Halo and Halo-2...please explain the hype

    Folks,

I'm really taking a big step here by coming out and admitting the following fact about me but here goes...

I'm an XBox owner, have been for two years, and I've never played Halo.

Shew, there, I said it. That was tough. Anyway, I'm sure some of you are smacking the side of your computer monitors right now wondering what's wrong with me so I'll explain.

I'm not peticularly fond of shooters, nor do I enjoy games set in the future. I'm not big on science fiction. If I'm going to play a shooter, I'd much rather it be set in modern times in environments I can relate to.

I'm a sports game guy through and through, and very rarely do I ever venture outside of that genre for gaming pleasure. If I do, it's usually for games like True Crimes: Streets of LA, GTA, or even Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell.

My question is this: What's so great about Halo? Why is this game "the reason to buy an XBox"? Am I missing something truly great by not trying Halo or Halo-2? How is this game different from the dozens of other futuristic first-person shooters on the market?

Please note: I'm not slamming Halo in any way, shape, or form. I genuinely would like to know more about this game and why it's considered by many as the greatest game ever made.

I think you answered your own question. The game was revolutionary because the graphics were/are tremendous, the enemy AI has still not been matched by any game, the story line was fantastic, etc.

yeah, the single player was a lot of fun, and it had great control and multiplayer for a shooter. It is a lot of fun when playing with friends, simple to learn, but tough to completely master. The capture the flag mode can get insane. This will be great just as single player, but it's on Live too, so will be a lot of fun there as well. If you don't like shooters you probably won't like it, but it's the best shooter out there on console, maybe even best shooter out there.

                T.J.:

                Damn good, and valid, question.

I'm a perfect case study of Halo's mass appeal. Unlike you, I love shooters. But I don't care for sci-fi, and I prefer my shooters to take place in a military or urban environment.

Still, Halo is the best shooter I've ever played, for a handful of reasons.

First, the AI is great. Very smart, very challenging, very varied (say that 10 times fast).

Second, the game is long for a shooter. Single-player takes a good 20+ hours to finish, at least it did me, and I didn't quite finish. That's pretty good for a first-person shooter.

Third, the variety of environments was great. There also were some very cool vehicles to drive or fly and fight from.

Fourth, the synergy of addictive gameplay, believable story, superb graphics, and fantastic sound and music produced a complete package that I've only seen in one other video game -- Grand Theft Auto III. Halo is the complete package, no question.

Fifth, the graphics were great for the time and still stand up quite well.

Rent Halo with an open mind and see what you think. The game can be a touch slow in the first third, so you might not appreciate or see its true wonder through a rental. While the first third can be a bit ponderous at times, the last two-thirds simply rip. Fantastic stuff -- a game you can get lost in for a very long time.

                Good luck.

                Take care,
                PK

I felt the same way about Halo, wondering what the hell was all the fuss was about....until I actually played it. I only played it because it came with my green Xbox and I popped it in one day just to say that I tried it. Then from their I was addicted to it literally. I haven't been fond of games like that in a long time not since Duck Hunt and some of the older nintendo shooting games. When Madden and the other sports games started coming out I just went away from crazy games but was knocked off my chair when I played Halo. I can't wait till part 2 comes out. To believe it'll be out in a few weeks...

TJ, you should definitely rent or buy Halo and play through it before Halo 2 comes out. It's a great experience. My favorite shooter ever (until Halo 2 overtakes it).

Can anyone tell me the main difference between the PC version and XBOX version, and also is Halo 2 coming out for PC.
Just wait till Arsenal moves into Emirates Stadium.
