If you skin it you keep just the pelt, laying flat on the rear of your horse. That's what I'd like to do with the larger pelts but maybe the game makes it impossible since they're so large.
Oh my goodness, I've never known this. Well, I sort of did. What I generally do is skin the deer, then lay the carcass on the back of my horse as well. I never leave them unskinned. I think the first time I tried it, I realized I didn't make as much money with the trapper or something as I did by skinning it first and selling both separately. Maybe I have to read up on this on the help section of the game to be certain of what is most beneficial in any situation.

But yes, you can't just keep the pelt. I assumed the pelt was too large to lay flat and that's why it was rolled up. Didn't know there were items in it (because I thought they went in the satchel or something), but as I said without them it's still probably too big. You can try the second horse idea though.

I have another general hunting question someone might know the answer to:

Does the way/place the animal falls have anything to do with the condition of the carcass and pelt?

I have been careful to try and shoot deer so that they don't fall over on the run as to "dirty up the pelt," because I thought that led to poor conditions. However, recently I noticed that if you study the animal it will tell you what kind of condition it's in to begin with, meaning that combined with the method/location/amount of times you shoot it determine the condition only.

So, if something falls in the mud and rolls over and over down a hill, does that factor in deteriorating its condition when I try and skin/sell it?

No, dirt, mud, or falling down the hill does not have any impact.

That's almost too bad, but good to know at the same time. Thanks.

If it’s a larger animal the pelt stays rolled up, you don’t get to carry the carcass either.

When I’m hunting I usually bring my horse, temp horse and I steal a horse. This gives me three horses to carry animals. Just be careful with the stolen horse because it will get spooked easy and could run off with your spoils. I always hitch it when I dismount.

I'm aware. Sorry if it sounded like I thought you could do that.

That's a good idea. I guess I'm afraid of lowering my honor too much if I do it too often, lol.

Question for the hunters. When you find a Perfect pelt how long do you have before it starts to decay? I've been getting a pelt then taking it back to camp right then.

I don't think the pelts decay, only the carcass ( and I guess the pelt if you didn't skin it)

You know, even though they say stuff decays, I never had anything decay on me. Like I had been carrying raw meat and fish in my satchel for days. It never went bad.

Mine do. It starts to go decay when it has flies, then eventually if you keep it long enough you'll get a pop-up icon that says it has decomposed to the point that it cannot be sold. I don't know how long that takes exactly, but it's quite a while.

Very cool thing today. Up in the Grizzly Mountains running the High Stakes Treasure map quest line and hunting as well (always seem to be hunting everywhere I go LOL).

So coming down the path and approaching the massive frozen lake....I see 3 Gray Wolves barking up a storm at a huge grizzly bear fighting over a dead deer. The pack of wolves probably killed it an then along came this massive bear and said...."oh thank you this is mine now”.

Eventually the Wolves give up and scatter......then....pull out my sniper rifle and clean kill a 3 star grizzly.

                              The game is simply magnificent.
