discuss that. Just looking out for my boy Sonic. Us computer geeks have to stick together.

I hear ya there...too many times people take things personally on here. I have nothing against Sonic either...actually we've got quite a bit in common, just natural that we're not gonna agree on everything. oh, you can throw me in that computer geek category too

LOL I think so. Honestly people are allowed their opinions but Sonic is going off on wild tangents and making crap up off the top of his head. If Tetris raised your IQ then my ex-g/f from college would be a brain surgeon with the amount of time she played it. It is one thing not to agree with something, yet another to make us look like fools for enjoying it. That is my job.

Simple thing is since he did not care about the game/genre why even post on the thread. Why disrupt the discussion of what some of us think will be an interesting game, simply to say what we are playing is mush for the brain.

If only more people would simply stay out of threads they do not belong, we would have alot less problems on them.

I can totally relate with you, mgoblue, that sometimes we need a little escapism, especially in our line of work. I just get tired of games like this DOMINATING the market while most (but not all) of the ones that force some extra brain power to be utilized get left in the dust. I just think it should be the other way around. Stop giving games like GTA3 and Street Fighter the media attention and accolades that it doesnt deserve.

SOD, I dont even know where to begin to respond to your post because it appears you didnt understand the point I was trying to make. When I talk about educational games, I'm not talking about little dinky games for kids, I'm talking about the full-fledged effort for people of all ages as a means to grow mentally and psychologically.

bdoughty, I have NO DOUBT in my mind that Tetris and several other puzzle games and even card games can increase IQ scores. A third of those IQ tests are timed pattern recognition and well, isnt that what a puzzle game is???

One of the best horror games on the PC was a game called 7th Guest and it was completely based around puzzles. Resident Evil falls into a category of Survival Horror yet like all adventure games had puzzles. Just think of all the horror adventure games over the years that had puzzles. To numerous to list.

So if you claim Tetris can raise your IQ then I can say that our mush filled, brainless, uncreative horror games do the very same thing. Of course I know better...

                        Sonic-

I can totally appreciate where you are coming from, but it just isn't realistic. Yes, it would be nice if there were games that weren't just "dinky little kid's games" that had some educational purpose or value. It just isn't going to happen, though. At least not anytime in the foreseeable future.

Games like GTA get all the media attention because they are an easy target. Part of it was due to it being a completely different experience than any gamer had seen before, but the majority of the attention is/was negative because of all the media outlets and politicians using it as ammo for their crusade against any form of violent entertainment. Since there had never before been anything like GTA, it created a big buzz and threw about 50 logs onto the fire. Is that Rockstar's fault? Is that the fault of all the responsible people who want to have a new experience? The fact is, we live in a world where everyone wants a real quick and easy answer. Blaming things is the cleanest way to do it without having to look at the real problems. Until that changes, anything controversial is fodder for the crusaders.

I know deep down you wish otherwise, but not many people care to play something educational. Mention educational and video games in the same sentence and see how many gamers run away.

There are a ton of games out there that are challenging and force you to think your way through puzzles and things, and that is fine. That is about as far as the whole educational bit can be taken, though.

Personally, I want to play games that are fun and allow me to do things I wouldn't do in every day life. I solve enough problems when I am at work all day. When I get home, I want to fire up GTA, go up on a rooftop and spray people and cars up with a sniper rifle or rocket launcher. Call me crazy.

But, like I said earlier, there is a market out there for almost anyone, no matter how large or small it may be. Educational games can and should be made, but not many are going to buy them. That will in turn shrink the already tiny market even further, because game publishers aren't going to spend money and time on games that they can't sell. But if they can make games like Mary Kate and Ashley and Britney's Dance Beat, then there should be room for everything.

I am all for variety, but it seemed earlier that you were trying to look down on everyone else from your soap box.

Well I can tell two things....

                              A) It sure as hell isnt a puzzle game

                              and

                              B) There is gonna be some hackin-and-slashin(and perhaps some button-mashin) going on.

What more is there to know?

And nowhere did I talk about survival horror games in general. I enjoyed the original Resident Evil a great deal. 7th Guest and 11th Hour were also well-made games but they fit themselves within the "puzzle" genre as well as the horror one, so how does that apply as an example here?
