Its still a business, just announcing games like RDR 2 will increase sales among all of R* games. They announce it in October, remind everyone in May its still a thing(and delay), and from here on out it will be a steady trickle of Info. It builds excitement and it sells copies of RDR and previous GTA games.

I personally do not mind when R* does this as they have a really solid track record of delivering what they show early. Ubisoft for example takes this model to the extreme, announce a game with a jaw dropping trailer then gradually scale it back. I would give examples of this but its literally every ubisoft game.

Yea I don't mind it either. There's no company who delivers a better final product than they do.

We'd be kidding ourselves if we thought this (the delay
of every R* game ever) was anything less than them building hype. It's why they don't/ dont need to advertise their games until they're about to release.

Every last bit of it is calculated marketing. And damn right I prefer it over rushing releases or releasing the crap other companies release.

I'm glad it's delayed. By then, I'll have a new TV and PS4 Pro (upgrading when the new Spider-Man comes out).

May 2018 is my guess which I must admit im happy about. This fall will be packed for me while May could be a dead month for me so having RDR2 would be great especially if it comes out early in the month.

For the game itself, let it get as much time as it needs especially since they don't have Leslie Benzies anymore.

I figured it would be bumped as well. IMO Rockstar is the cream of the crop and a May release will follow suit with the original. Always said I will purchase my 4K TV for THIS game. Now I have a few extra months to get the top rated 2017 model at a good price.

              This game will not disappoint.

I agree generally speaking, but this definitely did not apply to GTA Online, or in the least, the game was finished but they simply weren't prepared for the rush of people online.

                      Re: Red Dead Redemption 2

I knew a delay was possible but I'm still bummed. I'm really, really looking forward to this game and I was kind of hoping to dive into it during the winter doldrums.

That said, I've been playing Mafia 3 lately and while I generally enjoy the game, it has served as a constant reminder of what makes Rockstar games so incredible. Every time my Mafia character is hit by a car and remains upright, every time my game crashes back to the home screen, every time I see bottles and lamps floating in air, and every time the day-to-night lighting shifts randomly and dramatically, I'm reminded of how far advanced the GTA's and RDR's are of the world.

As such, I understand the delay and support it in the name of quality, but I'm going to be missing it this fall.

In my opinion, Mafia 3 should never come up when discussing open-world game quality. Unless you are comparing it to GTA 3...and even then...

I enjoyed Mafia III. Best story and characters in any game of 2016 by far. Best soundtrack. Gameplay was solid but very repetitive. GTA V was technical wise, a better game but the gameplay is still clunky, the melee combat is horrible, shooting is literally the same as GTA III and while the story in GTA V was good and well done, subtract Trevor and the entire game falls apart where as in Mafia III, nearly character was damn good in their own way.

As for crashes, etc., I played around 80 hours or so and I only had one time when I had to reset the game because I crashed the car, flipped upside down and had to restart the game but it only happened once. Weather wise, if it changes when you start a mission, it's preset to fit the tone of the mission.

With all of that said, it could have used six more months this generation and that's on TTI (Take Two Interactive) because they own 2K and Rockstar and decided NOT to delay the game. If the development team needs extra time, it's up to the publisher to give it to them. With games like Mafia III that have problems, I never blame the developer because they are under time constraints and most likely, crappy working conditions and when released, it's obvious that the publisher simply didn't care about the quality of the game.

I am however looking forward to when all three expansions are available so I can redeem the season pass and play all three in a row.

Mafia III isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination. I have played and completed worse games this generation. The visuals were good but the lighting effects were bad and for story missions, preset. Story, characters and soundtrack were all by far the best of 2016. Gameplay isn't great but it's not bad either. Main negative for most was that it's a Ubisoft style open world game but for me, it was near perfect. The repetitiveness was bad but the CPU enemy AI was the worse. The other problems could have easily been forgiven if the CPU enemy AI was better.

I think what Ubisoft did with Watch Dogs 2, open-world wise, was great. Some things are superior to Rockstar's open-world, in my opinion. It is a living-breathing world (not as a catch-phrase, but actually is). Mafia 3, as an open-world game, fails. The world is pretty dead. Yeah, the cars are nice and the map is decent, but it's like LA Noire's world = just a poster in the background.

In Mafia 3 you can't really interact with NPCs or with the environment, the day-night cycle is strange, it becomes pretty boring to walk/drive around after a short while, and only if you are in the middle of an interesting/intense mission, you are actually having fun. Which is the complete opposite of what open-world means to me. It means that I can ignore missions and just wander around and do whatever for hours - and still being entertained. To me, that's the essence of open-world games. Not that you can drive anywhere on the map, but everything that's around you.

Rockstar sure know what they're doing, I'm never worried about their open-world games.

I respect your opinion and I didn't mean to step on any toes. I like Mafia as well. I'm still playing it frequently as I try to complete the story. It just seems to be the anti-GTA when it comes to the little things.

I don't play a ton of video games outside of NBA 2K, Bioshock, and Rockstar releases so I think I assumed most big name open world games would at least be close to 2013's GTA V, particularly with the console upgrade since then. But Mafia feels like an early 360 game in a lot of ways, to me anyway. In fact, even on 360, I never had a game hard crash to the dashboard as frequently as this one does (once every 1-2 days on XBoxOne).

Even beyond the hardware portion, there's just a lot of oddities. Last night my character killed someone as they were swinging open a door and as a result, the door began swinging violently in a full circle (through the wall even) non-stop. Even things like the discontinuity between what I have my character wearing and what they suddenly change into during cut-scenes tends to catch the eye.

Also, regarding weather and lighting, I was, in part, thinking of the times where I think the game's trying to transition from "city lighting" to "country lighting" at night. A lot of those transitions are rough, with clear sudden level drops. There tends to be a lack of smoothness in that regard, which is probably tough to do, which is the point. GTA and RDR somehow made all that stuff seem routine.

Now, I just bought Mafia a few weeks ago after reading about a ton of patches and improvements they've made since release so I bet a lot of this stuff doesn't happen anymore, but a fair amount of it still does. Here's the kind of things I'm talking about:
