I'm curious how this game compares to Elite Dangerous.

I made to elite status in combat and then stopped playing the game when they introduced something called thargoids which I found to be unbeatable in solo which is the only mode I played.

It was a fun game with a vast universe and a lot of technical stuff to dive into.

Well they both take place in space. They have things in common but aren't really comparable IMO. Elite is more of a space sim and action oriented. NMS is more let's chill explore and build stuff with some very light "action"

It's interesting and all, but I wish it could be done within our existing saves instead of having a whole new game mode and then have the save converted to a normal mode save at the end of the expedition which just seems superfluous.

And I think I'm done with the expeditions, just too many issues on PS4. Tends to be lag when the system is crowded. the HUD thing at the top of the screen that shows the direction to buildings and such is so full of player base and save beacon icons that it's damn near impossible to find the icon you're looking for, especially if it's your own base icon. It's no better in space as all the planets are covered with icons and when trying to target one location with your pulse engine it constantly reorients to another target a good distance away. I've also gotten stuck in the warp animation twice and had to quit the game and tonight while approaching a space station I suddenly found myself embedded inside a derelict freighter causing me to continously take damage and die.

EDIT: The latest patch fixed a bunch of those issues.

Just started this up on the PS5, last night. Maaaan, what a complicated game! I mean, I like it, but there is definitely a lot to learn. Should be fun. I've always been kind of obsessed with collecting resources in my open world games. This will fill that need and then some. Lol!

Nearing the 5 year anniversary of this game (which is also how long I've been playing it, on and off), I finally powered through the storyline without getting sidetracked by side missions or just random exploring. Spoilers follow:

I kinda already had the nature of the NMS universe spoiled a while ago, so it was mostly just a matter of going through missions and taking in all of the details I was unclear on - not to mention the surprise of getting yeeted though portals to planets far away from where I had traveled, and even into interplanetary space without a ship!

So now, on the PC version, I'm in a different galaxy. This is pretty much where I wanted to be before really diving into the minutiae of how base building, missions, upgrades, etc work....there's just so much to do in this game.

But, what I think I'm going to do first is do it all over again on the PS5 version - because as much as I enjoyed the ride through the story on PC, The game seems to have some memory leak issues that only become apparent after a few hours of playing. The FPS while I'm wandering around my base will eventually just drop below 30, and it starts becoming unplayable until I quit out of the game. No such issues seem to exist on the PS5, and no crashes either thankfully - I had some issues with the game freezing around portals and monoliths on PC during the storyline that forced me to seek out black holes to reset the missions into better locations. Since the Next-gen update the PS5 version has outpaced what my PC can do with the game as well - it just looks and runs much better.

The story's not all that long, so it won't take much time to repeat my steps, especially if I pass on anything that's not required to complete the story (most of the base building stuff, etc...). One thing I hope to find in this playthrough, either in my first galaxy or the next one, is a temperate planet with low sentinel interaction, to really get a nice home base built without much annoyance. Although the thought of creating one on one of those extreme weather planets seems interesting in its own way.

I would love to try this game someday but the sheer monumentality always scares me away.

Picked it up the last time it was $30 and I really love it. I put over 200 hours into it, but in the last week it's become pretty evident to me that there's not a lot left to do other than just exploring different planets and systems, which, I mean, I'll STILL enjoy. Definitely not a knock. I've only went thru 4 galaxies. I found a good explorer and maxed out the warp drives and didn't touch anything else because you have to fix EVERYTHING whenever you jump galaxies, so maybe, one day I'll try and get to the center of the universe. I have 4 really nice bases on different planets that I go back and forth to and 2 sweet, fully upgraded S Class fighters, but I think it's time to take a little break. Started "A Plagues Tale," last night. Really enjoying it, so far. Gonna be a cool little story.

I'm closing in on 2000 hours and I'm still in the Euclid (1st galaxy) 300,000+ ly from the center. But I take my time and explore every world (1372) in ever;y system (326) that I visit. Yes, I keep track of all that in a sprreadsheet including biome, weather, sentinel activity/ flora/fauna levvel, min/max/mean temperature, thermal class, radiation, toxicity, fauna/plants/minerals/waypoints discovered

From what I've seen on Twitter, I've got a feeling the new update is coming really soon. My hiatus from NMS may be short lived. Lol! Still enjoying A Plague Tale, tho, so I'd have to split time.

This is probably the biggest redemption story in the video game industry.

I honestly think if you take the game as a whole. From beginning to its current state that you could make an argument that this is on the list of "Games of a Generation" It really is/has become an amazing experience.

I usually reinstall and hop back in with major updates but have skipped the last few as they were nice but not really enough to get me back in.

This new update though looks great and definitely looks good enough to earn a more permanent spot on my hard drive.
