The reviews of this game confuse me. I am in no way bored. This is fantastic. I'm hooked!

Glad to see you folks are enjoying this game despite the reviews. Similar to how I have been loving Alien Iso despite the reviews. Will be picking this up as soon as a price drop for me. Game on!

I believe I'm on chapter 8 and have been playing for about 4-5 hours. I haven't been rushing but have been looking for artifacts most of the time. I feel like I'm playing at a normal pace. The second play through will be the thorough one.

              Re: The Order: 1886

Just started chapter V, loving every minute of this game! Playing at a normal pace, not rushing, checking stuff out and am also about 4-5 hrs into it. The graphics have to be some of the best ever! Every little thing in this game is beautiful to look at. Hopefully some of you on the fence will end up getting this game and help support RAD in their effort to bring us something out of the norm, no cookie cutter shooter or open world game.

It's refreshing to play a game like this, hopefully this game does well and The Order will continue on in sequels.

Please don't let some reviewer make your decision for you, at least rent it and see for yourself.

                Re: The Order: 1886

I'm with everyone else in this thread. I finished a chapter earlier, and decided to play some BF4 bc I don't want to completely rush through this. About halfway through one game of BF4 I had to stop so I could play The Order again. It's too good!

I'm very annoyed at how it got reviewed (the big sites especially). The game itself is much more simple than other games these days, but that in no way makes it bad. I wouldn't say it's the best game I've ever played, but it is really good. In terms of action, it's at about the same pace that The Last of Us had. I thought there would be more time between firefights, but it's actually pretty quick. I think anyone intrigued by the story and okay with a slower paced game than most out there right now should grab this.

I take back what I said about gunplay once the game opens up more and you have more gun types at your disposal.

The gun play is similar to Uncharted in that you basically just cover and shoot until the enemy just stops sending help. I'm completely cool with that.

The story is interesting to me as well. Not sure why anyone felt bored with it. The newspaper articles add some depth and you're clouded with this air of something more that your characters know but you don't.

It's well-written and performed. I don't see how it's any different than other cinematic games that receive good reviews.

That's good to hear because I wasn't happy with it after that first gunfight either. Especially when I shot the guy with the hostage and he wouldn't die so that it could show me what R1 does after busting open the door.

Failed that once because I was expecting a precision aiming event or something rather than the alt-fire tutorial showing there's no need for precision.

Biggest complaint is the interaction wedged in to break up cinemas so far, just let me watch the story, don't shoehorn interaction in just to say you did. Navigating multiple floors of a building and having to wait until the 'press L3 to run' instruction to be able to run was kinda silly too (especially having already been told how to run in the prologue).

As I get further from the tutorials hopefully this all improves. Can't play for extended sittings because allergies are killing me and can't look at the TV for extended periods. Frustrating.

I honestly don't get the reviews. I played for a few hours late last night, and had a blast. Really enjoying it, the only reason I quit was because it was 2:00 am and I had to be up early this morning.

I am really perplexed by the reviews knocking this game, while it is apparently short, I have really enjoyed my time with it so far. Just started Chapter VI when I went to be last night.

                          Re: The Order: 1886

I was finally able to dive in this morning playing through Chapter 3 in about 3 or 4 hours. The pacing of the game is very deliberate and if you're not looking for a story to follow then I can see where one would be bored between gameplay segments. To that end the reviews weren't surprising to me because they followed their respective impressions from last Spring and Fall. The locations are more linear and forward progressing than Uncharted, but I keep finding myself exploring each room and nook and simply stop to just appreciate the graphics. I'm really hoping they patch in a photo mode because you could spend 20 hours just admiring the artistry of the game.

Once you figure out the game design the QTE's are actually more immersive than ones I've played before. Even in my limited play time I've been instinctively mashing X, lining up square, and progressing with triangle. The melee segments are very impressive to me and quite brutal. It reminds me of the melee and gunplay from Uncharted with a more cinematic air. The gunplay itself is very satisfying. Aiming is quite smooth and each gun seems to have it's own quirk and enjoyment. The thermite rifle is amazing. Once you figure out how to use it efficiently with a group of enemies it's very fun. Watching a couple of Rebels toss around with sparks and flames will never get old. My only complaint is the lack of enemy strategy, but I did manage to die 3 or 4 times in one specific fight so it's not without some difficulty.

The score is really just as awesome as the graphics. It sets an appropriate atmosphere, heightening tension and action, and just brings the whole setting into the realm of interactive film. The performances for each character are remarkably done and one of the better acted games. Each one seems to have an air of mystery about them, but also familiar enough to almost trust completely and call friends.

Action packed this is not. Anyone looking for gun blazing knights hunting werewolves will be sorely disappointed. The pacing is deliberate and linear perhaps to a fault, but the primary driver of the game is the story. Gameplay segments are solid and very polished. After following the game since its announcement I knew what I was getting myself into, though. To those that have remained interested I can't recommend it enough.

Ok, I'll go ahead and offer up my initial impressions of the game, from approximately 4.5 hours and five chapters in, playing on hard difficulty... I apologize before hand if I jump around, and I will definitely try to not spoil anything about the story.

                            STORY:

First off, I am an engineer, and a person who has studied industrial technology, and its history. I also consider myself a closet steampunk fan as well. That said, I absolutely love the story! While deliberately paced at times, I think the overall balance is very good; yet another "trait" that I get accused of having as well [deliberate and methodical], so I can absolutely relate. I think the deliberate movement of the characters is no doubt done to add suspense. I would say that this game is more of a TLOU pace, rather than Gears of War. And is more story driven like TLOU too. I love how it makes reference to real historical events and people. The newspaper articles, items, and audio cans further add to the historical allure of everything. I can see how a younger person would not be into this game, however. My 21-year-old would definitely not be interested for more than 10 minutes, but my 7 y/o probably would, since he's more of a tech nerd like me, lol. The more I played, the more I became intrigued. The sense of mystery at this point is excellent! You have to look at the opening scene, and wonder OK, how did we get there?!?! And if you're paying attention to the dates, it's like wow so from here we got to that situation in X number of weeks? The mystery is multi-leveled too, from the Lycans to the Order to the relationship back history between the characters, along with some people's true intentions. Just great, IMO. Unless it totally leaves us hanging in the end, I don't see how this story can end up disappointing!

                            GAMEPLAY:

I actually really enjoy it. I think the seamlessness of transitions from cutscenes to gameplay is the best I've ever seen. I had a couple of occasions where I let off of the stick, to realize I was actually controlling that action. I like the shooting mechanic, and it does remind me of the first Uncharted game. This is a definite, more refined first step when compared to that series. So if they are allowed to continue, we should definitely be blown away in any sequels. I really like the cover system, and it is fairly intuitive IMO. I would like to see a quick transition to cover that is in front of you, like how it is going side to side. The hit detection is good, and seems fair. The weapons all have unique feels (damage-wise) and are overall very well done. They don't offer different 'kick' through the force feedback, so that would be nice to have. Like others have said, the QTEs are nicely done, and they actually make sense to the situation. They are pretty gruesome too. Nothing Kratos-like but still well presented. I also like how the QTEs change up (timing, directional, focus) so you actually have to follow the prompt. One gripe, if you will... the black bars sometimes have you wishing to see more, when in cover. Maybe a zoom out of the camera could remedy that. Destructible cover would also add another layer of strategy to the game.

                            GRAPHICS & SOUND:

The best looking game I've ever played. Period. Everything is very detailed in the world, and has caused me to get caught up in looking at things in the room or around me. I don't know how many screenshots I've taken, but I was wearing that SHARE button out! I was in Tesla's lab giddy as all get up because of the details on the chalkboards and maps and documents. There are a lot of dark areas of the game, but those tend to really draw you into the theatrical experience. The voice acting is superb, and subtitles ON is a must! So please do yourself that favor, if you haven't already. There is a lot to be missed without them on, unless of course you speak French and other languages. The sound is great to, and the soundtrack is one of the most fitting of any game I've played. The ambient noise alone is crazy. The sound of the weapons and gadgets bring a smile to my face, because scientifically they make sense (for the fictional) weapons.

                            OVERALL:

So far this has been a very pleasant experience for me. It really has me wishing this franchise will weather this storm, and bring us more in the future. Like I said, it is a better entry than Uncharted was way back when. And look where they are now... the influence of those ex-Naughty Dog folks definitely shows. Hopefully the can expand in a sequel, and give us more opportunity to explore this excellent universe. The cover system screams multiplayer too. So I'd love to see these crazy weapons in that type of mode (ala Resistance Fall of Man). It will definitely take me 12-plus hours to complete, well, because I am methodical and deliberate by nature. I understand some people are not, so it won't appeal to everyone. I wanted to support RAD because I think they do great work, and should be rewarded with a chance to be a SONY first party studio. So there is a lot riding on this for them. I will say that if you are on the fence, at least rent it and give it an extended shot, meaning try to stick with it past the first 2 chapters or so.

In closing, one thing this game has done is raise my hype level for upcoming games, namely Uncharted 4. It proves a game can look CG and still be a playable, seemless experience. So ND will probably blow us away come that time! Just imagine this game with the Uncharted gameplay engine...

Anyway, those are my initial impressions. I'm already jonesin' to get back into it, but I know it won't be until much later this evening.

                            Peace.

Thanks, CK! It's still very much a work in progress. I still have build-in the shelves, and install theater lights along the sides. Then build up a second row platform for my theater seats. Then paint of course.

I kind of got to a point of it being a functional theater, and production slowed way down...
