Finally got around to completing the main story of this game and I must say I wasn’t disappointed. Played all the God of War games and this one was great. Loved the story and the combat. Great job Santa Monica Studios. Looking forward to doing more of the favors and fighting the valkeries.

I bought myself this game when it was on sale for Black Friday and waited until Christmas to begin playing.

I must say, I don't see why it's so critically acclaimed as game of the year.

It's beautiful, but the combat feels like a bland grind: block, roll, throw the hammer, press R1 or R2 and repeat. What am I missing? The combat feels wonky and stale, particularly with standard enemies.
After more than eight years on here, I finally figured out how to edit my time zone!

          Well for one...it's an axe.

For me, God of War has always been about the scale. Huge enemies, huge set pieces, and that sense of epic-ness. This game tones it back but if you aren't big on the world building and lore then that's going to cause the game to suffer.

The other draw of the series, IMO, is the fluid combat. The sense of being in control. Some games act like you push a button and you have to wait and watch the animation and action play out, not so with God of War. The sequence you describe is the real draw, you dive in, hack and slash, throw the axe, punch a dude away, summon it back hitting two others, all while Atreus is raining down arrows on your foes.

If it's not your jam, at least you got it on the cheap, and there are plenty of other AAA games to try. I have limited time and if a game doesn't hook me I've learned to just give them a pass and move on. Good luck!

God of War's combat is absolutely positively and definitely NOT clunky. The only game this generation to have more fluid, smooth and responsive gameplay and combat is Horizon Zero Dawn with God of War right behind it.

With that said, if you're not getting into it or enjoying it, either stick with it for a more hours to see if it clicks or just trade it in and move on to another game.

Started this up yesterday. Played for about 4 hours or so. I think I'm going to like it, but it's gonna take a little time to get used to the controls and everything after spending soooo many hours on RDR2.

I finished the main story a few day ago. At first I didn't see why everyone was praising this game so much, but then , wow just an amazing journey once you get further into it. So many fantastic visuals in this game. Now I'm just going to go back and explore and complete all the smaller things I missed. Great game.

I just finished this last night and received an e-mail from Playstation about it today confirming I had finished it with my hours played (63) and trophies (25) and telling me I still had much left to do. (Which is true). That's a nice touch.

I'm not much into these fighting style games but I enjoyed it. The father-son story reminded me of the father-daughter story from the Last of Us.

I finished playing this last week, incredible game for sure. My thoughts:
                        • Beautiful game, graphically, without any glitches or hiccups
                        • No cutscenes truly made a cinematic experience. The best story I've experienced in a video game thus far had been the Metal Gear Solid series (1, 3) so this is a game changer IMO. The transitions were incredible, I hope more video games use this
                        • Proof also that voice acting has a HUGE part in RPG games. The atmosphere and experience definitely would've been different with different acting.
                        • Gameplay mechanics were very fun and graphic. The R3 kills just made me LOL initially, it felt like Mortal Kombat
                        • Busting out the blades definitely was the "Holy crap this is awesome" moment of the game
                        • For an open world game, the story was pretty linear but I'm ok with that. Rest of the side missions was more of a filler to get better gear so definitely usable but not required (such as the MIST realm, various favors, etc. I would've liked more compelling side quests that dealt with the story but not a biggie
                        • Ending felt a bit anti-climatic at first. But the more I've thought about, the more fitting it felt to the story arc. Even all the GOLD prints on every direction Kratos/Atreus should take were Faye leading the way ahead of time. Very nice touch I didn't catch on to.

It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.

If you didn't yet, make sure you go back home after the ending to complete your journey.

Downloaded this on PS+ right before Christmas while in quarantine with covid.

Just amazing! I can't believe I've never had any interest in this series. Just finished the story portion over the weekend and now im doing all the side quests.

I was reading through some of the recent previous posts and noticed someone didn't like the combat. I couldn't disagree more. I find it so satisfying and addictive. Climbing on an Ogre and finishing him never gets old to me.

The 2 Dark Elves encounter took awhile and was frustrating but there are so many combinations you can use with your armor sockets and I finally found the right one and ended up beating them. Man that felt good!

I'm gonna start playing the rest of the series once I've gotten everything else done in this.

                            But WOW what an experience!

Just out of curiosity, how long did it take you to run through the story? I've had this game sitting around in shrink wrap forever, but haven't had the motivation to pull it out. But you guys are pumping me up to do so in this thread lately...

My stats say I've got a total of 34 hours in the game.

I'd say the story for me was around 28 to 30 hours It literally took me half a day to beat the final dark elves encounter. I played on the balanced difficulty.

Game is amazing! You won't be disappointed!
