        12 more days.
Combat engine looks good. I think the Batman series set the standard for open world combat. Shadow of Mordor gets the credit for being the first current generation "open world" game with an amazing visceral combat engine, now its looking like other developers are catching on. Static block animations (hint hint elder scrolls developers lmao) should be a thing of the past at this point.

In current gen games like this, weapons should actually clash, there should be extended counter animations off of the clash, its gotta have great sound effects to accompany the weapons as they meet, and add in some heft/weight. These four things HAVE to be present for me to purchase new titles (elder scrolls MIGHT get a pass just because the world is enormous!)

With that said, I'm definitely picking this up!!

The Witcher 2 had the same style combat, dodging / real-time combat.

Like all of us here I can't freaking wait for this. Thinking of taking a sick day to get a good long gaming session in. I haven't called out to play a game since Skyrim.

I'm still not quite 100% on this one. It looks fantastic but I have some reservations. Perhaps you guys can sell me on the game.

Call me a fanboy if you like, I suppose I am to some degree, but Bethesda games have simply spoiled me. I can't stand any RPG anymore that doesn't give me tons, and tons of freedom to explore and become the character I want to be. Skyrim, Oblivion, and Fallout 3 were and are just so unbelievably polished that I can't stand the slightest if shortcomings from other games. Do you guys think this is truly an RPG that could be considered Triple-A game? I love what I've seen and heard, but I've been fooled by trailers before. *cough* Fable *cough*

Some of those animations looked like something from the school of the Arkham series, like Shadow of Mordor.

If that's the case, yeah. I'm absolutely copping this. Even though I have absolutely zero knowledge of the lore of this series beyond there's a lot of sex and blood. A lot like Game of Thrones.

Skyrim, F3 and Oblivion had quite a few glitches and bugs... No where near polished at release.
Great games and some of my favorites to be sure but they had their issues.

I don't disagree entirely and again, I'll be the first to admit that I have Bethesda blinders on. But their games are just so solid and do so many things right. Not trying to hijack the thread here and turn it into a comparison. I'd really like to know more and more about the Witcher because it definitely intrigues me.

You cannot really mold your character how you want. You are Geralt. You will have interesting decisions to make, but you are who you are. To me the Witcher series is better than the Elder Scrolls series, but that is my personal taste.

Elder Scrolls worlds feel sterile, combat feels clunky and weightless, and is pretty light on story. Witcher, up until now, gives you far less freedom to explore (not open world), story heavy and combat that feels pretty good, not great but good.

The Elder Scrolls and Fallout series always felt rather empty and not nearly as "lived in" as The Witcher is attempting.

                              World

Essentially Witcher 3 is 5 ot 6 times as big as Skyrim and has no bland quests that Skyrim had. At least thats their main goal. The devs loved skyrim and played it to death but they had a lot of things they didt like about it.

The big point they wanted to make is that you in essence mattered what you did. In Skyrim you were basically just there doing your thing and nothing you did changed much in the core world.

In the Witcher say there is a monster that requires a human sacrifice every month but in return the villiage has stable economy and great furtile lands. You have a choice, to either kill the monster so people can stop living in fear of sacrifice or deliver the months sacrifice safely to the monster.

In this situation say you choose to kill the monster, well everything is fine and people dont live in fear however later the villiage goes through a drought, crops die, water dries up and it goes from a thriving economy to a poor, crime riddled dump.

Say you deliver the girl, the villiage opinion of you may suffer and the family may hate you (Not give you information, etc) but the Villiage will stay bustling and be a good area for you to shop, etc.

They are trying to make where there is a very blurry line between right and wrong and where your decisions could shape the world or destroy it. Hell from what I heard you can even effect the ecosystem and make things go extinct.

                              Combat

As for the combat its very tactical. Skyrim/fallout was a hell of a lot more lenient and you could just spam RT half the time and get away with it. The witcher there is weight behind every attack, fluid motions and depending on the enemy you got to be very careful. You have different powers (Flame, mines, etc) that allow you to set up ambushed and fight on your terms. There are 2 bl;ades you use and a cross bow for range (In previous games upgrades for these were available but not like skyrim and Fallout here there are many different types). Every fight is a learning experience in its own sense.

                              Story

IMO the story of Witcher is great, its a good telling narrative that puts you in Geralds shoes. You feel for characters and some actually hate or like. In skyrim for example there were only about 3 or so characters I even remembers after the fact or cared for. The Witcher wants each person to have a story, etc. This isnt really a fact or anything, just my personal experience.

                              EDIT:

Here are some notes from the dev:

                              Some Notes: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost...46&postcount=1
                              • "Everyone in this studio plays Skyrim" - team is a fan of open world games.
                              • Lessons learned from Skyrim: you need to care about immersion in the game.
                              • "Skyrim was generic". Disliked the way Skyrim handled quests, where NPCs would never really acknowledge what you accomplished or did. You'd have a generic set of quests and that's it. The team feels that quests should be unique and NPCs should acknowledge the things you've done for them.
                              • Felt this is where The Witcher 2 succeeded: choice and consequence. You got to see how your quest choices impacted the lives of NPCs, and you can speak to them about it, whether they're angry or happy.
                              • "(Skyrim) didn't have very good characters". Tried to remember and name five different characters from the game and couldn't.
                              • Thought exploring in Skyrim was great, but the story and characters were generic. So they want to learn from Skyrim how to best make an "open world". Make sure they have huge vistas, but plenty of adventures and stuff to do.
                              • Vistas are important. Notes the sensation of leaving the first dungeon in Skyrim and seeing the mountains and towns in the distance, delivering a feeling of a huge world to explore. Vistas need to deliver the feeling that you can explore things in the distance.
                              • Acknowledges the challenge of blending a cinematic experience and cutscenes with freedom of adventuring, not making boundaries. Always an issue with story driven games.
                              • Notes Fallout: New Vegas: thought it had a really good story and open world without too many cutscenes, but felt something was missing. Thought it might be caused by the tools, or something else, but whatever it was it shows that it's a big challenge to blend the two.
                              • Notes Assassin's Creed III: felt there was always something to do in the main quest, but trying to hunt down side quests always lead to generic stuff, and that hurt the immersion of the world.

I'm so back and forth on this game. I love how the combat sounds and each quest having actual meaning sounds great. The lack of being able to make the character your character is off-putting though.
