Here is where I currently am as far as playing through, mostly the same as you guys:

Weapon, Armor & Shield:

Using mostly Fire Sword +2, also a Bastard Sword +2, and sometimes the halbred thrown in still trying to get used to it. Also have a shield I use all the time that blocks 100% of physical damage (Draeglic Shield). For amror I'm using the Knight armor I just got in Heidi Tower.

Estus Flask is at 4 uses and +1

Currently working my way through the Heidi Tower.

Head back to the town and head again the direction of Heides tower. Theres a change in the room with the pillar there you'll definitely notice that will lead to

I would get the fire sword, it's in the land of giants in bottom of the castle area outside the 2nd bonfire.

I'm running with Brigand set I found, Scimitar +3, short sword +4, stone ring, life ring, chloranthy ring, ring of binding. Estus flask +1 x5.

Oh, and I did join the champions covenant only to later find out it makes the game harder. Aha so I quit it last night and have been blowing through areas and boss fights.

Yes that is what Im looking for. Thats basically after you pull the lever and walk through, correct?

I have no way to effectively fight so I am hoping the mist tutorials give me something to get to that area thats better than a broken sword I have now.

I played a little last night. Did not die once. I basically played like a complete wuss and just forged ahead to the outdoors area with our friend, the depressed knight. This time I did not try to fight like him in DS1..lol.

I am a warrior class and I got the last free item since it sounded so unsexy. The petrified wood. Maybe it will be awesome down the road. The life ring just sounded like id barely wear it.

So know I should probably go back and into the mists. I REALLY need a weapon. I have a broken sword and am scared to do anything..lol. Even those little pink pigs take too long for me to kill so I ended up running away from them like a wuss and then bon firing before I died.

Will the mist areas hook me up with a weapon, or what do I need to do?

Im also real curious about that giant guy with his back to me at the start where the footprints are. God this game...haha. It's the only game where I don;t just run around and jump into trouble. Any sign of trouble, like that castle with the levers, I just turn around get the heck out of there. Im just not in shape to fight anyone until I get a real sword and level it a little.

On a side note, how about those rings the cat sells? The one where you can hear enemies talking sounds AWESOME.

I heard if you "leave" petrified something in that birds nest, leave, not discard. It will give you an item in return. Also you will probay get a weapon drop in the tutorial especially if you use that coin I'm not sure, but I think it increases luck on drops and such. You can also get the silky stone in the river before the old ladies house if you go through a hole on the left and run past the Cyclopes it's in the river. You get more later on. I've got some nice items from the nest. Still haven't left the petrified yet tho doing more research :/

Became a sun bro last night, change of plans from my original thought. I thought I could get the actual red eye orb early but can't seem to find it so I haven't been invading as much as I'd like. Since I'm running a faith build, I thought hell why not let me guide the way for others. Grinding bosses just to collect sunlight medals at the moment.

its found after the skeleton lords and before the next boss (forget his name lol wasn't a memorable fight.) you'll come across a bridge and a guy with a hammer. If you cross the bridge take a left before entering the building.

Yeah I ran out of cracked red orbs, need to find the covenant to obtain the actual red eye orb. I have a feeling it's end game just like it was on dark souls 1.

Reading about what is to come is so exciting. I have a slate full of social actives this weekend and am almost wishing I did not, just so I could log a few solid 4-6 hour runs in. LOL That's embarrassing to type out, but it is what it is.

The rat guild sounds absolutely crazy. They took DS2 to a whole new level and it sounds like the replay value is going to be off the charts.

EDIT: of course, I finally found a weapon I want to use AFTER I decide to upgrade my starting mace after going through most of the game with a default one.
