That's how I feel about every Bethesda game, from Morrowind onward. They're fun, and you can do whatever you want, but they fail to hold my interest. Part of that is that, for me, they tend to lose a level of immersion when it comes to the point where you're doing a lot of side quests. My son is abducted and missing, but rather than chase him down, going into areas much harder for my level, I'm building houses and doing side quests. While that stuff is a huge part of what makes the game great, they also take away from the story aspect of it.
Tldr; while I like some sandbox games, personally I love much more linear games where the variation is more how to do things rather than what to do.
