    Re: Stellaris (PC)

So this is my first 4x grand strategy game that I have ever played. I recently got into PC gaming about 4 months ago. I find that as I am getting older, the FPS games and "typical" console games are not fun anymore. So, went out and purchased this new release as my first experience with 4x grand strategy and I am completely hooked! Now I know why people always say "if you are going to take the leap into 4x strategy games, be prepared to consume alot of your time".
This game is fantastic! It took my a while to get used to all the options and controls, but I am now on my second play through (I got surrounded on my first play through and could not expand any further, so I quit that campaign and started a new one).
I love the depth of this game and the constant expansion vs military vs society strategy. It really makes you think about your next move and how you want to build your empire.
I started on tiny system with 2 other AI and my next play through will be much larger scale.
I have no other 4x games to compare to, but Stellaris has me completely hooked and I have played all weekend. Great game!

        Re: Stellaris (PC)

Feel like I'm off to a good (?) start after restarting a couple of times. I've now colonized another planet, and have surveyed all star systems in the surrounding area. Even after colonization, I'm still producing extra energy each month (albeit not much).

I have run into two seperate empires, one of which is none too pleased that I am bordering their empire. I'd love to send my fleet in, but as of right now, it only consists of about 8 corvettes. I've got the spaceport level 2 being researched right now which states that I can construct destroyers, so I'm in hopes that I'll have a more formidable fleet.

I'm still VERY much so in a learning phase with this game, but the bigger picture is slowly coming together, mostly thanks to you guys. One of the let's plays linked in here got me off on the right foot, as there were a few key components to the game that I did not understand at all.

Looking forward to digging into this more!

I'm about 100 years into a game now. Helped my Ally win a war and my ally helped me win a war in which I have vassalized my enemy. Excited to read the upcoming changes. The mid game is getting a little stale so I'm just starting to war.

Well, I had to open my mouth .

I declared war on a bordering empire but I never bothered checking their actual home system to see what their naval capabilities were. Well, they immediately sent a fleet to my second world that was about 100 power higher than mine, and I had to retreat. They've now wiped out all of my mining and wormhole stations minus the ones near my home world, and they have a second fleet that I'm sure will be sent my way soon enough.

              I'm thinking it's time for a restart now .

I'll have to think carefully before declaring war next time. Just a stupid decision after actually getting off to a pretty good start. I was producing a lot of energy and minerals, was ready to colonize my third world, and was slowly researching my way up to destroyers and a better fleet.

I know the feeling. Once you start to get established and colonize a few planets, you start to think that you are "king" of the empire until the guy next door bangs down your door with an army 2x the size of yours...
I need to learn more patience and build more positive relations with my alien neighbors rather than pissing them off. There are many different ways to play this game. I am on only my second play attempt and already thinking about how I am going to play my 3rd.

you also have to watch out for who you guarantee independence with.
I did that agreement with someone across the galaxy, someone declared war on them, I didn't think I would be in any trouble, but a few years into the war, a 5K stack came into my home system and tore me up. my fleet at the time was only just over 1K. I had plenty of space for more, was just keeping my cost down.

they ended up destroying my home system, occupying my homeworld while my "ally" sat and did nothing the whole time.

eventually the war ended and my "ally" lost a planet. I didn't lose anything though, except having to rebuild all my stations and fleet. but it did wipe out all my corvettes so I could build Destroyers though. now my fleet is around 5k as well.

So after watching videos and reading stuff, I'm going to hold off until end of June when the update comes out. It looks great but with some of the small issues, I'll enjoy it more.

It's really fun though. I recently tried to play galactic civ 3 again and I just couldn't get into it after playing stellaris

Yeah it looks great, I still have some other games to finish up though, so they say they will be releasing an update the end of June. Maybe it will go on sale before then too, which I probably won't be able to pass up.

Ya, I stopped playing GalCiv3 about a month before this game released - couldnt handle the brutal AI any longer. So glad this game is out!

                            Re: Stellaris (PC)

I got to the year 2442, and that might be where i stop in that particular game.

I had one of the 3 "end-game Crisis" trigger, though it was on the other side of the galaxy and has not affected me yet.

It got to the point where I was in the same war over and over again, one of the enemies had the jump drive tech, which allows them to instantly jump to any system in a large range(no station needed). made it impossible to track them down, so the war usually ended up with my ally losing planets.
my ally would do nothing but have his entire fleet follow my fleet around. I had wormhole FTL while they had Warp, so what usually happen was I would jump to where the enemy was, we would engage for a minute, they would jump out, my ally finally arrives in time for me to jump out to follow the enemy. a few time I just went in and took over the enemies homeworlds, but them they would do the same to me.

my fleet was much stronger than theres, they just had those damn jump drive that are a lot better than the starting 3 FTL drives.

I had some fun. I genetically uplifted 2 different non-sentient species, one Desert, One Artic. that is a pretty cool feature. used them to colonize those types of planets I couldn't.

I technically enlightened the Humans from Sol system. they were a vassel for a while, but vassels can expand, so I released them and allied them. that ended up being a mistake. they block every effort to form a federation because they were Captialist pigs(games description). really wanted to try that out. In the end, they still didn't expand. I had to colonize and give them a planet.

there was another species I enlightened, this time I kept them as a vassel. they were fungus pacifists that lived on artic planets. they kept to themselves.

Played it on Ironman mode that time. I think I'll just do without that for my next game and add in some mods and try some out.

I've been playing the beta on this. I feel it really nerfed slavery, but it doesn't break my heart because the mircomanagement was a pain.

I ran a Fanatic Materialist/Militarist campaign. My fighting fungi took about a quarter of the galaxy, until I got too close to a xenophobic FE. Been fighting like crazy with them.

I'll probably start a new one today now that the patch is finalized.
