Re: The Last of Us Part 2 (PS4)

I appreciate the explanation, and I guess I can see the outcry from a certain point of view, overinflated and enflamed by the Twitter and Reddit mobs per usual. Doesn't bother me, and I look forward to another top notch game from Naughty Dog. I think saying the majority of any community feels one way or another is a bit of a stretch, however.

Re: The Last of Us Part 2 (PS4)

To be honest, I don't really care about any of the leak stuff or any of that, but I hope that the new game is a little bit more fun - from a gameplay perspective - than the first game. Having just completed "The Last of Us", the story is interesting and I wanted to see where it was all headed, but the core gameplay loop is pretty bland, IMO. It's like Uncharted without the crazy over-the-top set pieces, climbing, and puzzle-solving. Which leaves...shooting and cutscenes. The shooting is really pretty mediocre truth be told (like all Naughty Dog games, really), and the stealth I found to be pretty tedious, bland, and not very rewarding. The whole game felt like a slog to get from one cutscene to the next, and I can't honestly say it was the most fun I've ever had. Hitting "triangle" everywhere you walk for 19 hours in the hopes of getting enough tape so you can make a shiv to open a door got pretty old pretty fast.

Personally, I'd have been fine without them ever making a sequel to the game. It didn't seem like it needed one and I'm not really clamoring for more after finishing the game.

Do NOT read unless you want a little more in depth spoilers.

          Spoiler

I do believe that critics will love the game which isn't surprising (95+ is my prediction for MC/OC), 20m+ in sales but I see gamers actually being 50/50. I believe that half will love it and half will hate it.

This is probably the worst take on a game I've ever read. It's not fast paced FPS game so what do you expect?

That's funny, because this is the worst take on someone else's opinion on a game I've ever read. Do you have specific issues with my comment on the core gameplay loop?

In answer to your question what do I expect: to have fun playing it?

Re: The Last of Us Part 2 (PS4)

I voiced my opinions in the original game's thread, but I also thought the gameplay was a big time disappointment. The story was pretty good, but the gameplay was so boring. I had no plans of getting this game before the leak. The first game is one of the most overrated games of all time in my opinion. Seeing the leaks confirms I'll likely never play this game. I don't want to get into a political back and forth, I'm just going to say that we shouldn't be getting stuff shoved down our throats in the manner that so many decision makers try. I'd prefer no politics thrown into the game, or go the GTA route and make fun of both sides, but that wouldn't fit a game like this. Just leave the nonsense out of the games.

Oh well, I just wanted to chime in and say pie isn't alone. The gameplay was pretty boring and bland in the first game. It seems everyone just loved the story so much that they overlooked the bad gameplay, but the people like me who didn't find the story to be some amazing thing, the game as a whole was hardly above average at best. Like I said, it's probably my most overrated game of all time.

I actually loved the gameplay and combat in TLOU. It's not the best or anything like that but it depends on how you want to play. I love stealth and being methodical taking my time taking out enemy by enemy and only start shooting if I get detected. I can understand why some don't like it but I do think that it comes down to what you're looking for gameplay and combat wise. For me, it was great but for others not so much.

I do agree 100% in regards to wanting developers to keep politics and whatnot out of their games.

I also enjoy being stealthy and methodical and that's how I played the first game. I also played it on whatever the hardest difficulty was that you could play it on your first time through. What bothered me was the AI was dumb and you didn't even have to be stealthy to remain undetected. And then when it came to supplies, you had enough the entire game to open your own general store up. I don't really recall one time where I ever was hurting for a particular item. You would lack ammo, but you never needed it because of how easy it was to "sneak" up on any enemy.

I still enjoyed the game enough to beat it. I would have quit if it was too bad, but the story wasn't as strong for me as it was others and I've already expressed how meh I thought the gameplay was at its best. The AI was hardly better than that of Mafia III. The only part of the game where I actually struggled and had to take a few tries is when you and Ellie were stuck inside of some metal building that was getting overran with zombies. It was a tiny little shack and you were just so outnumbered that it became difficult. Other than that, the rest of the game was just boring to me because of what I've already hit on.

I'm not trying to knock anyone who enjoyed the game. Some of my buddies call it one of the best games of all time. They loved the story and thought the gameplay was good enough to not bring that story down. To me, the story just didn't bring me in. It was a pretty standard story that was pretty easy to predict what would happen next. I never felt a connection with either Joel or Ellie. Combine that with the boring gameplay and you'll see why I personally don't care for the game, think it is so overrated, and wouldn't put it in my top 10 games of that generation, let alone ever.

Re: The Last of Us Part 2 (PS4)

I think the other thing is that compared to a game like Metal Gear Solid V, the stealth in "The Last of Us" really feels pretty lacking in comparison.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the game sucked or anything, it was a perfectly good and well-made game, and I played all the way through it. But I wouldn't say I was thrilled at the finish and definitely did not feel like I really wanted to see another game in the series.

That having been said, I'll be curious to see what the reactions are to the TLoU2. Ignoring all the other noise around the game, I'll be interested to see if it's actually more fun to play in terms of the core gameplay loop than the first one. But for me it's a definite wait-and-see (maybe even for years, until it's like $20 as part of the best-seller collection or whatever they call it).

That's not my gameplay but you see it doesn't look "boring" at all. To be fair that guy probably put a lot of time into the game.

That video is boring to me, though. The gun play is nothing special. The AI is unaware and can be easily gamed just by running around them like he did half of the video. The game was supposed to be suspenseful, but it hardly had any moments that had any suspense or intensity to them, and that video shows that off. Nowhere in that video do you see AI that impressed you. The aggression does not come off as risky because it isn't in the game.

The game had decent story and it was told in a good way. The gameplay was not what made the game and doesn't really standout anywhere in particular. That is why I personally found the gameplay. It's gun mechanics were not that good honestly, the AI was incredible basic and lacked awareness, the amount of supplies you had all game made it never feel like an apocalyptic setting, it was a very linear setting that didn't really challenge the player with any complex puzzle-solving type of levels. You basically are going through linear levels with all around average gameplay that doesn't try to specialize in any area, and are just waiting until the next cut scene because that is the game's strength.

If you actually found the gameplay engaging and fun, that's awesome. I personally didn't. I love a good story in a game and I have finished games that had poor gameplay just because of the stories, but I still prefer a game to at least have some redeeming qualities in the gameplay. The most fun part of the gameplay for me in this game was simply the gore. Nothing really stood out gameplay wise which means they didn't really try to reinvent anything and nothing was broken, but it also means that the gameplay was pretty forgettable overall and the story did the narrative did the heavy lifting.

I played on hard difficulty back then and turned off that vision mode or whatever it's called. I thought the AI was solid. Enemies would rush me sometimes or flank me. If the enemy AI has to do with Ellie, she was literally invisible as Naughty Dog wasn't able to pull off both characters being detected by enemies.

Never really had an issue with ammo but did need some supplies at times and either missed them or would get supplies I didn't need.

I know you're not knocking anyone who likes the game. You just didn't like it. I have had my share of games that majority loved but I didn't. Not everyone is going to like every game.
