Re: The Order: 1886
Currently playing through Chapter 3....quick impressions....
Definitely more cinematic and story based with a lot of talking to advance the story. Slow paced. Come across a few QTE's and thus far, I have actually enjoyed them for what they're intended to be and what they're meant to do. There's lock picking which is cool and if there's one thing I have noticed - any game that I have played that has lock picking has always been a different variation/setup to it.
The weapons and gunplay is excellent. Seriously, very good. Cover system is good but like one review I read, it's too good. Game would have been even better if the cover was destructible.
The seamless transition from gameplay to cinematic is exactly the same. If it wasn't for the camera switching views, you wouldn't even know the difference.
Length wise, in over two hours, im currently going through chapter 3 and playing on hard. Had one instant fail which I don't like but considering what I was supposed to do, it made sense.
Obviously, a ways to go but thus far, im enjoying the game and still playing through. Hope those who are playing the game are enjoying as well.Comment

Just some random screen shots...
People are for reviews if it backs their argument, and against them when they don't.“I believe the game is designed to reward the ones who hit the hardest – If you can’t take it, you shouldn’t play!” Jack Lambert“Quarterbacks should wear dresses.” Jack LambertComment

Re: The Order: 1886
My game should be here any minute.
From what I've seen and read it seems like this game is a Gears of War (with the cover system) meets Red dead Redemption (with the dead eye) meets Uncharted (with the cqc) meets Heavy Rain (with the cinematic play).Comment

Re: The Order: 1886
Just picked up the game and also snagged GCU. I had a $10 reward certificate to use so I got both the game and GCU for a total of $70.50 after tax. That's a sweet deal. My wife's birthday is today so I probably won't get to play it until very late tonight or tomorrow night. Glad to hear some positive reviews from the guys on here.Comment

Re: The Order: 1886
I'm just at the start of chapter 6 I believe it is and I'm very much enjoying it. It starts off slow. It doesn't become an action-packed thriller by any means after the first little bit but it definitely does pick up and once I got settled into the pacing of the game, the story, characters and time period sucked me in.
It is the best looking console game I've ever seen personally and the sound matches the visual quality. Lighting is awesome though at times the game feels a bit dark. There's some really cool set piece scenes that I'm not going to spoil for you here.
The gunplay is a mixed bag, IMO. The weaponry itself is very cool. Where its a little lacking is in the oomph of the weapons. They're not totally without life as its definitely better than average but some of the guns you shoot in this game are really neat concepts and just the sheer size of them, I wish the devs conveyed the weight and meatiness of what it would be like to shoot these a little better.
The voice acting is so good that you don't notice it...that's the best compliment I can give any game. Almost every game before The Order, at some point or another, a weird tone or cadence would throw me off to remind me I'm playing a game. This one is near perfect.
Not sure how much further I have to go, I've gotten through 5 chapters in about 5hrs but I'm typically a bit more meticulous when it comes to playing games. I'm sure what I've played COULD be played through quicker but when it looks this good, why would you want to?

Re: The Order: 1886
Now that I have actually played the game, my quick thoughts then I'm out for good:
Gunplay = great. Weapons have a good oomph to them, cover works well, aiming, reloading, etc all intuitive and spot on as should be.
Graphics = best I've ever seen. Period.
Story = right up my alley. Steampunk altered history with Lycans, all wrapped in mystery? Count me in every time.
Pacing = heavily story driven. My first thought was Heavy Rain, but with actual gameplay.
Quick Time Events = never something I've had an issue with in games, and here I feel they are appropriately used and dispersed. Certainly no more used than in a game like Tomb Raider.
Total game length = at my current pace should take me just north of 10 hrs.
For those of you that picked it up, enjoy. Hell of an experienceComment

Re: The Order: 1886
Two hours of play time and two chapters (plus the prologue).
The most obvious and biggest plus for this game is the graphics. It's just Beatiful. The voice acting is very good and the cinematic is a lot of what everyone hoped for or even dislikes because...
The cinematic definitely overpowers the gameplay. Just two hours in and I get the feeling the developers are using this medium to make their movie. It's not a bad thing to me but it's noticeable that a lot of time was put into making the game look and feel like a film.
I'm not a fan of the gun play. It's still early so maybe the four guns I've tried aren't enough to weigh my opinion but right now they mostly feel like the same gun but a different look and result.
There are a few QTE moments but it's not continuous, nor is it overdone like say other cinematic games. But my biggest issue is that at times it seems I'm walking or pushing a button during a qte just so I have something to do.
A lot of the time, I think the moment would be better served without the QTE and just be cinematic straight through because the necessary action is either too short or linear.
What I mean is, at one point you enter a qte to raise your arms. So you hold triangle. You do it and the scene continues. If you don't, you die and start the moment again. I don't see how that qte is effective. Other games have done this too. Just seems like a wasted moment that pulls me out of the narrative to do something that could have easily been done without my input.
To me, a QTE should only occur when my success and failure both register in the cinematic and have conflicting consequences that move the story further. Even if the consequence is minor like: oh you didn't snap his neck properly so now you have to shoot him down as he cowers behind a wall.
Finally, the amount of instruction with QTE moments made me wonder when games started walking us through everything? This isn't necessarily a commentary on The Order but mostly on video gaming in general.
One QTE involved me aligning a moving reticle in a particular spot with a button press. But the QTE flat out tells me exactly how to solve the "puzzle". What happened to the days when someone figured out something on their own?
Another example is the use of R 1 when firing a gun. I struggled early trying to understand the purpose. And then suddenly later in my two hours, the game flat out tells me what R1 does and when to use it. I just felt sort of cheated. I wanted to figure it out on my own.
Remember when playing Zelda and you figured out how to use a new item? That was rewarding. That reward is missing in games and especially in The Order.
Now this small review of two hours sounds mostly negative but I'm not displeased with the game. Is it a certified hit? No. It's really just another game that does what it does. I'm enjoying it. If you like third person games and want a beautiful cinematic experience, go for it.
If you're looking for action like God of War or puzzles to solve like Uncharted, this isn't it. It seems the developers did a lot to separate themselves from being a copy of those two titles. Whether that's a good thing or bad thing is a matter of opinion.
