A last gen game having more story missions than a current gen game is embarrassing to say the least. I haven't been a hardcore Rockstar fan since PS2 but story wise, their games are great and better than the majority out there.

I believe the real number is 69, not 79.

The following is a list of missions featured in Grand Theft Auto V. In the game, many missions are available at the same time from multiple characters, so this list does not reflect any required chronological order of completion. Each character's respective missions, however, can only be completed in the order listed. And, of course, some characters and their respective missions may not be unlocked until certain missions are completed. In total, there are 69 story missions, which are the...

The issue with GTA V is outside of the main story missions there are not a ton of things to do like there are in the games you listed. Half of the side activities in GTA V were just talking with your psychiatrist. San Andreas had a large arsenal of things to do on the side plus double the storyline missions that were not simply steal a 4 door car and park it in an alley like GTA V had.

I still beat V's story multiple times and had fun with it, but it's a very lacking game and their decisions on DLC made the situation worse. A summer or two ago I speed ran through III, VC, SA, and V. V was the one I beat 2nd fastest after GTA III because of how short and simple too many of the missions are.

I'd like to see RDR 2 focus more on the depth of missions and making sure that even if it only has 65 missions, they all take time. Having under 70 missions like V did and having 10 or so of them all being literally under 60 seconds of activity is not a good look and where my complaints fall with V.

EDIT: I see where it has 79 if you are counting all of the choices you could make in the game, but in each playthrough it's the 69.

According to IGN Wiki, it's actually 81 total. The 69 is from Rockstar because well, look at the number. LOL.

I fully enjoyed the story in GTA V. It was all the outside stuff that didn't interest me. I enjoyed the story in Horizon and AC Origins but Horizon took about a third to get going while AC Origins completely rushed the ending with a swerve and just too little. 23 story missions for an open world game, especially one that's becoming an RPG is embarrassing to me and I love Ubisoft so for me to say it is saying something.

Personally, I would prefer 40, 50 or more story missions and less side content. I want the story to be excellent and fleshed out where the characters are truly a character that you'll remember as opposed to "who"?

Would I choose Horizon or ACO over GTA 5 overall? Absolutely but story wise, I think GTA 5 is better than ACO and possibly Horizon not because of the length but because of how much detail and focus is put into the three characters in that story. Plus, it doesn't take a third to get going and the ending isn't rushed.

Gameplay wise, yeah, it's not even close. Both Horizon and ACO are easily better. Of course, you also have to be into GTA 5 or whatever game to truly enjoy the story. I'm not fully into GTA 5 but I fully enjoyed the story, mainly because of Trevor. I do think that if you subtract him, the story is average at best.

As for RDR 2, I think that the story will be great. Won't be a 10 or anything like that but im expecting say around an 8 or so just for the story. Don't know about anyone else but im not going to complain about that.

For the Uncharted comment. Those are linear games though. Way easier to develop than a massive open world. Technically speaking though, Naughty Dog gave us three uncharted games and TLOU last gen. This gen, they gave us Uncharted 4, Lost Legacy and the upcoming TLOUP2. All three of these games have more to them and have bigger areas than the other four games. Plus, Uncharted 4 was originally different via Amy Hennig and Neil Druckmann came in and changed almost everything which definitely put them behind but still, to release the game three years after TLOU was pretty impressive. And im not even counting the year or so Naughty Dog spent on the TLOUR for PS4. Naughty Dog was simply behind this gen due to various reasons. Also, when it comes to TLOU, it was a second team that was working on the game alongside Uncharted 3.

This is my problem with V. Compared to IV it had more side content, but going back to SA or VC it had less side content and less story content.

What made SA the best in the series was we got 100+ missions for the story. A story that fit the game well and personally was no worse than V's, but we also got tons of side content. Most open world gamers want story and side content and they want more of each. V gave us less of each.

What also helped San Andreas is the short missions weren't as short as they are in V. Outside of the mission Big Smoke where you literally walk into your safehouse and watch a cut scene the shorter missions in the game still took more than 60 seconds. I think Ryder was the 2nd shortest mission in the game and it still involved driving to a pizza shop, going to the barber, then going home. The same time it took to beat that mission you could beat 5 or so of the shorter missions from V.

Anyways, we'll find out soon enough. I doubt RDR2 will suffer as much as V did with the issue of missions lacking in action or content. The setting likely won't allow it as much.

I can't really comment on San Andreas because I was kind of done with GTA by that time. I bought GTA IV for 360 digitally cheap and like SA, quit after an hour if that. After Vice City which I loved, I was simply done. Only played through GTA V because I needed a new PS3 at the time and bought the PS3 GTA V super slim bundle. Since I was waiting for Black Flag, I was bored and had nothing to play so I played GTA V. Taking a decade or so break from it probably allowed me to get more into it as I wasn't burnt out with the franchise.

I want a lot of content in open world games BUT I prefer the story to be longer than all the side quests. The side activities comes down to if I simply enjoy them or not.

We'll have to see how RDR 2 turns out. My prediction is that it will be a great game but the majority of gamers (not critics) will prefer the original game more.

Believe me, I can appreciate Rockstar and their marketing strategy. It worked just fine for GTAV sales. But PLEASE, throw us a bone here! This is my most anticipated game ever. Yes ever. Rockstar has used its whole team over the last 7 years to create their first true next gen game?? That and RDR was a classic? Yes please!

This game is going to knock some socks off.

                Re: Red Dead Redemption 2

They don't have to release a gameplay video, trailer, or even announce that it's being made. One day they can just say: "It's on the shelves," and all will be good.

Not the best strategy for their stockholders though, I'd bet.

As much as I want a gameplay video to come out, I should also refrain from watching it in full so I can experience it all for myself. It's working well like that for movie trailers!
