Re: Ghost of Tsushima (PS4 Exclusive)

Have played 20 or so hours on hard difficulty. Overall, the game is great with my biggest negative being the camera. When walking/running, it's good. When in combat, it's bad. It's never where you want it to be and when you factor in that there's no lock on system, that makes it even worse because the lock on system would help immensely with the bad camera. And when crouching, the camera zooms in instead of out which makes no sense to me because I crouch when wanting to do stealth and it kind of defeats the purpose when you can't see a wider field of view due to the camera being zoomed in.

The wind, bird, fox setup is unique but 20 hours in, I wish you could just get everything to appear on the map and just waypoint it. There's also some Ubisoft type stuff in the game. The climbing is fine but so outdated. After playing AC Origins/Odyssey, I simply want to be able to climb everything anywhere. Not being able to do so after those two games is so damn annoying.

Combat in general is great but I end up fighting the camera more than the enemies. The standoffs are awesome though. Have only messed up one thus far when it comes to the timing.

All the upgrading/skills, etc. is good. The story and characters have been real good thus far. I'm really enjoying it and I like the setup of the character side quests where they're stories instead of one and done.

Audio is all great or better thus far. No problems here and visuals are a 10/10. Enough said. LOL. Overall, really liking and enjoying the game with the combat camera and no lock on preventing me from loving it.

Agree with the combat camera issues. I would like to SuckerPunch patch the camera a bit.

Yeah the camera is my only negative so far with this game. I find myself dodging a lot, not because of attacks, but to reset my camera.

Re: Ghost of Tsushima (PS4 Exclusive)

For those that have issue with the camera, there was a reason why Sucker Punch did it the way they did it.

"If we had a lock-on you wouldn't have been able to move as quickly between the different opponents as they came in at you."
Here's The Reason Ghost Of Tsushima Doesn't Have Lock-On For Combat
Ghost of Tsushima has no lock-on mechanic, encouraging players to remain in the middle of a fight as opposed to keeping all enemies in front of them, so as to keep an eye on all possible threats. In an interview with Ghost of Tsushima narrative director Nate Fox, I asked him why Sucker Punch chose to not include a lock-on mechanic.

"Well working on the combat, we watched samurai films, which are of course an inspiration for the feeling of this game," Fox answered. "And the fighters in those movies will often have to switch their attention very fluidly from one incoming foe to another. So the combat is built around dealing with a variety of enemies, a group of them."
Though you will face other foes, you will primarily fight against Mongols in Ghost of Tsushima. "We tried to give [the Mongols] a feeling of being like a wolf pack that would surround you," Fox said. "And only through skill, could you fend them off as they came at you from all sides. If we had a lock-on you wouldn't have been able to move as quickly between the different opponents as they came in at you."

Fox likens Ghost of Tsushima's combat to a dance where you weave "between [Mongol] swords as they move through space." Had Ghost of Tsushima incorporated a lock-on mechanic, Fox deposits it would have been more difficult for players to improvise and respond to numerous, simultaneous threats. As is, Ghost of Tsushima's combat asks you to attack, block, parry, and dodge--the lack of a lock-on mechanic means you don't have to consider it when enemies are surrounding you.

In GameSpot's Ghost of Tsushima review, Edmond Tran writes, "The game hits a lot of fantastic cinematic highs, and those ultimately lift it above the trappings of its familiar open-world quest design and all the innate weaknesses that come with it--but those imperfections and dull edges are definitely still there. Ghost of Tsushima is at its best when you're riding your horse and taking in the beautiful world on your own terms, armed with a sword and a screenshot button, allowing the environmental cues and your own curiosity to guide you. It's not quite a Criterion classic, but a lot of the time it sure looks like one."
People are for reviews if it backs their argument, and against them when they don't.
“I believe the game is designed to reward the ones who hit the hardest – If you can’t take it, you shouldn’t play!” Jack Lambert
“Quarterbacks should wear dresses.” Jack Lambert

Loving the story, so far. Really strong effort from Sucker Punch. I agree with everyone on the camera angles hurting combat. I’d like to be able to lock on a target, as well. I find myself using Kage (the black horse) about as much as I used Roach in The Witcher. Only for longer trips. I usually prefer to walk or run. Played around 6 hours straight, yesterday, so I’m definitely enjoying it.

              Makes sense.

A lot of my annoyances with this game aren’t really issues with the game.

Their mostly just old Assassin’s Creed muscle memory that I have to break.

Does this game use the mic in the controller more than any other game out there?

That swipe up on the touchpad to activate the wind which triggers the controller is very cool.

That all makes sense regarding the camera but that doesn't change the fact that the camera is still bad when in combat. The camera doesn't rotate on it's own so im constantly stuck with the camera on the side as if im playing a 2D game. The camera should always be behind my character and zoomed out so I can see my surroundings. The lock on would fix the camera because it would then keep the camera behind you as you're looking and moving around your target.

When you then add in the fact that the face buttons are your main buttons and you have to take your thumb off of them to rotate the camera, it basically leaves you vulnerable during that time. And enemies seem to have a far greater reach with their swords than you do. Also, the dodge and roll buttons should have been X and O respectively. So many times, I want to do a dodge so I can attack the enemy and instead, my character rolls which takes me out of the range for a melee attack.

To be perfectly honest, if it wasn't for those dagger knives that you throw at enemies to stun them, I would be getting slaughtered a lot more than I was.

If anyone here digging this game wants to see some great cinematic killsword action, be sure to check out the Rurouni Kenshin trilogy. I think they're coming out with two more films yet (a prequel and then a sequel to the trilogy).

100% agree. The camera is stupid. It’s the worst AI for a camera I have played in years and the lack of lock on has nothing to do with it. Zoom it out more! And there are times when it rotates to an obstructed view. Simply switching to a more overhead view would help. I think the game gets cute by trying to rotate to various angles like a Samurai film but just ends up being annoying.

It’s not a game killer by any stretch. Having a lot of fun. But I’m constantly fighting with the camera while I’m also trying to fight a bunch of bad guys. And as you get more weapons and skills I don’t want my right thumb to worry about the camera.

Agreed. And if you're in a small confined area, holy crap, it gets even worse. I will literally roll/run out of camps to get into bigger open areas so the camera won't be as bad.

Plus, I just remembered something. Jin like Geralt in TW3 has a locked stance during combat. It's very annoying trying to have Jin put his sword down and run at times. I know you can put away your sword but doing that when surrounded by enemies isn't the smartest idea. lol.

Really solid movies. One of the best live action takes I've seen. (along with Azumi) The fights will remind you of Jin

How are the English voices for anyone who's using them? Given the setting subs with JP voices was the only option I was gonna use, but I'm still curious.

And, did anyone go one step further than I did and use the Kurosawa display mode?

I started with Japanese voices with English sub-titles but switch to English voices because I found myself reading the screen and missing the action on the screen.

                              This game is beautiful

Yeah I think I'm going to switch to English for that reason.

It gets distracting when you're following someone and you have to look at the action and the words.
