Yep. Sorry. Nothing but doom and gloom from me the last couple pages. Ha.

At this point, I have a really difficult time believing Rockstar won't give RDR2 the single player treatment it deserves. If I had to guess, I'm not sure they're a company at this point that plans on abandoning one aspect for another. Rather, with the number of years they commit to development, I think it's quite likely they'll just go ahead and provide the best of both worlds in the form of an incredible single player campaign and robust online experience.

I get the concern, but maybe try to relax and just see what happens instead of worrying about what a game that's at least 5 years away is going to be like? RDR2 will almost certainly have a strong single player offering and GTA VI is a long, long ways off. Doesn't seem worth worrying about right now haha

All this talk is ridiculous. We are talking about Rockstar here. They do not put out half a** games. This particular game has been in production for 5+ years.

I don't care what theorized examples are drummed up. This is my most anticipated game, probably ever. And this is Rockstar. The single player WILL BE amazing. Online will be great too but NOT at comprising the campaign.

              1. I never said it would be a half a** game. GTA Online is exceptionally well done. I'm the first to admit that. It's just not what I would ultimately want in a game.

              2. It's not a theorized example. Rockstar specifically said they were going to release substantial amounts of DLC for the single player campaign and continue the stories of Michael, Trevor, and Franklin. They never did that, so they did compromise the campaign.

              3. A lot of you guys are still missing the point. Red Dead Redemption 2 will have a huge single player story I'm sure. But I wouldn't bank on having any single-player DLC.

The ultimate point here is that Rockstar is making unfathomable money off their online mode which they never anticipated. This doesn't mean they're going to make crappy games in the future, but rather just potentially different ones.

For those of you that prefer the single player story mode over the offline mode, does it not concern you in the slightest that a) Rockstar COMPLETELY abandoned the single player DLC after GTA Online became so successful and b) that they've made substantially more money on the Online mode than the single player campaign?

*If you argue that they didn't make more money online than single player, you've not done your homework.

Lastly, for anyone that argues that this talk is, "ridiculous," it's not. It is fairly well documented that single-player story games are in deep decline. They cost tons of money and manpower to make and if online modes of games, like GTA Online can make infinitely more money than their offline counterparts, it's a no-brainer for game developers on what to spend their time on. This has been a legitimate concern in the industry for people that love single-player games for the past few years and the unparalleled success of GTA Online is exacerbating the potential problem.

I'm not saying there won't be any more single player games. I'm not saying that Rockstar is going to start making crap. I am saying that the amount of high quality single player games and the amount of additional content for those games is decreasing dramatically. Both the quantity of the games and potentially the quality.

                Re: Red Dead Redemption 2

Yes, not getting GTA V SP DLC offends me after they announced it to happen. I am not a big fan of GTA or RDR MP personally (it's not like they're toxic to my health or anything, but I get those games for SP) and love how they handle and brand the SP game. MP gets too over-the-top and I fall behind really quickly when I can't devote a lot of time to it.

I just don't ever expect RDR to shortchange us on SP upon a game's release is all. They want Metacritic to show a 100 score if it's possible, and if "10-15 hour campaign" was one of the featured points of their games, you know that every major gaming website publication would be all over that as a demerit compared to their games of old, and I'm talking two generations ago.

The only reason I can see something change is because Leslie Benzies is no longer helming the company. Who knows what direction they choose to go as a result of that. Due to that, I'm at least with you that I wouldn't be surprised if SP DLC wasn't a planned thing for future R* games.

                  Re: Red Dead Redemption 2

I don't expect the SP to see a decline, but it wouldn't surprise me. I was a bit disappointed with V's SP length. The quality of the content was great, but the game was incredibly short and I expected more replay value with it. I feel like Vice City and San Andreas offered a better SP experience for their times than V did when it came out. I just played both of those a summer or two ago and they are still incredibly enjoyable for me 500 times through them. I've only played through V 2.5 times and I've completely stopped playing online and did a long time ago.

I don't fault Rockstar for cashing in like they have, but I feel like I am no longer their target audience these days and it saddens me that I don't look forward to the next GTA like I used to. I just hope that RDR 2's single player is as long as the original. I don't doubt the world or the story will be amazing in quality, but the length of the game is what worries me the most after GTA V.

I remember Rockstar giving us 2 weeks to play the SP before the online was opened up and I had to pace myself or else I would have beaten the game 2-3 times in those 2 weeks. Playing an hour or two a 4-5 nights a week will easily allow you to beat V in one week and that's just no what GTA should be to me. That's all just my opinion, though. I know plenty of people that actually thought V was a long game.

                    Re: Red Dead Redemption 2

Maybe I'm naive, but I'm not concerned about a short SP experience in RDR2.
This delay actually encourages me as I think it's much harder to build a dynamic, organic SP experience.
I would think it's easier to simply build a map and allow MP gamers to jump in and shoot each other.
But providing a world where every action has a long-term reaction? I can only imagine how much time and resources are needed to make that happen.

I'm an SP guy all the way, but I'd also love it if R* gave us the ability to add a friend or two into our SP worlds.
It would be a lot of fun to team-up with a buddy to take down a gang, or collect a bounty.
On the flip-side, it'd also be cool to spend hours tracking down a bandit, only to find out your friend got their first.
Or that the local bar is shut down because your friend shot the place up, including the barkeep ("he don't take no lip from no barkeep either").

I would welcome MP in that type of scenario.

I'm sort of anti-social when it comes to videogames....I talk to people all day long. When I want to zone out in front of the ol' boob tube, I want to basically shut down the social aspect of my brain.

I have no worries about RDR2, though...I'm confident it will be robust as a single player offline experience, in the grand tradition of Rockstar games. As I said before, given the total lack of college sports games (forever?), the only thing that would nudge me toward picking up a current-gen console would be RDR2.
