Maybe I am picky? I don't know. I like all sorts of games. All-time faves have to be "Civilization" (any one), NFL2K5, Red Dead Redemption, among others. This gen? RDR2 and MLB The Show are probably the most-played. But I like all sorts of games. I like the "Uncharted" series - I thought Uncharted 4 was good.

Is anyone watching the "official" story trailer?

So - this was leaked by a hacker? Is that the latest revelation? Or did I misread that somewhere?

This is going to be a gorgeous looking game. Outside of that I really want to see what further mutations the infected have undergone. If I remember correctly, the Bloaters were the most mutated at about 10 years.

Games I've pumped hours into and really enjoyed are:

          GTA V
          Red Dead Redemptino II
          Watch Dogs 2
          The Witcher 3
          Mafia II
          Mafia III

You'll see these are all open world, but there is also

          Tomb Raider
          Metro 2033
          Metro Last Light

I had a very long post written up, but I deleted it to try and get my point out in less words. I will admit that I like open world games more than linear games, but I do like linear games enough to enjoy some and beat them. Games like Metro do force you to manage your resources and make tough decisions during the game.

In TLOU I never felt pressed to make decisions with my resources. Even on Hard you always had a Walmart in your backpack. And the AI was weak. The humans were a joke to sneak up on or to just sprint around and flank constantly. The nonhuman enemies had some more to them, but all had approaches to take to make them no threat. Move slow with clickers, keep your distance with runners or stalkers, and then just say the word fire and bloaters are dead.

I think the big issue was that the game forced me to play on Hard and didn't allow me to play on Survivor until I had already beaten the game once. From what I have read, Survival actually offered the experience I wanted. The enemies were much stronger, resources were actually limited, and it seems the AI maybe was even smarter. That sounds prefect for me, but I never felt the urge to play the game again after being disappointed on Hard.

I wish I had the will to play it on Survivor because I bet I would enjoy it so much more based off what I have read. I expected a nitty gritty gameplay experience that made me feel like resources were scarce and that each situation you got into required you to think it through before beginning it. Instead, on Hard I had a general store on my back at all times and could treat the AI like Mafia III's AI and never get into a troubling situation. Like that video showed above, you can just sprint around aggressively with no thoughts to the risks that should be involved there, and you can generally get the drop on all enemies playing that way. That was my experience with the game. While it looks cool from a video perspective, it's boring to know the AI really doesn't pose a threat to you playing that way. And then sneaking around, the AI is dumb as rocks and the only challenge involved there is managing your patience.

Basically, denying the user the ability to play on Survivor the first time around was a big mistake and is probably a big part of why I was disappointed overall. Survivor probably provided the nitty gritty gameplay I expected going in. Instead, I was treated to an experience where I just felt sorry for the enemy AI because I was basically the child of a Far Cry protagonist and John Wick. You were the threat, not the AI. Survivor changes that around and that is what I needed.

Re: The Last of Us Part 2 (PS4)

Hard was plenty of challenge for me. I understand that resource limitation is a critical part of the gameplay experience of TLoU, but I don't particularly dig that aspect of games (I also don't quite understand why a lead pipe ever "wears out" LOL). I did find there was a lack of ammo for most of the game, although by the endgame I had enough.

I guess that was my other issue with the game, is that I spent the entire game saving up supplies, and then at the end of the game I was thinking, "what did I save all of the supplies for?". I literally never used the flamethrower, because I figured ammo would be so limited and I would need it for some horrible moment that never really came. I suppose when it gets right down to it, I don't enjoy resource management - I don't find that fun at all. And that was a significant part of the game.

Honestly, I will wait until a few months after the game comes out to even see what the opinions on it are. Initial impressions are generally a bit misleading I think, and especially with all the heat around the game, it will be hard to tease out the real gameplay issues from the 'other' issues. Althouhg having said that, the primary focus of the game is story-telling, so it's hard to de-couple that from the gameplay.

I see, you like games that give you plenty things to do.

I loved the Witcher 3, but got burnt out half way through Blood & Wine.

Mafia III I got for dirt cheap sometime last year, but never put much time into it. The missions too often involve driving long distances and gets annoying. Because I treat every game like a sim, I don't do things like run red lights and that makes it even worse lol.

I've had RDR2 since it's release, but got turned off by the clunky controls and annoying systems like wanted and camps. I'm starting to appreciate the game more now though..

I want to finish those 2 before the next 2 big releases.

I do typically like games that give you plenty to do. Mad Max is another game I should have included. It's so underrated in my opinion. Such a blast to play. But I do like linear games too, but those typically don't have as much to do relative to an open world game, so I think they need something in the gameplay to make it worth staying around. Metro does a good job of making resources scarce. It also makes the monsters a true threat that you cannot just take on a group at once. Even the 1v1 battles with the monsters are dangerous and you need to be methodical constantly

Tomb Raider obviously excels through creating puzzles that challenge you mentally. Half Life is another linear series I enjoyed because it was great at mentally challenging you as well. Max Payne is another linear series I really enjoyed. It doesn't have as much puzzle solving, but it has elite gunplay that makes you feel like a bad***, but isn't too easy. The AI is a challenge and you still have to play smart.

TLOU.... it didn't have great puzzles, it didn't have a particular part of its gameplay that was top notch like Max Payne's shooting. It just had very basic gameplay. I personally needed the AI to be tougher and the resources to be more scarce. I really do think if the devs weren't silly and let you play it on Survivor immediately that I would have a different tune about this game. I probably would have been challenged enough to not feel like the game was a chore to play half the time. That's all it really boils down to. The basic gameplay is only amplified because I was forced to play on a lower difficulty than I would have liked. I'm the type that needs to be challenged mentally or I get very bored. I need to be challenged or to have the ability to be creative and let my mind have fun. TLOU just didn't allow that to happen on Hard and that's where I think my dissatisfaction stems from.

Freaking love Mad Max. Brutal visceral melee combat, gorgeous visuals, great audio and best car combat since Twisted Metal 2.

This is one of those games where I don't want to know too much going in. I've been purposely avoiding videos and articles because I want my first playthrough to be as fresh as it possibly can be.

I loved the first game and I'm sure this will be no different. Naughty Dog has shown me enough over the years for them to get my money on day one.
