Re: Star Wars Battlefront 2 (PS4, Xbox One & PC)

I did enjoy the beta gameplay and want to like this game, but due to the nature of the loot boxes and overall MP landscape, I'm staying far away from it. I don't like the idea of dividing the player base with a premium / DLC maps model, but this system is almost infinitely worse, but it's a better money make for EA, so they aren't going to abandon ship now.

How about $60 and everyone gets the same experience?

Any impressions on the single player campaign?

If it is really good....I will wait for the discount bin to just play that aspect.

I agree. If you launch a solid game with robust features then I can actually justify paying for some kind of DLC map/hero pack down the line. The problem is the first Battlefront made you pay for all that DLC while offering a very shallow game up front (no campaign, an average map list, and 6 total hero powerups)

...of course I'm sure selling a $5-10 map/hero pack every few months does not come close to the potential revenue of a persistent loot crate system.

Re: Star Wars Battlefront 2 (PS4, Xbox One & PC)

All this lootbox stuff aside I'm still very much looking forward to the full game. I played the beta extensively and really enjoyed the game play side of things. The game visually was phenomenal at max settings on my PC. I really enjoyed the Naboo map and cannot wait for maps like Endor and Hoth.

Do I agree with the practices being employed by EA/ DICE and other game developers in general? No not at all. Micro transactions are here to stay unfortunately especially with the amounts of money that can be made off them. Do they personally detract from my enjoyment of a video game with them? No I can still enjoy the game without buying them with real money. The only thing that somewhat irks me is the fact that heroes such as Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker who were available in the first Battlefront are now locked behind what's essentially a paywall. But again it doesn't bother me personally to the point of me not wanting to play the game.

Reason being is I don't see myself playing Battlefront 2 as a "hardcore" game so to speak. What I mean is a game that I won't put hours upon hours into each week. I see BF2 as a game I play casually just to have fun. I have other games like CS:GO and such that I consider my hard core type games where I actually focus on trying and winning.

I do find EA's reddit response pretty laughable trying to justify their lootbox system. Oh well I'm still looking forward to playing the game either way.

I'm genuinely surprised that people are so turned off by microtransactions and pay-to-win. I think they represent one of the greatest innovations in gaming - the idea that people who are willing to spend lots of extra cash are actually subsidizing the cost of the game for the rest of us.

AAA games have stayed at the $60 retail price for as long as I can remember. The cost of going to the movies has gone up, my cable bill has skyrocketed, even Netflix subscriptions have gone up in price. Not games though. And we have the whales to thank. They are the ones dropping hundreds on the extra items, Deluxe Editions, etc. just so they can acquire earlier something that is attainable through hard work. It is the perfect capitalist system where the ones who can afford it and desire it the most are covering the costs.

When I kill some noob who is playing with Darth Vader and maxed out star cards on the second day, I won't teabag him. But I will kneel to him out of respect and gratitude that I didn't have to drop $80 on the standard edition.

They may have stayed the same $60 price tag in the US but here in Canada we pay $80 per AAA game. With tax included its about $89. So for us it's a bit of a bigger deal. Throw in a season pass and now you're over $110+.

Fair enough but I think that has more to do with the strength of CAD vs the USD in recent years.

Oh I agree 100% that's the main reason. From September to December I used to buy anywhere from 3-9 games. Now that each game with tax is $90 it makes me think twice and only buy games I know I'm actually going to enjoy and put decent time into. Plus now that I'm 25 years old instead of being a teenager you have to deal with everything that comes with being an adult so I can just drop a few hundred dollars on video games like I used to years ago lol.

They aren't subsidizing the game for the rest of us. Ignoring the fact for a moment that there are many examples of games released even in 2017 that do not have ridiculous pay 2 win micro transaction systems, the gaming industry has found/expanded on revenue streams outside of point of purchase sales so that they don't need to charge an additional $10 or $20 just to break even.

Microtransactions are just one of those revenue streams, and while they are here to stay they are not all created equally. For instance, a game I played nearly every day for a year was Overwatch. That game was buy 2 play with cosmetic only transaction system. While it would be preferable to not have a micro-transaction system at all, at least in this case there is not anything that directly affects the competitive gameplay where tea-bagging some noob on a week into the game is exponentially more difficult than it should be because that "noob" spent $80 in loot crates.

It's interesting that there are F2P games with less exploitative micro-transaction systems than full price titles like Battlefront or Destiny.

That's exactly how I have looked at it with all the uproar. Now I don't need to drop the price of a second game on a single game to enjoy DLC, etc. Some other person can spend their own money and I can still enjoy everything everyone else can.

Sure it may take me longer to unlock this or that...but really, is that thing they might unlock before you really going to ruin your enjoyment or kill the balance? I don't think it will to the degree people say it is.

Man, what an absolute joke. Caught this on Reddit. Gamestop dropped $100 on loot crates to see the results, and they received less than half of the required credits to unlock Luke or Vader. Not that I was remotely advocating for microtransactions in the first place, but the fact that you have to drop hundreds of dollars to unlock one character is utterly hilarious. The push for consumers to purchase microtransactions is so blatantly obvious that they might as well smack you with a hammer over the head.

As much as I LOVE Star Wars and was looking forward to playing this with my son, I can't in good conscience buy this game. And I know it won't happen, but I hope the game absolutely bombs relative to the expected sales. This is the saddest cash grab I've ever seen, and I can't imagine how anyone would be ok with this sort of practice in the slightest.

Question - Is it required of you to do a micro transaction in this game?

If no, why do you care that much to literally boycott a game? If you're not going to spend money on the micro transactions, that exist in nearly every game now, how does that really effect you?

I'm not trying to argue with you, just playing devils advocate here. You say you love Star Wars and want to play with your son....so really, what's stopping you? Just to stick it to EA whos taking part in micro transactions like everyone else is?

Agreed. EA should have made this a F2P game with these types of practices and microtransactions.

Great point about the DLC too. Instead of splitting the community they are going to release future DLC for free. I'll bet there are ppl out there who will drop in excess of a thousand bucks on this game. These whales make it possible for them to go with free DLC down the road.

Pay-to-win is not exactly pay to win...it's pay to have a better chance at winning. I'm terrible at shooters so give me a star character and maxed out abilities and I'll still get smoked more often than not. Skills still pay the bills.
